Alex was tidying up the office today. She had a new employee, and that made her want to spruce the place up. Even if he wasn't due to start for a few days. It couldn't hurt, right?

Roy was down to ten dollars to his name, and wasn't about to go asking Dinah for more money. He saw himself living on ramen and the kindness of others for the next little bit. The time to find a freaking job was now. So he headed into town. When he spotted a 'now hiring' sign modded with permission in the window of the law firm, he hesitated. He'd never thought of working on that part of the law and order continuum. Still, 'Cabot,' that was his teacher's name, right? She was nice enough...

He stepped inside and saw his teacher, all right, and his mind was made up. "Ms. Cabot?"

"Roy," Alex said, smiling at her student. "Come in, please. Did you need help with some legal matters, or are you here to debate yesterday's class?"

Either was welcome. Alex enjoyed a good debate.

"Neither," Roy admitted. "Sorry if you were hoping. I noticed you're hiring?" he said hopefully.

"I am," Alex said, not seeming dismayed by the shift in topic. Employees were just as good as the other two options. "Is there a rumor going around that I give out free candy during shifts? Someone asked yesterday, too."

Not that she objected. In the least.

"Maybe we're just all running out of money at once," Roy said, grinning self-deprecatingly. "If there are rumors, I haven't heard 'em, but I wouldn't object to candy."

"I might have butterscotch in my desk," Alex said, pulling open a drawer and rummaging. Whiskey, she had, but butterscotch seemed beyond her. "I'll get a little dish, or something. So you're interested in the legal profession, or was mine the first door that said 'Now Hiring'?"

"I hadn't given a lot of thought to it? I haven't really given a lot of thought to what I'm going to do when I grow up at all," he admitted. Until recently it had seemed like he'd just dress up and fight crime forever. "But I'd like to give it a shot."

And it had been the first door that said 'Now Hiring.'

"There are a lot of good options out there," Alex nodded. Ooooh, there was her bag of candy. She tugged it onto the desk. "I don't make people promise they're going to law school just to work here. You can get a good look at the criminal justice system, help with some of the legal research if you'd like. And if it's not for you, it's still a job that doesn't leave you smelling like fried fish. Are you free Monday, Friday or Saturday?"

(actually Monday is spoken for OOC but Alex doesn't know that yet!)

"I have a class on Friday," Roy said, "and I've been trying to get some of my online classwork knocked out on Mondays." He hadn't been achieving this goal so much, but he'd tried. "Saturday would be good. I can type and file and that sort of office-type stuff. I helped out at a florist's for a few months before I came here, and she was not really a fan of that part of running a business. I can give you her number if you want to call her to make sure I'm not making this up." Dinah would handwavily say nice things about him, he was sure.

Alex waved a hand easily. "I believe you," she said. "Can you start this weekend? It's mainly answering phones, seating clients, and so on, unless you want to help with the legal research, which does carry with it the promise of candy."

Roy's research skillz were not leet, but, "I can absolutely do research." Money was money, and candy was candy. "This weekend would be great."

"I'll expect you bright and early Saturday," Alex grinned. "I'll be here to give you the once-over, and get you set up. Which also means showing you where the games of Solitaire are, on the computer, for when it's dead and you're sick of research."

Roy laughed. "Thank you," he said. "I really appreciate this."

"Thank me once you're knee-deep in hunting down precedents," Alex laughed. "Or throw things at me when you think I'm not looking. Nobody ever said the law was exciting."

"I promise not to throw things unless it's really necessary," Roy said, only about half-joking. People who'd gotten to know him never bought that he'd been aiming for the trash can and missed because that was, you know, ridiculous. "I've had enough excitement for a while, I think. Precedent-hunting sounds like a good change of pace."
