Magic & Support Reserves Meeting, Magic Box, Wednesday After Classes

Magic & Support Reserves met in the Magic Box today, clustering around a small sitting area between the bookshelves and the counter.

"Welcome to the shop," Tara began, softly but without a stammer. She was trying not to let her memory of what had happened last time she led a meeting get in her way too badly. "If you haven't been in, this is the Magic Box, and it's the island's magic and new age supply shop. If you -- or someone you're working with -- wants to do a spell and needs the kind of components we talked about last week, this is usually a good place to start looking. We're going to take a quick tour and then play a game."

She aimed a soft smile at the group, then started walking. "So, these are the books," she said, gesturing to the shelves. "Some of them are old, some of them are new, some of them are more accurate than others. You can look through them but don't read aloud unless you really know what you're doing, 'cause some spells work just from being spoken. I found that out by accident when I was eight."

Karla closed her mouth and slid the book she'd been leafing through back on its shelf. "Yes. Let's be careful in here, guys," she said, turning a little pink.

"Back here," she added, as she continued into the shelves of fresh and dried plants, "are the plant supplies. The shelves are labeled with the species names and what kind of magic you typically use them for. Some of them smell really pretty."

"And this is my favorite part," she said in the next aisle. "These are crystals. They're for ... sort of for luck? And for focusing your intent. You have to purify them when you get them unless you know what they've been used for. I have one that's been in my family for fifty years, b-back in my room."

She walked the group through the rest of the store, showing off wands, chalices, knives, amulets, candles, and tarot cards, before they ended back in the front of the shop.

"We're playing a game in three teams today," she said, nodding to the other reserve heads to bring out closed cardboard boxes "These mystery boxes have five things from the store in them each. The game is to look them over, identify them, and then try to figure out what they're for and where they belong in the shop. The team that gets their stuff identified and reshelved first wins a prize." The prize was cupcakes. The same cupcakes that were on the counter for a snack, yes. "Does that make sense?"

She hoped it did.

Peter totally had the look of 'what am I doing here' on his face. Accepting magic as a force was one thing, walking into a new age store was another.

Tim had to take a look at the books. He pulled an old volume off the shelf and carefully opened it to the table of contents. He didn't know much about magic, but he'd been taught to handle old books.

"I have a present for you!" Karla sang, handing over a brown paper bag. She'd been kind and decided not to go with one of the bright pink ones with "DITE'S" emblazoned on it. "Though you probably don't want to open it here. There's also a book in there. Cassidy had a book on Protocol she was willing to lend, so I didn't have to write home for one."

Alex grinned, wondering if she could remember where everything was since she'd just been in for her shift on Monday. This would be fun.

Diana had left Samuel behind and was now looking around to see what was in stock.

Cassidy was indeed here and looking at everything that she could look at.

Blackagar was totally a mingling machine. Look at him... lurk about. All social-like.

Woooo! Go, Black Bolt!

Peter just sort of stared. And vaguely wondered how fast he'd get slapped if he suggested half the stuff belonged in the trash.

"They're not going to bite." Diana said, walking over to the other member of team A.

Emmett turned the wand over in his hands, studying the knob, and remarked with a sigh, "You guys aren't even trying to give me a challenge, are you."

"It's a wand, right? Do you know where it goes?" Tim asked. He actually meant that innocently.

Because it looked so lonely Blackagar was over by Team C, peering down at the items. This was probably not the most helpful thing for him considering the nature of his abilities, but he was always willing to learn.

And lurk moar.

Even if this was perilously close to a job. A menial job. Tricky, reserve leaders. Very tricky.

Karla was there for the first half of the meeting. Then her phone beeped with a message from Sookie. She barely had time to garble out, "Emergency, gotta go," before she was gone.

Emmett might also have been wondering how many of those nice-smelling herbs had alternate uses, but he wasn't wondering out loud, at least.
