The information about Victor Dashkov's trial - and the fact that she and Lissa were apparently not allowed to go - turned over and over in Rose's head. There had to be a way. Maybe if Dimitri spoke to someone else or if Lissa did. But she didn't want to worry Lissa with this information without having a solution for her first, and...

Rose worked halfheartedly, washing down the mats and barely even responding to Jessi's snide comments about the new girlfriend who was emailing Dimitri. There had to be a way to get them there to make sure that Victor Dashkov was locked up forever.

It had been way, way too long since Elena had talked to Rose, especially considering everything that had happened the last month and how much alcohol was going to be required to not think about most of it.

One look at Rose's face told her she wasn't the only one having a rough time of it.

"I should have brought liquor," she said.

"I wish," Rose replied immediately, giving Elena a tired smile as she came in. "What's up, you? It feels like it's been forever."

"It does," she agreed. "And it looks like you're having as shitty a day as I am. You wanna go first?"

Rose's might be more immediate. Elena's was sort of continual, in a low-grade way.

After a moment, she added, "I can go get liquor."

She shook her head, a little reluctantly. "Dimitri would flip his shit, and I'm on duty tonight, but thanks." She dried the mat off and slid onto it, offering the other half to Elena. "Freshly washed seat? And you go for it, mine's just frustrating."

"Are you sure?" she asked, crossing her legs and sitting on the mat. Wondering if it would help to do meditations. "Mine's ... I don't know how to sum it up. Crazy-making. Have you noticed another blonde on the island, running around in a black suit?"

The suit did stand out, so that might help.

"Crazy-making works," Rose agreed, with a tiny smile. "Seems typical of around here." She considered the question, trying to remember and hampered a little by her night schedule. "Vaguely? Yeah, I remember noticing and wondering. Is she one of yours?"

Why did she not bring liquor? Seriously.

"You ... could say that," Elena said, carefully. "She's my sister."

Which ... barely scratched the surface, but at least Rose would know this wasn't happy news, from the context.

That was...holy crap. Rose didn't have any words for this.

"I ... might," she said, surprised she could find words. "She's sixteen. She thinks I'm supposed to be nine. Did I ... I mean, I told you what happened to her, didn't I?"

Because the answer wasn't "she married a nice guy and moved to the suburbs." Not that Rose would be very surprised. That was a rarity, in their line of work.

"I - don't think you said exactly," Rose replied. "I kinda assumed your family wasn't - in the picture." Which was a nice way of saying she thought they were dead.

From random conversations with Jaina, she'd thought a lot about if a random person from her world showed up younger - Mason maybe or her mom. But a sister that was supposed to be older...damn.

Whether she heard him approach or not, Dimitri made his way to the mats and had a seat beside her. "Mats are looking clean."

Rose looked up in surprise and then smiled as he sat down. "They better or I'm wasting my time."

"It's a good feeling when you can see the difference in the before and after," he commented slowly, giving the mats another look.

"You've done it better," Rose agreed. She shifted her foot to nudge him lightly. "What's up?"

She read him too well, but it was good to just get the news out. "I spoke with Guardian Petrov earlier. We'll be going back to Montana at the end of the week for some training."

"Did she say anything about the trial?" she asked instantly, her eyes lighting up a little at the thought. If they had to go back then maybe this was part of it?

"Rose, still no," he said, trying to brush past that topic quickly. "We're going to give you some field experience practice with the other novices in a more traditional atmosphere. But you're sure to see Lissa." Dimitri thought this prospect should raise her spirits a bit.

No, no, no, I went to bed. I just didn't sleep once I was there. It is an annoying conundrum.
