Atlas Gym - Monday 2/8/10

It had been a good long while since Ashley had a 'normal' job. But since there wasn't much call for professional monster hunters in Fandom, she figured this was at least something she could do to keep busy.

She arrived for her first day and was met by a squealing Jessi who seemed to think that Ash was gong to be her new BFF.

Rose's hair was still wet from swimming when she got back to the gym (the first visit had been at 7am. Someone's mentor was a hardass), and she automatically looked for Dimitri. Hopefully he was finally getting some sleep, but she was kinda expecting to find him crashed out on the couch in his office.

"Hey," she said to the new girl behind the desk. "You were at the thing at Caritas on Saturday, yeah? Did Dimitri just hire you or something?"

"He hired me last week," Ashley said with a nod. "And, yeah, you were there hanging out with that one guy, right?"

"It was work, but yeah," Rose said. She shifted her gym bag and offered her hand. "I'm Rose. Dimitri's ~~mine~~ my teacher."

Ashley shook her hand. "Nice to meet you, Rose. I'm Ashley. I'm guessing you're here a lot?"

"Except when I'm at class pretty much," she agreed. Or when she was having a social life. Which was getting oddly less than before. Huh. She shrugged. "What about you? Where'd you come from?"

"I grew up in Canada," she said. "British Columbia, to be exact. I needed a change of scenery."

For a lot of reasons she wasn't going to talk about.

"And less rain?" Rose snarked. "You should talk to like Deadpool and Constable Fraser. They're all proud of being Canadian. There could be a whole maple syrupy bonding thing."

Not dirty.

Ashley chuckled. "I met Robin when I first got here. And Cable told me there are a lot of fellow Canadians around. I'll have to try and track them down. You go to the school here, I take it?"

"I'm betting if you find the ones playing hockey and wearing fur, they'll be the right ones," she teased, giving Ashley a mischievous look. "Yeah, for another 82 days."

"Hey, now, that's not all Canadians do!" Ashley protested with a smirk. "We eat really weird food, too."

She had to laugh at Rose's other statement though. "Counting down the days, eh?"

Rose wrinkled her nose. "Like...? I hadn't heard about this." Clearly she wasn't talking to Tony enough.

"I've got a friend who's doing it," she admitted. "It just sorta sticks. But yeah, looking forward to getting out into the real world."

Sort of. She wasn't getting into that with a stranger.

"The real world's not all it's cracked up to be," Ash remarked. Not that she had ever lived anything remotely resembling a normal life.

"And, well, I don't think it's weird, but a lot of Americans think poutine is gross. It's french fries topped with cheese curd and gravy."

"Probably depends on what you're looking for," Rose pointed out. She knew exactly what her real world would contain. Protecting Lissa, training, going with her to college, partnering with Dimitri.

"I don't even wanna know what cheese curds are," she said. "It sounds gross just to start."

"See?" Ashley joked. "It's not all about hockey and maple syrup."

"Nah, part of it's about being America's Hat," Rose smirked.

"Would that make Mexico America's feet?" Ashley had to ask.

"More like its tail, I think," Rose decided. "It doesn't so much look like feet."

"So America's either an Abnormal or a furry?"

Ashley was voting for Abnormal because furries were just weird.

Rose tilted her head thoughtfully. "That'd explain a lot, yeah."

"It really kind of would," Ash agreed. "So, where are you from, anyway?"

"Montana," she said. "Right on the edge of the mountains."

"Up near the Canadian border at all?" she asked. "It's pretty there."

"Pretty close, a few hours out of Missoula," Rose replied. She smiled. "Yeah, totally pretty. Cold, too."

"I've been surprised at how cold it's been here since I arrived," Ashley admitted.

"It wasn't up until last month," Rose said. "Before that, it was totally warm like all the time." She made a face. "So weird."

"That is definitely weird," Ash agreed. "I wonder... nah, it's not possible that someone is messing with the weather, is it?"

"Hell if I know," Rose replied instantly. "Do I look like some tv weather dude?"

No orange tan for her, thank you.

"Not quite what I meant."

Though, no, Ashley could not picture Rose plastering on a cheesy smile and pointing at a weather map.

"There are people here with abilities, right? Maybe one of them controls the weather?"

She considered it for a moment. "Probably someone can," she said. "They can do everything else. But it's not like there's a point to it."

"Yeah, I guess not. Oh, well, I'm sure I can find enough to keep me occupied even if it is cold," she said.

"It's pretty rarely boring around here," Rose told her easily. "I bet you'll be fine."

She tossed her bag over her shoulder. "I've should get training," she said apologetically. "Dimitri'll be here soon enough."

"Sure, I don't want to hold you up," Ash said. "I'm sure I'll see you around."

"Every day," Rose said wryly.

Not that she minded.

"Nice talking to you," she said as she headed over to the weights.

That's what the gym is for, right?
