The Perk [Monday, Afternoon]

When you had too much time on your hands, Angela was finding that you could only take so much time out on the beach, and in order to split that an air conditioned coffee shop was a great place to spend a little of that time. Iced coffee, since it was still way too hot out for anything warm, but it still counted.

And she had some plans to make. Which she should have made a few weeks ago, but was getting to now, jotting down ideas of places she could stop in and where they might have jobs going.

There was possibly still more idle doodling, coffee drinking, and muffin eating happening than there was job finding...

Hoshi had the rental section of a couple of different newspapers and was looking forward to an afternoon of picking out apartments. However, the newspaper itself seemed to be a distraction. She kept crinkling the paper, amused by the texture and sound. There weren't a whole of of publications in the future that actually used newsprint.

She waved at Angela while waiting for the barista to make her iced cappuccino. "How's it going?" she asked.

"Disturbingly quietly," Angela answered, shooting her a grin despite that. "Which I'm not actually even considering complaining about. But around here, quiet is a little weird, right?"

"Definitely," agreed Hoshi with a smile. "When it gets too quiet, you have to worry about what the island is planning on throwing at you in the near future. The little quirks just let you know that it's not storing up weirdness for something big."

"And you just know because we're leaving soon, it'll just have to cook up something big." Hopefully something fun, and not something horrible.

That was unlikely, but Angela liked to think positively.

"It'll be like the island is saying good-bye!" laughed Hoshi. "Of course, I'm not going to be too far away, so hopefully the island doesn't shoot any weirdness at me on the mainland."

"Already figured out exactly what you're doing?" That was probably further ahead than Angela was, at least.

Well, she knew where she was going. It was the other details that still needed some serious ironing out. She'd get there. Eventually.

"Sort of. It feels like I'm doing a little bit of everything," said Hoshi. "It's a combination of taking classes at a university in my world but staying with another friend in an apartment on the mainland. I don't want to completely leave Fandom behind yet."

It was going to be very tough when Hoshi eventually had to join the crew of a space ship.

"That is... a pretty big commute for classes," More than she'd be willing to go in for. "What are going to be studying?"

"Advanced linguistics," said Hoshi. "It's pretty involved stuff, so I felt I was better off taking it somewhere in the future."

She hesitated a moment for adding, "I also waited just a little too long to apply to most of the schools on the east coast."

Angela laughed, not quite able to help it. "Oh, sweetie, I was almost right there with you." Avoiding the future for as long as possible cut deadlines very fine. "The world out there seems to fly past without us even noticing things like college applications."

"It really didn't help that I didn't know what to do," said Hoshi. "I had planned on joining the new Starfleet back home after graduation, but when I realized that wasn't going to work, I had no back-up plan."

"Ended up a little too attached to our little planet?" Angela asked, grinning as she sipped at her frappuccino.

"I think it's a matter of being more attached to the planet and less attached to a certain captain than I thought I was," said Hoshi. "I'm glad things worked out the way they did. I can't imagine leaving the planet to explore the universe and leaving all my friends behind."

"I can't really imagine going back to my own time," Angela admitted. "Even with the option of portals, and all that sort of thing... Plus, I really don't know how a high school diploma from the future would go down."

"That is definitely tricky," said Hoshi. "I feel lucky that I found a university that didn't have problems with my transcripts from Fandom High, though I did get some interesting questions about the classes I had listed."

"I was just really lucky that art schools, don't really care if you take some fruity classes, provided you can draw." So long as she'd graduated, she'd found they didn't honestly give a damn.

"I could've given them the details, and they'd probably have called it 'creative' or something."

Now that Piper was back in Fandom for a little while, she was going to partake in the caffeinated goodness The Perk had to offer as much as she could. After ordering an iced caramel macchiato (it was too hot for coffee), she smiled and nodded at Angela in acknowledgment.

"Hey," she said casually as she headed toward a nearby table.

Angela grinned and offered her a wave. "Tell me you're not another one of those weird people who thinks hot drinks cool you down?" She'd heard that from the barista, and still refused to believe it.

To Angela, it was perfectly reasonable to ask a complete stranger something like that, yes.

Piper chuckled. "No, especially not in this humidity. Though I have been known to drink coffee during the summer. But it wasn't to cool down."

"Study aid?" Angela guessed. "I don't do serious enough subjects for that one, really." Art didn't require quite the same all-nighters, for which she was really, really grateful. "Or, didn't." It was a rare person in Fandom who did.

"There were many all-nighters when I was in college. Hopefully there won't be too many more of those in my future," Piper replied. "I don't think teaching a cooking class will require those as much."

"Or at least, only if you're going to spend all night up baking cookies," Angela noted. "Teaching up at the school?" she asked. "Are you new?" Vaguely familiar, but still, not a teacher she recognised.

"Yeah, I'll be teaching competitive cooking," Piper replied. "I'm not exactly new, but I probably am to the current students. I was a student here a few years ago."

"Oh!" Well that was neat. "Well, as a fellow alum... Welcome back!" she offered cheerfully. "And hi, I'm Angela."

"Hi, Angela," Piper grinned. "I'm Piper. Thanks for the welcome. So you're a student here?"

"I was until a month or so ago," Angela shared. "Now I'm a lazy graduate who spends way too much time sunbathing and drinking coffee."

"That's not a bad way to spend time. Congratulations on gradating from this school and surviving," Piper said with a slight laugh. "Do you have any plans?"

"In September, Art School," she answered, nodding. "Until then... not as many as I probably should have." Angela tapped her pad of paper in some illustrative gesture. "But I'm working on it." Sort of. "Between iced lattes."

"Good luck with Art School," Piper said sincerely. "In the meantime, if you're looking for something to do, I could always use another TA."

"I don't think you want me near anything you're cooking," Angela admitted with a snicker. "I'm sort of a take out connoisseur."

"Well, all I'd really need you to do is be a taste tester, which admittedly could be a health hazard. So there is that warning," Piper chuckled.
