JGOB [Sunday morning]

There was way too much snow on the ground for Max to feel too excited about the day. It wasn't as bad as where he'd grown up, though, so he'd deal with it. And, besides, a massive stack of pastries made up for a lot of aggravation. And since he'd handwavily arranged to meet a student this morning, well...

There was a single neatly frosted cupcake on the table across from him.

Oz's van had become much like a cave after the recent weather, and likely he'd have to clear some of the snow off and from around it, but not yet.

Right now he'd tromped through much snow, and wanted to warm himself up with cinnamon rolls and cocoa.

Holy cow that was a big guy. He waved to Max as he stomped the snow off his boots.

That guy was a bit scrawny. Maybe a student, or... maybe just a scrawny guy. Max waved back. He got along fine with scrawny guys.

Actually Oz was surprisingly wiry under his clothing. Though that was a relatively recent development. "Nice weather we're having."

Max made a face. "If you like freezing in the snow."

"Not so much. Warmer than Alaska though."

"Then I am never going to Alaska."

"Wouldn't recommend it in the winter." Oz agreed. The endless night in some places rather creeped him out. "It's not so bad in the summer though."

"If it's enough colder than here to be worth mentioning, then I don't think I want to visit even in the summer."

Oz shrugged. To each their own. "Stick to tropical climes then?"

"Good mooooorning, Centurion!" Ino carolled as she bounced into the store, shaking snow of the boots she'd donned that morning...

She'd get around to noticing the cupcake, she just had to get rid of the snow first.

Max looked up an arched an eyebrow. "It is too early and too cold for anyone to be that chipper," he groused. Of course he looked rather awake himself, so...

"But it's a wonderful day!" she chirped, shaking her hair out and wandering over to the counter to talk them into giving her a hot chocolate.

Hot chocolate! Because she needed more sugar!

With her drink in hand she bounced over to him and noticed the cupcake. "For me? You shouldn't've."

Cue absolute innocence sliding over her face. Honest.

"I wanted to give you a little reward for all your hard work this semester." Max's expression was alarmingly similar to Ino's.

Yeaaah, she was pretty sure she didn't want to eat that cupcake now.

Or even pick it up.

"You totally didn't have to," she said, laughing, taking a seat and looking angelic. "I mean, Anemone did half the work!"

"Oh, don't worry, I have plans to reward her as well." He watched Ino expectantly.

It was bad and wrong of her, right, that that made her feel a bit better? At least she wasn't getting saddled with all the blame?

Even if he was trying to pass it off as a reward. He was a Bad Man.

She gave herself a bit more time by undoing her coat and draping it over the back of her chair. "And maybe you didn't want me to feel left out while you have your pile of pastry?" she asked lightly, slooowly tugging the cupcake over to her.

If it exploded, she was ducking under the table.

"Sure," he deadpanned. "That's it exactly."

The cupcake... did what cupcakes do. It sat there.

Price came into JGOB, and eyed the cupcake across from Max.

"Setting a trap for someone?" he half-joked. He didn't know the man.

"If I were then this would be the perfect bait," Max laughed.

"Depends on what you were trying to trap," Price said. Max's joke wasn't exactly assuring Price that the other man had good intentions.

"Most of my students seem rather partial to sugary pastries," Max chuckled.

He cocked his head. "I don't believe we've met."

"We hadn't," Price said. "Not before. Captain Price, at your service. I take it you teach at the school?"

"Max," he responded. "And, yes. I just finished a course on infantry tactics." That 'Captain' part had him paying a bit more attention than usual.

"Interesting choice for a high school," Price said. "Historical basis? Napoleon and Alexander and Robert E. Lee?"

"Practical, actually." Max snorted. "I'm not much of an academic sort."
