Luke's Diner [Tuesday, June 8]

Today, Sookie didn't go into the minds of the kitchen staff at all. She actually made a point to wear the necklace Karla had given her, in fact, so she wouldn't be able to hear them.

Call it a hunch.

And it turned out to be a good idea, considering that when she had to go back to the kitchen at all, she was met with catcalls, whoops, and the kinds of comments they usually kept in their heads. Charming. She could not wait for this to wear off.

Luke's was open. Don't mind the blonde who was rather unprofessionally eating pancakes. (Sookie was pretty sure she could taste the orchard the apples were grown in. That was a perk of this weirdness, she guessed.)

Tara was hungry after class, and she didn't quite feel like cooking, so she wandered into the diner. She grinned when she spotted Sookie.

"I didn't know you worked here," she said, perching on a stool, then blurted, "And you look really seriously amazing."

"Thanks," she said, answering the second bit first, and blushed fairly substantially. "It's temporary. The, um, looks, not the job. That I've had for like two months -- the weirdness," she gestured at her face, "will be gone soonish. How're you?"

"At least it's not bad weirdness?" Tara offered, squinting a little to bring Sookie's aura into focus. She looked thoughtful; it wasn't wrong, just -- different. Flashier, maybe. She wouldn't have noticed anything unusual about it if she didn't know Sookie already. "I'm good," she added absently, still mulling this over and wondering if asking more would be nosy. "It's been kind of a quiet couple days. We played checkers in Kerrigan's class."

Sookie tilted her head at the squinting and thoughtfulness, because it was a hair different from the normal reaction she'd been receiving. She didn't press forward and read Tara, mostly because the shielding from the necklace stopped the impulse, and she reconsidered. Though now she was curious, if only because she knew Tara could see stuff that normal people wouldn't. "So I keep hearing -- Kennedy and Bobby both said it's been pretty dull around here. Um, are you sure it's not bad weirdness? You look thinky."

"Your aura's a little ... I don't even know the word," Tara said, resting her chin on her folded hands. "It's like your looks -- just sort of shinier than it used to be, you know? If it was bad different I'd probably be more, um, more freaked out."

As Jak had found. Tara weighed her next question carefully before asking:

"Do you want to talk about whatever happened?"

"I can. Do you want me to get you something, and I can tell you the story while they're making your food?" Sookie offered, biting her lower lip. "It's not that long a story, but it's sort of getting a...reaction."

She sort of wondered if Tara would have the same reaction as Kennedy and Bobby had ~~since theirs were identical down to the italics~~, or if she'd be more like Karla.

"Um, Cobb salad and a milkshake, please?" Tara requested. "And tell me whenever you're ready."

She was trying not to sound too eager, but she was curious.

Sookie wrote it down and tossed it into the back, ignoring the catcalls again, before coming back to Tara. "So, the short story is that I got beaten up and had to be healed in an, um, atypical way, and it's having some side effects."

"Oh my God," Tara said, blinking more than a bit. "Are you okay now? How did they heal you? What happened?"

... more like Bobby and Kennedy, then.

"I'm fine," she promised, hurrying with that. "Seriously, I'm fine. Um, what happened is -- okay, have I told you about how we have vampires back home?"

"Yeah?" Tara said, trying to remember. "It's been a while, but yeah. You said they weren't all ... y'know. All evil like mine and Kennedy's."

She sounded dubious on this point.

"Well, the other thing about them is that their blood is a kind of drug in my world. One came into the bar where I was, on Saturday night, and he met up with some people who were gonna drain him. So...I stopped them, and that sorta ticked 'em off, so they found me the next night and nearly kicked me to death. And then my vampire friend stopped them, and -- this is icky, but he made me drink his blood. That's how I got better, and why I look like this. It's why they wanted to drain him in the first place, 'cause it has this effect."

She paused, and added, "And he was nice, yeah. Kind of creepy, but nice."

Tara's mouth hung open for a moment as she tried to parse all of that. "So -- you drank his blood, but it helped, it didn't just turn you into a vampire?" she asked. "My god. I guess I'm glad he was there, but ... were you scared? I would have been so scared."

"I was terrified," she said honestly. "And if it'd turned me, I wouldn't have done it. But I thought I was gonna die, so...here I am."

"And it's definitely better that you didn't die," Tara nodded, but she still wished Sookie hadn't needed to make the choice. "So ... you got to be really really pretty because of it? Not that you aren't anyhow."

"Super-pretty," she said, nodding with a blush. "And I have crazy senses, too. I can smell and taste everything better, and I'm really strong. It'll go away once his blood leaves my system, though. 'Least, that's what he said."

"So I guess you just have to enjoy it while it lasts?" Tara tried. She wouldn't have wanted to go through what Sookie went through, but the results were definitely cool.

"I guess," she said, shrugging. "I mean, there's nothing I can really do about it. And as far as side-effects go, being able to taste the orchard where my apples grew and having my boyfriend's eyes fall out of his head at how I look? Not bad."

Sookie wasn't sure why they couldn't just say 'Western,' with this one.
