Pixie Dust; Tuesday [ 05/25 ].
It was Ariel's first day at work! At a job! A human job!
This was intense.
Of course, she didn't want to screw it up by completely ignoring what her job entailed so that she could go ooh and aah at all the pretty human clothing. She did, admittedly, do a little bit of that when she opened, but she could easily argue (or would argue, if she could talk) that she was just doing the rounds to make sure everything was in order before she opened.
Thankfully, though, the temptation of the clothes wouldn't be too bad, thanks to the distraction of fashion magazines. She could maintain her spot at the counter and flip through those, and there was absolutely no shortage of interesting things within! It was a fascinating study of humans that just wasn't available to her back home. And so pretty! And she was surely getting quite a few ideas on what some of these things that were so new to her were all about...
...pity no one really told her that fashion ads, as a rule, made no sense and rarely conveyed anything even close to real life.

Pixie Dust is open!

Come to think of it, he could use some modern clothes.
"Ariel!" he greeted as he came through the door. "Hello. I didn't know you worked here, but then I've never been in. How are you?"
no subject
No, Ariel couldn't really remember his name, but she did remember the whole truth, beauty, freedom and love thing, especially the freedom part, but the love part was the most important and so, in her brain, it became thus abridged.
It was just as exciting to see him as it was to notice that he remembered her name. She was worried that the whole no speaking thing might have put him off. She smiled brightly and waved, then shrugged her shoulders a little because she'd only just started. A thumbs up for good, and then smiling head tilt to return the question back at him. How was he? Good? He looked good, but of course, that wasn't a surprise.

"I think I like being in the cabins -- the woods are so pleasant. But my cabin has an odd name. Do you know what a Godzilla is?"

She realized that probably only half of that had any chance of being conveyed, stopped, looked over at Love Guy with an apologetic smile. She gave a nod, the sort that said that a giant lizard from the ocean that fought things was still pretty cool.
Anything from the ocean was cool. Obviously.

He added, "Which one did they put you in? Anything equally mysterious?"

Well, worth a try. Carefully, she held up a hand and slowly went through the letters to spell out Z-O-M-B-I-E in sign language, followed by an expectant look his way to see if he knew what that meant.

"I don't know" -- he bit his lip apologetically, then thought of something and went into his coat pocket. Small notebooks were a gift for writers, and Christian was never without one.
She slid the paper and a stub of a pencil to her, putting them atop her magazine. "Can you write it down? I'm sorry to be so slow."
no subject
...which gave Ariel a whole new idea on what she could do for entertainment, but she'd save that for later.
Glad that Love Guy had the notebook, because she was about to resort to receipt paper, she took up the pencil easily enough and scribbled down:
"Zombie! I don't know what one of those are, either. I didn't think to look it up. :\ It sounds fun, though! "
no subject
"I don't know what a zombie is either," he said. "It can be a mystery for both of us." He scratched the back of his neck thoughtfully and added, "The thing with your hand -- was that sign language?"
no subject
"Yes! Leda taught me some the other day. Just a little bit, the alphabet and a few words. Helpful, but only if the other person knows it, too!"

A-R-I-E-L
Somehow, even with sign language, she managed to punctuate it with the ever present exclamation point. It was right there in her smile, in her bright eyes.
And the gratitude for the fact that her name was a short one! It would get tiresome spelling it all the time if it was longer.
She did bite her lip, though, a moment afterwards. It would be perfect if she could then point to him and show him how to do his name, but she couldn't remember it. Which she felt should be totally understandable; there was a lot to learn as it was!

"And mine," he added thoughtfully -- he expected her to know his name, but not necessarily how it was spelled -- "would be C, H, R" -- he could copy the signs for R and I from her name, and did -- "I-S-T-I-A" -- oh, A was another one he knew --"N. Can you show me?"
no subject
Actually, that wasn't a bad idea at all, but it would seem rather sudden and she wasn't sure if it was supposed to work that way, and, besides, she was pretty sure Thursday was a done deal on that front.
Really, though, it was wise of him to spell it for her; even if she'd have known it, she'd probably have butchered it.
So, all that aside, of course she could show him. She went through the letters in her head first: CHRISTIAN. Now she could actually remember his name and not just call him Love Guy, although she did sort of like that as a nickname. And it was a long one! It was going to challenge her a little, so she thought about it and then started in slowly on the letters. She had trouble remembering H, but after that it was pretty smooth sailing.

And for Love Guy, that would just be sad.
He copied the letter shapes carefully as she made them, including her slight bobble on the H. "Christian," he repeated. "Thank you. You're clever, to remember the whole alphabet so well."
no subject
She then put her hand to her mouth and brought it down in front of her, smiling at Christian before picking up the pencil to explain.
"That's how you say thank you in sign language."
And, again, she showed him how.
