Valentine's Day Dance | Town Hall | Saturday Evening [8pm on] (Post 2)

The streamers were a little less twisted into a canopy now.  Some were hanging down onto the dance floor now.  The hearts were also looking a little ragged.  Some had ripped, more were hanging upside down.  Possibly like the hearts of some of the dance attendees.

And the punch was spiked.  Don't forget that.

[Second post same as the first!]

"Oh, it's always a good trip when no one gets throttled," Jack said, reaching for more punch. "It's like you get two springs instead of one! And spring is a lovely season, Karla. You're lucky."

He added, "You didn't miss anything here."

Karla handed another mug of punch over. "Spring in Catalan was lovely," she admitted. "Warm, with fragrant breezes and citrus trees we could eat off of. Unfortunately, it was the company that made it less than pleasant," she said with a moue of displeasure. "You try to spend months with a couple who are younger than you--Hell's fire, the male is younger than me--and already married and trying to get pregnant. It's creepy! And they were annoying, even when they weren't talking about babies."

Jack wrinkled his nose. "Why would anyone want a child at this age? I thought Ender was from some enlightened future."

Straight people. Honestly.

"Damned if I know!" Karla said, exasperated. "But if that's enlightened, I'll happily take the benighted present, thanks. But I don't think so. When we were there, they were in the middle of at least one war, just gotten over a second, and were on the brink of a third."

"Valentine didn't make it sound as bad as it is," Jack said. "She told me their brother runs the world. Not that he did it badly."

He shook his head. "It almost sounds like the middle ages, but with computers."

"Peter is an absolute git and I told him so," Karla said with withering scorn. "He supposedly rescued this male who was a serial murderer and kidnapper, the male who'd almost single-handedly started these wars, all because he thought he could bring Achilles to heel." She used the Spanish pronunciation, Ah-sheel. "Nearly got himself killed, but Ben, Bean, and his parents saved his ass instead. Idiot."

"... did you see Valentine?"

Jack wasn't sure what he had to say about any of that beyond the soft noise of sympathy he made from low in his throat. He did, however, still miss Ender's sister.

"Briefly," Karla said, nodding. "She got us the portal over and the meeting with Peter-the-Idiotic-Hegemon."

Karla still wasn't entirely sure how she felt about Ender's sister. On the one hand, she'd liked Valentine while the other female was here. On the other, she was adult enough to admit (to herself anyway) that she was envious of how close Emma and Valentine had been. On still another, she knew they never would have gotten to Ender without Val's help. And on the last hand (was she on feet now?), Karla resented being used to bring Ender to heel.

"She seemed well," she offered in lieu of anything else. "Political machinations seemed to agree with her."
