The Arms Hotel Lobby, Thursday [12/10]

Once upon a time, one of Mary's former employees had arranged a display of of knives on the wall behind the front desk as a gift. It had been a little creepy, but Mary wasn't one to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Still, it was rather disconcerting to get to the front desk this morning and find that the wall of knives was now a wall of candy canes.

Those candy canes in a bowl at the front desk? They didn't come off the wall, really.

It was a worried goddess of love that appeared in the lobby. Aphrodite had a notepad and a pen and was looking frantic.

"Mary!" She almost collided with the front desk, putting her hands up to the wood at the last moment. "Tell me the ice sculpture arrived? It's okay? It didn't melt? It did, didn't it? I knew I couldn't trust that delivery company!"

"It arrived just fine, and I made sure Gunther put it in the walk-in freezer right away to keep it from melting," Mary reassured her. "We even have a back-up system in case the freezer loses power."

It was 'Dite who suddenly seemed to melt as she leaned against the counter. "Oh, thank Zeus. I was so worried." Looking down, she found the words on her list and crossed off 'ice sculpture'.

"What about the tree? Is it here yet? Remember, just lights, no other decorations."

"Oh, that was such a tough one!" said Mary. "I really could not wait to decorate it, and I kept finding Christmas ornaments that would look so nice on that tree. But I held back and limited myself to just lights on the tree."

"So, it's up and here? And the other decorations? The tapestries and such?" She clasped her hands together. "Would you mind if I took a look? Just for a moment? I don't want to interrupt . . . but I already checked on the band, the flowers, the French champagne, which should be arriving tomorrow, and the ice sculpture. If I know the room is shaping up I'll feel so much better!"

"I would be happy to show you around," said Mary, beaming. "It looks so amazing that it's been difficult to keep it all to myself. Let's go take a look (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomtownies/4657894.html?thread=189849318#t189849318)."

For some specific visitors who know who they are.

"So, here is the gorgeous tree I was telling you about," said Mary, leading 'Dite into the ballroom. "I thought putting it right here by the entrance would be best, but if you see a better spot for it, just let me know and I'll have Gunther move it."

"Oh, that's beautiful!" The tree was huge, nearly twelve feet tall, and the crystal lights sparkled even in the brightly lit room. "I think it's fine right where it is." Impulsively, she went to hug Mary. "This is going to be so much fun!"

Mary was only happy to hug 'Dite back. "I am so excited about the holidays this year," she said. "This party is going to be so much fun. I can't wait for Sunday!"

"I think so, too. Music, dancing, romance -- and we're in a hotel, how lucky is that?" She winked and smiled at Mary. Then her expression turned worried. "Oh, I just hope people show up! I had this awful dream that it was you and me and five other people. It was so sad!"

"I wouldn't be worried. I'm sure people will turn up just to see you," said Mary, smiling.

Was she flirting? Maaaaaybe.

'Dite's eyes widened just a tad. Was Mary flirting? Oh, she hoped so.

"They'd be just as likely to turn up to see you." She winked. "Just so they can get you under the mistletoe."

"Oooh, mistletoe! I need to remember to put some up around the ballroom before the party," said Mary, smiling. "Don't want to miss out on any kisses, right?"

"Oh, don't worry about that." Yes, definitely a smirk on 'Dite's face at that. "I have the mistletoe all covered. It will be pleasantly floating around the room. With no strings, so it can't be taken down." She tilted her head. "Can't wait to see who it hovers over. Hm?"

"Then I'd better cross my fingers and hope the mistletoe is good to me," said Mary, giggling.

After ascertaining during class that yes, half the school was still insane, Emma set out to find Aphrodite. Whatever was wrong with Karla had started at her store, therefore it was her problem to fix.

Her powers had lead her to the hotel, and thankfully her target seemed to be alone at the moment. "I don't know what you're feeding those little gremlin-devils at your store, darling, but it has to stop," she said as she breezed into the ballroom. "This is starting to get absurd."

'Dite looked surprised. 'Dite was surprised. "Ex-squeeze me? Who are y--" Recognition set in. "Emma! How are youuuu? And what precisely are you talking about?"

The phone in her back jeans pocket began to ring. She ignored it for the moment.

"Gremlins. Small, green, unholy fondness for human flesh," Emma replied dryly. "One bit Karla at your store on Wednesday, and she's still being affected by its venom."

"Plus half the school went certifiably insane sometime after she did, if radio is to be believed, and if I have to overhear one more person mentally musing about their new true love, I may hurl."

"Gremlins, wha-- No. First, there are no gremlins at my store. Second, just --" The phone went off again, and this time it seemed much more persistent, even a bit angry. Rolling her eyes, Aphrodite yanked it from her back pocket. "Just because half the school is in love doesn't mean--" It was Bliss. She raised an eyebrow, but didn't answer. "-- they're insane. Love isn't a bad thing, Emma."

A memory crossed her mind, Karla dressed as Puck, spouting a goodbye in rhyme. She pursed her lips and narrowed her eyes. "But tell me more about what's going on."

"She's got a bite, on her wrist, that she says came from one of the menaces while she was at your store," Emma answered. "Think whatever you want about the gremlins, but that's when she started mooning after people, and she's not the only one."

"Jack is gaga for Priestly -- and while it's hilarious I can guarantee it's not normal -- and half the people at the theater last night just felt wrong by the time the show was over. Defend 'love' all you like - " and the sneer on the word was audible, " - but they're still crazy."

Uh. Huh. 'Dite raised an eyebrow, but just listened to Emma. As she finished speaking, the phone rang a third time, still with the same ringtone, but projecting a plea for someone to pick up.

Aphrodite held up a finger. "One minute." She turned around and answered the phone.

"What, Bliss?" Pause. "Oh, really. Yeah, that explains a lot." Her body went rigid. "No. In her right mind, Karla would never do that. She thinks love potions are wrong and she'd never do this on purpose." Another pause. "I said 'in her right mind', didn't I?" She shook her head. "No. I'll handle this. See you Sunday."

She hung up and turned back around. "Right. Let's go see this play of yours. I'll fix everything tonight."

Emma rolled her eyes. "So now I might be right," she sighed. "What has my darling witchling done this time?"

"Only stolen a vial of a very powerful love potion." Aphrodite sighed. "She's going to be really upset about it when she figures it out, so don't yell at her. Much."

"Yell? I'm not going to yell; it's not like she fed it to me," Emma replied with amusement. "Scold her on her choice of targets and the execution of her little scheme, but I don't typically yell."

Well, not at Karla, anyway. Only at people that were stupid or deserved it.

Because you would rather look at Gunther's cleavage instead of Mary's.

Except for a trip to Trader Joe's, I will be around all day.

You people have no self-control. I'm headed to TJ's later myself and I will walk in and get two items and walk out. No problem.

Wait, you're going to TJ's by yourself? Isn't that possibly just as dangerous as letting me go by myself?

Except, it's Holiday time, and they have Pfeffernusse... and chocolate oranges with dark chocolate... and .... I may be in trouble.
