Before today, Jack's life had been blessedly free of such questions as whether flowers had feelings and personalities.
He was rapidly learning that they did. The flowers sprouting from Ms. Cabot's file cabinets spent the morning critiquing Jack, his work habits, the way he made coffee, and the amount of time he spent trying to tame his hair. (They were of the opinion that it looked like a birds' nest no matter what he did.)
Jack thought they had all gone quiet as he settled down with a stack of case materials to read, but then:
"What's that?" a lily piped up.
"Work," Jack said shortly.
"What kind of work?"
"Never mind," Jack said, then answered, "It's about criminal precedents in filesharing cases."
"Oh. What's filesharing?"
... Jack and the curious lily might be at this for a while.
