Covent Garden Flowers, Wednesday, 1/13

Two notes today, instead of one new one; Dinah blinked, and had to snicker before writing, Orchids ruuuuule. But I think we have a united front of carnation terrorists. They're everywhere. They're every size. They're colors not found in nature! Tell me they don't have an agenda.

Priestly miraculously managed to brave the cold to come into town and visit.

What a good friend he was!

"Never fear! The Sous has arrived!"

"Woooo! Sous!" Which probably sounded like a Sioux-battle-cry, Dinah realized. Yay for more confusion! "We're saaaaved!"

"You are!" Priestly threw his arms wide and grinned. "So how's the florist biz today?"

"The carnations are planning something. I can smell it." She pointed to the notes on the bulletin board. "See? The others think so too!"

"Wow, your bulletin board is way more interesting than at the diner." Well, sort of. It followed more of a logical progression, anyway. "Do they have co-conspirators?"

"The Spider-mums. I don't think the orchids are in on it." Dinah smiled and picked up a watering can. "They're too cool. And the roses are just all smug and superior. The carnations want to displace them, I'm positive." Right now she was on an anti-rose kick, anticipating Valentine's Day.

"When will the flower world learn that there's room for both?"

"All the colors and species in the bouquet!" Dinah grinned, and leaned on the counter. "So how's you week going otherwise?"

Priestly shrugged. "Pretty good. Nothing real exciting going on. Just the weirdness of the phones this weekend."

"Ohhh, yes. You didn't get any from me, right? 'Cause you weren't supposed to." Dinah grinned. "I didn't get any from you, but there's a couple people I have to tease yet."

". . . Wait, you didn't get my message?"

But she'd shown up, all winged out.

Huh.

"Nooo. You left one for me?" Dinah blinked, and picked up an orchid to snip off dead leaves. "I didn't get it. What'd it say?"

"Basically to meet me in the common room for our little fashion experiment. Which . . . well, you did, anyway." Priestly was suddenly wondering who did get that message. "Huh."

"I just remembered we were going to do that, and if you hadn't been there, I was going to go looking for you," Dinah said, wondering. "I left one message about that Roy got that we're pretending never happened. And one from Ino about flying cars that was for Tyler. Still better than last year, that time was really confusing."

"I got a fair number of propositions, just as many people calling me a creep, and one guy philosophizing about what God thinks of gay girls."

"...do I want to know?" Dinah asked, half-afraid, half-fascinated.

"Nah, if I tell you what he actually said, it won't be as interesting."

Dinah snickered. "Whereas now, I can imagine the Perfect Statement about lesbian love. Whatever that is."

"Exactly!" Priestly grinned. "So. Any new . . . Alfredy news?"

Dinah grinned back, and instinctively lowered her voice. "Momoko and I are laying groundwork. Yup. Make it a regular thing, maybe once a week." She perched her chin on her hand. "You willing to be my first call if we get caught?"

"Of course. But, uh, I'm gonna need help stocking up any bail money."

"I could hand over my emergency ATM card before I go off and do this stuff?" Dinah offered, snipping a dead leaf, then smoothing out a new shoot. "And check in when I get back. That's how we usually do it in New Gotham. Well, without getting arrested and stuff."

"That'll probably be better for my blood pressure." You're seventeen, Priestly. You don't have blood pressure concerns. "Maybe start up an alternate emergency fund, just in case you end up in a situation when you weren't planning? And then your sisters don't go 'wait, why is there this huge withdrawal?'"

"Probably a good plan. I mean, if something like that happens, I'll want to keep it from them as long as possible." Until charges were dropped! Or she disappeared. Although that would be irresponsible. So yeah, 'til charges were dropped. "We just did a patrol last night. We're not going to get in the way of the police. Just save people who need it."

"Hopefully not from the police." What? Priestly had anarchist leanings. They tended to end up on the wrong side of unjustifiably angry police on occasion.

Dinah gave him an eyeroll, then said, "If we see police brutality, we'll take photos and wade in. But yeah. Momoko fights monsters in Tokyo, and I fight metas and mobsters... it'd be overkill to do stuff the cops in Baltimore can do just as well."

"So no drug dealers or run of the mill murderers for you, right?"

"The problem with drug dealers is you never know who they're connected to, if you don't know the city," Dinah said, grimacing, then stroking the petals of the pink orchid. "Or who an undercover cop might be in the middle of the group. Too much chance for creating a bigger mess. Same with murders that've already happened. We don't have access to the coroner's reports, the way we manage in New Gotham."

Priestly nodded, reassured that Dinah wasn't just, like, jumping into this. "Right. Without police connections, you'd probably just get yourself into bigger trouble."

"Yeah. So, crimes in progress. Minimal damage to the suspects. And mostly, just making sure the victims are out of danger." Dinah smiled, feeling more centered than she had in a long time. "I missed this. This is what I'm for, you know?"

Priestly nodded. "Yeah. Like when I get to work an actual grill instead of just shout orders at the cook at Luke's."

"Exactly." Dinah grinned, and picked up a fallen blossom to give to him, twirling it between her fingers. "All the daredevil stuff I do, I love it. But it doesn't make me as happy as getting to make a difference like this." She shook her head. "Maybe this weekend we'll go out again. No point if the weather sucks." She grinned. "Burglars stay in if it's too cold out."

"That's surprisingly sensible of them." One would think there'd be no crime in winter at all.

Well, if one were a total weenie when it came to cold weather, anyway.
