The Arms Hotel Lobby, Friday [2/19]

Mary felt very comfortable in her strapless bustier top and skinny jeans until she got to the lobby. The area around the front desk was very drafty and it wasn't long until she got cold. It was bad enough that Mary was tempted to grab extra towels from the laundry and wrap herself with them. But that would have looked silly, so she sat and shivered.

Given the number of times Jake had fallen asleep on his dad's couch (or floor) in lieu of actually making it upstairs to his room, one would think he's not terribly picky about where he slept.

Well, okay, that was true... to a certain degree. When he was drunk. But anyway, he wasn't drunk and he also wasn't sure how long he'd be in this place, so he was getting himself a better room, shag it all.

"'Ello there," he greeted the woman at the desk, using all of his willpower to keep his eyes on her face and not her, uh... well.

"Hello. Is there something I can do for you?" asked Mary, taking a good look at the newcomer.

"I needs a better room- were you just checking me out?" Focus, Jake. Focus.

"What?"

She'd caught a lot of people checking her out, but Mary had never been accused of doing the same.

"No, I wasn't checking you out, honest! I was just trying to figure out if I'd seen you before, and I haven't, so I was just looking..." Mary could really babble on and on when she got flustered.

"If you're sure," Jake said with a wink. Mary, meet Jake's ego. "Anyway. Name's Jake Doyle, got here late last night? The room was fine enough, but as I'm thinking I'd like to stick around for a bit more, if ye've got anything better, luh, I wouldn't say no."

The wink left Mary even more flustered. Really, this wasn't very professional of her to get caught checking out a guest!

"I'm sure I can find you a much nicer room, Mr. Doyle," she said. "Was there something specific you were looking for? An ocean view? Kitchen? Hot tub?"

He hadn't been looking for anything more specific than "more space", but if they had hot tubs... he wasn't gonna turn that down. "Hot tub sounds nice, I think."

"That shouldn't be a problem, unless you want one of those fancy heart-shaped hot tubs," said Mary. "I only have one of those, and it's in the honeymoon suite."

"Oh, no," Jake said quickly. "Trust me, I'm all honeymooned out for the next little while. Just a regular one'll do."

"Oh?" said Mary, raising an eyebrow. "I'm, uh, sorry to hear that," she said, flipping through a sheet of papers on her clipboard until she found the room listing she needed.

"Don't be," Jake waved a hand dismissively. "We're both better off without each other. Just took getting married for us to realise that."

"Suppose I should count myself as lucky, then," said Mary. "I've been engaged twice but have yet to make it down the aisle. In fact, one of my ex's is now living with the mother of his child but still hasn't managed to marry her."

Which just reminded Jake of Nikki and that whole pregnancy test debacle (he was still convinced she'd planted it there on purpose) "Oi," Jake muttered, running a hand through his hair. "Love's a tricky thing, innit?"

"It can get pretty complicated," said Mary. "And just when you think you've got it all worked out, life throws you a curveball."

"In your short history upon this earth, one thing has remained true: any time you get within 50 yards of Stacey Layton, you end up broken-hearted and a complete jackass," he'd never, ever admit it out loud, but events of the past few weeks had got him thinking that maybe his dad had a point.

"Hopin' the curveballs won't be finding me here," Jake admitted.

Mary chuckled, knowing full well that Fandom has worse things than curveballs. "Here's hoping the gremlins don't find you, either," said Mary. "Here's your new room key. You're in room 404."

At least Gunther is decently dressed.

Oh, Nikki and your near-nakedness...
