Rocky Bits, Tuesday Afternoon

"Good afternoon," Arthur began, scraping his throat aloud, "And welcome to this meeting of the military reserves. Glad you could join us here down at the Rocky Bits. Today, we will abandon talk of theory and see about how well you all work out in practice. The Rocky Bits are one of the most troubling of physical challenges on the island, but sometimes there may be a need to hide in them, or cross over them. Today, we will explore the best ways to do so."

"There's plenty to keep an eye open for, here," Zack shared, his hands on his hips and looking as chipper as ever. "Cracks in the stones that you might never see coming, sudden drops, and things like that. If you aren't familiar with the area yet, then be sure to go slow and to pay attention to where your feet are going."

Zack was not one to follow his own advice, in this regard.

"As per usual, you are allowed to form teams of two, even three," Arthur continued, "If simply to make sure that if anyone gets injured, they make it back. Watch your step. Normally, it would be best to go around the rocks, but I think we've all learned that normally doesn't apply in this place."

"There are some nifty drop-offs over that way," Zack shared, leaning forward conspiratorially. "I mean, if you're comfortable with the relatively flat terrain and you want a bit more of a challenge. But you guys have to be extra careful if you do head over there, okay?"

"Zack will have potions," Arthur added, dryly. "If you fail."

"So!" Zack clapped his hands once, pleased as punch with the activity for today, and well-stocked on potions, yes. "What are you guys waiting for? There are rocks to explore!"

Gunn was there and looking at the rocky terrain over carefully.

While munching on a sandwich of course.

Yay sammich. Yay Rocky Bits! Dinah was glad to finally be doing more than flying over these.

Oh please. Like Dinah would pass this up, after climbing in NYC?

"Finally," Dinah said, wandering over to grin at him as she pulled on climbing gloves. "This is going to be awesome."

Zack was there, watching the group carefully for any missteps that might be in need of potions.

And as soon as the reserves let out? He was so going to spend time here running the course himself. Most likely with complete reckless abandon.

Ino was missing the solitude of her normal tree today and ignoring the sandwiches as she idly considered the Rocky Bits and pretended she was listening.

Blah blah blah be safe be careful blah blah blah.

Not that it was a bad thing, mind, for them to say. But still, she wasn't in the mood for it.

Sandwiches. Awesome, because Kennedy was hungry (if kind of itchy and thus mildly paranoid about turning into a hedgehog again), and that probably wasn't much of a surprise.

Nah, this couldn't be that much different from a climbing wall. She could totally rock this.

If you asked her, of course.

Oh, look, there were sandwiches, and that was a good thing, but did we really want Gabrielle attempting to climb rocks? Did we really?

Questions to ponder, perhaps, and Gabrielle was just going to eat her sandwich and leave the pondering to other people.

Tahiri frowned slightly; rock climbing would be a lot easier if the weather let her get away with going barefoot. She didn't want to freeze her feet off. She wasn't worried about finding her way over the rocks at all, just the state of her feet.

Weird girl.

. . . she'd take a sandwich, though.

"My constitution?" Dinah said, amused. "You think I need toughening up? 'Cause I'll do it, dude."

If he was going to climb that, Jake was going to first eat. And keep an eye out to see if Morgana would stick to her word.

Sure, sure. Climbing it was. Sometimes having long legs could be very beneficial.

Gabrielle looked up . . . and up and up and up at the tall boy who reminded her vaguely of Xena for reasons she couldn't quite place. If pressed she wouldn't be able to pinpoint it exactly, but it was a familiar sense of something simmering beneath the surface but kept in check.

That was oddly comforting.

"Could you use a climbing partner?"

"Sure, sure," he replied, glancing up the Rocky Bits. "This isn't how I was expecting to spend my day. You're Gabrielle, right?"

"Who ever plans to spend their day climbing rocks? It's not exactly the sort of thing you wake up in the morning and decide you're going to do with your time," Gabrielle mused. "Unless you do, but . . ."

"That's right." She adjusted her grip on her staff and smiled slightly -- it got easier with practice, she was discovering. "I'm really sorry, but I don't think I caught your name."

"No worries," he said easily, giving her a smile. "I'm Jacob. And to answer your question, I think there's a few rock climbing freaks that do actually. I'm just not one of them."

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"Me neither," she assured him. "Which isn't to say it doesn't happen sometimes, but I prefer not to assume. So, which way are we going to go, and please don't say over all the drop-offs?"

Jacob laughed. "But they look so cool," he teased. "Nah. Whichever way you're like. It looks a bit easier to cross to the sides."
