Castiel still had no idea what to think of the visitors who'd come to the island for the convention -- especially one in particular. Gabriel assured him that Dean hadn't actually said "yes". Which meant the brothers were still out there, fighting. Without his help.

They were probably screwed.

Angelbane's kittens were progressing nicely, starting to do a bit more than just tumble over on top of each other and nurse. Karal was especially precocious, taking up a post on the edge of the nest, as though to guard it. Bobby still had a tendency to trip over her own feet. The other three occasionally stared at Castiel accusingly, as though he really ought to have named them, already.

Before blowing town again, there was one person he wanted to look in on. So he flew by, landing in a flutter of wing to lounge on the pew nearest the kittens.

"This being a church and all, shouldn't you have a congregation in here just now?"

Oh look, if it wasn't the angel in question.

"I give sermons on Thursdays. No one in town has objected to that schedule, as far as I know."

"Yeah? What kind of sermons?" Gabriel asked curiously.

Castiel wasn't sure how to answer that. "The . . . usual kind, I should think."

He'd never actually been to a human lead service.

"Like fire and brimstone kind? Or all helpful parables?"

"I occasionally discuss the specifics of Hell. I've also described Heaven. I have a very interesting one prepared on the mechanics of kitten birth."

"Yeah?" Gabriel almost wished he could hang around to Thursday to hear it; he had a feeling it would be unintentionally hilarious. "Care to give me a little preview?"

"I don't have my slides prepared."

Oh Castiel. He really was the nerd angel.

Oh yeah, this sounded like it was going to be comedy gold! "I'm sorry I'm going to miss it," he said sincerely.

"I'm . . . not. You have made something of a reputation for yourself, after all. My church is a solemn one."

"If you mean I'm entertaining, then yes, yes I am," Gabriel said with a smirk and an eyebrow waggle.

"You kill people. Ironically."

"Yeah, but I do it entertainingly," Gabriel said. "And it's only those that really deserve it. I don't go running around randomly knocking off innocents."

Call it curiosity, but Joshua couldn't leave town without seeing the church.

He wandered through the aisles, avoiding looking at the crucifix at the front.

Castiel looked up from the kittens. "Can I help you?"

"Are you in charge of this church?" Joshua asked.

"I am, yes. I'm Castiel."

Joshua smiled. "Hello, Castiel. I'm Joshua."

Castiel narrowed his eyes slightly. "Joshua. You seem . . . familiar."

Josh nodded his head toward the crucifix. "Maybe a bit."

Castiel glanced back, then towards Joshua, then back again. "Ah. It's not the best likeness."

"A lot of them seem to forget I'm not European," Joshua replied with a smile.

"Yes, I've noticed that. They haven't done very well with the texts, either. You're here for the conference?"

Josh nodded. "I conducted a lecture on parables yesterday."

"I've tried a few of those. My congregation didn't seem to get it." They never got anything Castiel said. It was more a reflection on him then on them as a group.
