The Perk, Saturday Afternoon

Maybe it wasn't quite the season for hot chocolate, but a craving was a craving, and Kate tended to go with her cravings a whole lot of the time. And at least it was a little less hot today. So a hot chocolate she had, sitting near the back at the Perk this mellow Saturday afternoon.

She had an issue of Cosmo with her, but she was keeping an eye on her surroundings, in case any interesting people happened to wander in. She still hadn't even met too many of the new students or anything, after all.

Sookie was sad to report that this morning had found her with a broken coffeemaker. So when she figured she could forge ahead through it, only to promptly be hit by a midafternoon slump of exhaustion, she figured she would be fine heading into town to treat herself to something at the Perk.

Besides, she could usually count on running into interesting people there. She took a moment to peek at what Kate was reading before asking, "What's Cosmo telling us to do this month? Anything worthwhile?"

"We should all be ourselves, but also lose weight and buy more make-up, so that we can catch that absolutely dreamy hunk we're crazy about," Kate reported, flipping through a few pages. "And then drive him wild with these five handy tips they have here."

She looked up and quirked a lopsided smile at the other girl. "Hey, Sookie."

"Hi, Kate. Gotta love the whole 'be yourself -- but a prettier version!' thing they push," Sookie said, rolling her eyes. "Those tips are almost definitely useless, too."

"What, you don't think they can find five new ways of getting guys off every month?" Kate asked, raising her eyebrows. Then she snorted. "Yeah. It's still entertaining, though."

"It is until someone puts it into practice," she said, making a face. "Unfortunate side effect of telepathy -- I know way too much about when those Cosmo tricks don't go well. Plus, it cannot possibly be so difficult that they have to come up with that many different ways! Aren't guys the easy ones?"

"Yeah, they generally are," Kate said, but she sounded pretty distracted all of a sudden. She had a reason. "Wait. You're a telepath?"

That... was news. Not the concept, of course, since Kate knew Emma, but. Yeah. News.

Sookie arched a brow, smiling a little. "You didn't know that? Yeah. Um, a shielded one, though. I try not to listen to people if I can help it."

"Well, that's good to know." Funnily enough, that wasn't even Kate's main concern when it came to this. Oh no. "Please don't tell me Jason has some random powers too."

Spoken like a girl destined to only ever be involved with guys with something wrong with them.

Sookie shook her head emphatically. "Nope, he's normal. I mean, Jason's version of normal, anyway. He doesn't even really want to believe in what I can do, to be honest. So don't worry."

"I'm not worried." Except about how Jason still came from a place where telepaths existed. Seriously, was hardly anyone around here from a world like Kate's? "I'm totally cool. Still, nice to hear."

Sookie quirked a smile at her. "You know, I have no way to contact the Jason who was here, but if you ever wanna meet the one who's my actual big brother, I can arrange that," she offered.

Kate couldn't help making a slight face at that. "Uh, thanks for the offer, but no, I... think I'll pass. I mean, it'd be weird to even meet my Jason."

... She valiantly kept herself from facepalming after realizing that little word had slipped in there. Since when was he her Jason?

"It'd be even weirder to meet one that doesn't even know who I am. My life's weird enough as it is."

See, that sort of made Sookie smile more. Awww. 'Her' Jason. That was cute. "I figured it would be kinda weird but I wanted to offer. If he decides to come for parents' weekend, though, I'll give you a heads up, though," she promised. "He's technically my guardian now, and all."

"I'd appreciate that," Kate nodded. "Though knowing that might happen is almost warning enough. At least it won't be a huge surprise." She shrugged. "So, guardian, huh? How's that working out? I don't expect he's actually doing all that much to... I don't know, guard you."

"About as well as you'd imagine a nineteen year-old version of Jason being someone's legal guardian would go," Sookie said, rolling her eyes good-naturedly. "Thank goodness this school doesn't, like, make him sign permission slips or anything. He's basically ignoring the whole thing."

"Yeah, that sounds about how I imagined it," Kate noted with an amused smile that was a little more on the gentle side than she probably would've liked. Good thing there weren't any mirrors anywhere nearby.

"It's a really good thing they don't really need our families to do anything while we're here, though."

Dinah was heading for the beach in a bit, but needed glorious caffiene to wake up right now. She grinned when she saw Kate. "Hey! Good to see you're still here. How's your summer going?"

"Dinah!" She got something of a grin right back. "I was a cat for most of last week, so, y'know. It's a normal Fandom summer."

"Awesome. That's always fun." Dinah gestured to a nearby chair. "Mind if I join you for a bit? Or are you deep in the analysis of this week's blush color?"

"Well, Mitchell's going to mock me to death for missing introductions again," Kate said, shaking her head. Then she, too, made a vague gesture in the general direction of the chair. "Sit, sit. This mag is boring me already."

"Cool. Are you TA'ing for him this time? What's he teaching?" Dinah asked, taking a sip of her drink. "And c'mon. You were a cat. Automatic excuse."

"I don't think I'm a TA this time, no." Kate was always so aware of this stuff, really. "And it's, uh, TV for Beginners. So, a totally easy class. And yeah, being a cat is a good excuse, but won't protect me from Mitchell thinking he's hilarious."

"I'm going to miss classes like that," Dinah said semi-mournfully. "And maybe if you get him coffee he'll lay off?" She considered. "Maybe if I get Dr. Horrible coffee, he won't be so weird."

A beat went by. "... We have a teacher called Dr. Horrible?"

"We do!" Dinah couldn't help the bemused expression. "I asked him if that was his legal name, and he told me to mind my own business. He's teaching 'leadership.'" With quote marks, there.

"I see." Not really. "Have I mentioned lately that this school is really fucking weird?"

"Not lately enough," Dinah said, hiding her grin behind her drink. "It's fun to hear it in your tone of total disbelief again."

"Well, I'm glad it's fun for someone," Kate snorted with a friendly eyeroll. "So, you're staying around for the rest of the summer, huh?"

"Yup. I might get another job in-town if I get bored enough. But otherwise, it's TA-ing and helping some friends train, and goofing off." She grimaced. "Last summer of really getting to be silly."

Kate sipped her drink while the other girl spoke. "Mm. You got responsible grown-up plans for when the fun summer ends?"

"Gotham University. Criminal Justice program." Which still amazed her, sometimes, that she got in. "I'm totally looking forward to it, but it scares the crap out of me the closer it gets."

"Yeah well, you'll probably do just fine," Kate said with a quirk of a smile. "And at least you're into it."

"Yeah." Dinah grinned a little giddily at that. "So, you're still going to ballet lessons, right?"

Kate shook her head. "Nah, not right now. Teacher's gone to Paris for the summer."

And whether Kate would bother to continue in the fall remained to be seen.

"Ahh. A break's good. Did I miss anything aside from the insane luggage that followed me home?" Dinah asked. "I'm trying to remember what was going on here this time last year. I think it was that stupid sex pollen. Or whatever it was."

"Well, there was at least this weird, like, character trait flip mindfuck day." Kate made a face at the memory. "Oh, and some of our laundry came alive. But... sex pollen?" That got a raised eyebrow.

"Laundry came alive? Ughh, glad I missed that one." And the mind-messing. She could use a break from that. Dinah blushed a little, remembering last year. "Yeeeah, there was about a week? Yeah, a week, I think. Where everyone was just abnormally-- hormonal. I wasn't seeing anyone right then. I ended up kissing about a handful of people on pure impulse. Other people I guess didn't come out of their rooms with their SO's that week."

Yeah, both brows bounced up, now.

"... Wow. I can't even tell whether I'm glad I missed that or not."

"I took a lot of cold showers," Dinah admitted. "Frustrating, 'cause, no boyfriend. And I had a lot of apologizing to do to Priestly's girlfriend then, because he was one of the ones I kissed."

"But it was the island's fault. I'd hope that would've helped a little." She paused for thought. "Okay, it probably wouldn't help with me, but..."

Dinah had to grin. "It probably helped that I started with 'sorry sorry sorry' and gave her about three bags of candy. And that Priestly had already told her, so it wasn't a surprise. But yeah, I wouldn't be real thrilled with anyone laying her lips on Jaime, even if she did have the island as an excuse."

"Oh that's right, I'd totally forgotten you were seeing my neighbor!" Kate smirked. "How's that going?"

Dinah turned pink, then did a little chair dance of happiness. "Good. Very good. I mean, I'm going to miss him a lot at the end of the summer, but we're just kind of living in the now, 'til then. He just-- he really gets me. You know? And he's awesome. And cute. And did he talk about me?" Eeeek!

Kate just look amused at all of that. "Well, I haven't really seen him much." Too much of her own drama going on, and stuff. "But last time I did, he was missing you pretty bad."

"Awwwww." Dinah sighed, then grinned. "Well. The missing-me over. For now, anyway." Hurriedly she added, "It's weird to be back without so many seniors on the island. I haven't even met any of the last two rounds of new kids yet, I think. Aside from Tim Drake, and he's from Gotham."

"I haven't really met too many, either," Kate shrugged. "Bod took me to the latest newbie picnic, but I don't actually remember much of it, 'cause y'know, cat."

"That'll do it," Dinah sympathized. "The one time I was a cat is all a blur of smelling new things and trying to eat bugs." She took another sip of her drink, and said, "I kind of don't want to get attached to any of them, since I'll be gone so soon. Makes me admire Jen and Reno for being so cool to me when I got here, and especially Reno for coming back to teach."
