James had totally not timed his arrival until the end of her working day. Truly.

"What a shocking turn of events," Helen said in mock surprise. "Who would ever have expected to see you here?"

"I would not have thought I would be back here, but I felt compelled," he said, overacting a bit.

"Oh?" she said arching an eyebrow curiously. "Do tell."

"Like something drew me here. I think it was to tell you that you're almost off-shift and to ask if you were busy after." Innocent. Nonchalant.

Ulterior motives. James had them.

"Ah," Helen said, nodding solemnly. "Some Fandom thing perhaps."

She considered. "After my shift... Hmmm... No, I do believe I'm free as it turns out."

"Well, then, did you fancy a ride?" he asked.

For various definitions of ride.

"Since you seem not to have any plans?"

She pretended to consider again. "A ride... I suppose that would be quite nice."

Any definition of ride would be quite lovely.

"Well, now, should we saddle the horses, or...skip the horses?" he asked.

He delivered it such that if he were in a tavern, there was a good chance of him getting slapped or wearing a drink; Helen might just think it charming or silly.

Oh, she was most amused. "Does that line often work for you?"

"You'll have to tell me after our ride," he said. "First time I've said it." Charmer.

Helen laughed. "Oh you. For that I should make you groom and saddle up all the horses."

"What, ride all of them?" he countered, straight-faced.

In a few decades, he would meet a little man who would remark that it would be difficult to ride a thousand horses. One horse at a time was enough.

She made a face at him. "And then you could unsaddle them all, regroom them and see them safely in their stalls for the night. Just for the practice, you see,"

"Bah," he said, mock-scowling at her. "I suppose I'd have to groom you and stick you in a stall with the rest of them." Worst threat ever?

"I think you've already 'stuck' me in a stall," she said with as straight a face as she could manage.

"Several times, but you still get out and need to be groomed again and stuck again!" he said, still with the fake scowl.

Oh. Oh, that was good. If he wasn't already frowning, he would be laughing.

"And you love it," she purred.

"And you as well," he countered, grinning.

"Now that I'll never deny," she said with an amswering grin.

"Ah, see? I thought you wanted me here to justify your paycheck," he said.

James should get a job. He could check the classifieds for any open Squire positions.

Helen laughed. "If it were that, I'd be discouraging you. I'm paid even if all I do is care for the horses and then lounge about the rest of the day."

"Ah, well, if I'm interrupting your time to lounge, I can come at another time," he said with a grin. Not moving.

She checked the time and shrugged. "I'm all but finished here, I suppose I could always lounge another time."

And smiled at him.

"No, if you've got time blocked to lounge, by all means. I take it I'm too late for a ride?" he asked with a matching shrug.
