J,GOB, Early Thursday evening

Mike had arrived at the causeway half an hour ago with two important tasks to accomplish. The first was to get a cinnamon roll from Jeff, God of Biscuits, since no other chef in the world could make one like Jeff's. The second mission was check on Mary, as he had promised Danny McCoy this morning.

Well, he could kill two birds with one stone. After stashing his bags at the front desk of the hotel, he called Mary and told her to meet him at J,GOB. Nothing like heavenly pastries to get people talking, right?

"Mmm, this is good," said Mike, not waiting for his friend to show up before taking a bite of his roll. "Dude, Jeff, I need to you pack up some of these for me to take home to the wife."

[So very open! Though you may want to specify if you're there before or after the punches get thrown.]

Mary was tired from not sleeping well last night, but she wasn't going to let it show. She had a big smile on her face as she ordered a slice of angelfood cake and an iced tea for herself before going to join her friend.

"Mike! I was so surprised to get your message, but I'm happy to see you," said Mary, hugging Mike back once she set her food down. "Tell me what's new? How is Hawaii?"

Mary sipped her iced tea while she tried to think of a diplomatic way of phrasing her next question. "So your wife is still living in Las Vegas while you're living in Hawaii?" she asked.

"But in the meantime, you're married to a woman living in a different state and a different time zone," Mary pointed out, the disapproval evident in her expression. "Mike, it is really tough to maintain a relationship with that much distance, and you hadn't even planned on marrying this girl in the first place! Are you sure you're doing the right thing?"

"I'm good, just dealing with the usual weirdness around here. You know, stuff like changing into a bird... Did Danny send you?" asked Mary, raising an eyebrow.

"I changed into a bird last week, but I changed back. I know you miss Fandom weirdness like that," said Mary. "And I'm fine. I've just been having some strange dreams, but I can handle them. You don't need to worry about me."

Little did Mary know that there was a second visitor looking for her, one that she probably did not want to see.

Frank Connell had a smug grin on his face when he spotted his daughter. After watching for a while, he approached Mary and her companion. "Hello Mary. I'm disappointed that you didn't notice me when you walked in," he said.

All the color seemed to drain from Mary's face as she realized who she was looking at. "Dad?" she squeaked.

"What can I say? You can't keep a good man down," said Frank, looking very pleased with himself. "Marvelous island, isn't it? Must be nice to live in a place where your loved ones can come back from the dead for a visit."

"You were never a good man," said Mary, her voice a bit shaky. "You were a monster."

"I had some unfinished business to take care of with my little girl," said Frank, reaching out to cover Mary's hand with his own. "It was an opportunity I couldn't pass up."

Mary flinched and pulled her hand away. "You do not get to touch me," she hissed.

The punch caught Frank square in the jaw and he went down. "Nice to see you found another protector for when Danny isn't around," he said to Mary, rubbing his jaw as he laid sprawled on the ground.

Mary crossed her arms over her chest. "I can't help it if people just want to hit you for what you did, Dad," she said, annoyed.

"Don't think that you'll be rid of me that easily," said Frank, getting to his feet. "I'll be staying in town for the next couple of days to take care of that unfinished business. Say, I don't suppose you could give me a family discount on a hotel room, sweetie?"

[identity profile] montecito-east.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Don't push your luck. I keep a loaded gun at the front desk," warned Mary. "You can stay, but don't expect to be anywhere close to my room."

Granted, the gun wasn't loaded and was currently locked up in the hotel safe, but Mary would remedy that just as soon as she got back to the front desk. She was also certain that the barely-finished room in the hotel basement would be perfect for her father.

"Fine, fine," said Frank with a wave of his hand. "I'll leave you two and go get settled in. We'll talk again once you cool off, honey."

And with that, he made a quick exit, just in case Mary's friend tried to hit him again.

"I think so," said Mary, though she didn't look okay. "I may have dreamed about him, but I really didn't want to see him! How long can you stay in town? And can you please stay in my extra bedroom? I think I'm going to need someone else there while he's in the same building."
