The Perk [Monday evening]

Tonight, after taking Trenor for a brisk trot around the island, Aravis was both too restless and too cold to attempt to go back to her room and find herself both tea and entertainment.

Instead, drawing her cloak more snugly around herself, she ventured into town to the Perk, where she got herself not only a pot of tea but several little chocolate, flaky things. Along with the book she'd stashed in her satchel (with apples for Trenor, since he'd been so good lately), she decided it made quite a fine evening. Most things were improved by chocolate and people-watching.

"My lady," Mat said with a smile as he walked into the shop. "How are you this evening?"

"I spent too much time inside last week," Mat said, making a face. "I caught some kind of illness."

"No, it disappeared after I went out into the vanilla rain," Mat said, making another face. "This island is bloody strange."

"I smelled like chocolate for a week," Mat said, "and I didn't even like it. It was a bloody tragedy."

"It was fine for the first few days but then I was just itchy and uncomfortable," Mat whined.

"I was," Mat said solemnly, "and you didn't come by with soup. I should hold that against you."

Because she would have known you were sick when you didn't call, Mat.

"Can't cook either?" Mat teased, trying to swipe one of her pastries.

"What's your favorite thing to make?" Mat asked, calling her bluff like the gambler he was.

"I love cake," Mat admitted with a grin. "Egwene--you met her, right?--her mother was easily the best cook in the Two Rivers. I've still never tasted anything better than her honey cakes."

He chuckled. "I haven't seen any honey cakes at the bakery. Do you think they would try if we requested them? I'd give you one even if you've been difficult."

"I hadn't noticed," Mat lied. "I'm not sure I'm going to learn anything from it, either."

"I like your opinions," Mat said. "People who just stand there are bloody dull."

He leaned in a bit. "And sometimes other things," he added.

"That too," Mat replied, smiling.
