Atlas Gym - Tuesday

Rose had had a hard workout in the morning so by the time the gym actually opened, she was pretty much just hanging out in the office and reading one of the books she'd gotten on bodyguarding tactics.

Jessi had called in because she'd 'hurt her shoulder shoveling.' It was obviously a complete lie since Jessi hadn't ever shoveled a day in her life, but Rose was too happy to have a day without the stupid pink spandex and didn't even give her a hard time on the phone.

Worf entered the gym and made a show of inspecting the workout equipment and the sparring area before finally nodding at his friend.

"Rose," he said in greeting. "I trust you are well?"

"Well and unfrozen," she said, way too amused at his whole inspection thing. "What about you?"

"Last weekend's weather was... inconvenient," Worf replied as he inspected one of the weight machines. "But my health and exercise program were not affected. How has your training been?"

"Intense," she said quickly. "Trials and graduation and real life are coming up quickly."

"Have you been assigned a charge?" Worf asked frowning a little at the mention of graduation. "Or does that not happen until later?"

"Not officially, but as long as I pass my trials and get good evaluations, I'll be assigned to Lissa with Dimitri," Rose explained, leaning on the counter.

Worf raised an eyebrow at that. "Your trainer will also be your partner?" he asked.

"That's the idea," she agreed. "You're all surprised."

Worf shrugged. "I was under the impression that he was an instructor. Not a field operative. No matter. I'm sure you will do well in your trials and be successful in your role as a protector."

"Hell, no," Rose said quickly. "He's amazing. One of the best guardians out there especially since he's so young. It's a huge honor he agreed to teach me."

Not that there was hero worship there or anything.

"It must have taken some doing to have him come teach you here," Worf noted. "I'm sure both of you are looking forward to going back to active duty."

She made a face at him. "Yeah, mostly. I'll miss here though."

Worf snorted at that. "An island that tortures us by strange manners? I will not miss it in the least."

He paused before adding: "Some of the people here are another matter."

"Yeah, but sometimes it gives us chocolate," she pointed out. "And hilarity." Like when her friends turned into girls.

She smiled at the addition though. "That part's gonna suck. Guess we better make sure we get to come back for Homecoming and stuff at least."

"Hmph. I can do without the hilarity," Worf replied. "And we shall see about homecoming. As of now I am unsure of my plans for the future."

"Me too," ROse said with a shrug. "I mean, I'm wherever Lissa is going to be. I dunno if that'll be allowing Homeoming. I hope so."

"Hopefully we'll be able to remain in contact," Worf replied. "Our conversations have been... illuminating."

"Is that what you call it?" she teased. "You're gonna have email or something, right?"

"Or something," Worf replied. "I am unsure whether or not I'll be able to return upon graduation at this point."

She eyed him, a little scowly at that. "We better hang out a lot for the next three months then. At the least."

Worf almost smiled at that. Almost.

"Then I shall visit more often at your work establishment," he said putting his hands behind his back. "And perhaps spar. I would like to see how you're progressing in hand to hand combat."

"You mean you're wondering if I can kick your ass yet?" she asked teasingly. "This needs to happen. Or I can wander over to Wellspring when you're there." Cause that meant Dimitri wouldn't wander over and decide to critique their spar.

Worf smirked at that. "You think you can beat me?" he postured. "You are more than welcome to join me on Monday at Wellspring to find out."

"Pretty sure I can find a way around your awesome powers," she smirked back. "I'll come by to prove it."

"You look hard at work," Edmund said after tracking Rose down. He'd opted for casual clothes today, a bit more rumpled than he normally wore.

"Studying," Rose admitted, giving Edmund a little smile. "Haven't seen you around here before."

"I knew the gym was here, but I thought it was time I had a look inside." Plus he knew from radio that she worked here, but he didn't feel the need to mention that. "Anything interesting?" he asked. "That you're studying, I mean."

"All part of knowing your surroundings?" she teased lightly. "I'm all touched you did it on the day I work. You could have ended up with the freaky dude who works on Saturdays." She looked down at her book. "Personal protection tactics mainly. So totally interesting." Rose even actually meant that.

"I'll be sure to stay away on Saturdays. Is the studying for a class or for home?"

"Home," Rose said. "Trials and graduation and all that's soon, and I'm - still pretty behind on this book stuff."

"I didn't realise it was coming up so quickly," Edmund remarked. "You don't strike me as the book-intensive type."

"I'm not," she said instantly. "But Dimitri and I focus on fighting more than tactics and the book stuff I have to know. So yeah." She made a face. "Stupid books."

Edmund looked thoughtful for a moment. "Have you considered turning your studying sessions into something more practical? If it's tactics and protection especially, there are ways of learning the material without memorising the books."

"Ways like what?" she asked, eyeing him curiously. "We do drills and stuff, but I still gotta know the names and all that."

"Incorporate the theory into the drills. If you need to know tactics, practice them and identify them out loud as what they are, what they do and what you need to do. You'll associate the theory with the practice better than reading them over and over. If it's a person you need to know, put into practice what you know about their techniques. If a live action practice isn't possible, use models. As long as it's something tangible you can touch it should work, but you'll probably need someone else who either knows the material or can learn it along with you and help prepare the lessons. It works for protocol and etiquette as well if you ever need to learn that." Hopefully she never would.

Rose made a face. "I'm done with etiquette lessons." Except for the need to spend most of the rest of her life at the Court. She thought about the rest of it though, poking through how she could maybe make that work. "You think that'd really work? Just - talking about them while working with 'em? It sounds better than reading."

"It worked for me," Edmund said, giving a slight shrug. "I think it might work for you, given what I've seen of how you learn in our sessions. Your body memorises things quickly."

She snickered at the probably unintentional dirty. "It's a talent," she said, totally innocently. "Wanna help me work it out?"

Not dirty.

Edmund nodded, a little surprised at being asked, but pleasantly so. "If you've not had enough of me already with the swordwork." It was probably a good thing that he added the 'with the swordwork' or Rose's filthy mind might have gone down into to new depths of the gutter.

"Not yet," she teased lightly. "Besides, it's good for you to have something to do."

Not that he was obviously bored or anything. "Are you going to run the Fencing club again?"

"I'm considering it. Perhaps as a duelling club instead to entice some of the more experienced people to join. Or those who use other weapons to duel."
