JGOB | Early Afternoon | Friday | July 16
Mister and Miss Owens, late of a graveyard in England, were still enjoying the quaint little island their son had found himself on. They even welcomed the heat having been gone for so long that they'd almost forgotten what weather felt like.
It was a nice day. Mister and Miss Owens had taken up residence at a small table outside, foregoing any food in order just to sit and soak up the atmosphere. Bod hadn't arrived yet but he'd said he just needed a shower and he'd be there. There was time and Mister and Miss Owens were fine with waiting.
They were patient. They weren't talking with each other though Miss Owens had her hand over Misters Owens' own hand, loose and comfortable. Any other time, Mister Owens might act like he didn't want it there (even if he did) but he welcomed it now.
The day was nice. They weren't alive but they were closer than they had been in years. It was amazing.
[Bod's [going] to be here for his parents and the giiiiiiiirl but JGOB is an open place in time that can be used for other things!]

And what if they didn't like her? God, why couldn't ground just swallow her whole?
Once she got to JGOB, and had quickly scanned the outside area, she stopped. It wasn't that she didn't see the Owenses, it was just that she expected Bod to be with them, and so that couple there couldn't be them, because Bod wouldn't send her into this situation on her own. Right?
So... She kind of just stood there, looking around. In her sensible yet cute blouse with the bow, and the vest and-- okay, the skirt was kind of short, but she'd coupled it with some thick black tights, and was hoping that all in all, she was giving off a respectable vibe.
While standing there, all awkward. Yeah.

When she didn't move, Miss Owens finally said, "Are you all right, dear? You almost look like you've seen a ghost."
At that, Mister Owens chuckled.
Unfortunately for Kate, while Bod had told his parents about her, he didn't describe her and he didn't have pictures so she was going have to be awkward for a little bit longer.

"Uh, no, I'm fine, thank you," she said with a quick, slightly distracted smile. "Just supposed to meet up with my..." She glanced around again. "...Boyfriend. And his, um, his parents."
no subject
"Bod's not arrived yet but he'll be along shortly," she said, wandering over to the girl. "Hullo, dear. I'm Miss Owens, Bod's mother. And that disrespectful oaf is Mister Owens. Bod's told us about you!"
Good things, Kate, all good things. Miss Owens smiled at her. "Would you like to sit with us? Of course you would!"

For a second there, Kate did a spectacular impression of a deer in headlights. She shook it off quickly though, replacing the expression with a smile that left something to be desired as far as looking natural went.
It was the best she could do under the circumstances.
"Oh, um, hello Miss Owens," she said, offering Bod's mother her hand. "I... guess I would, yea-- Yes."
no subject
She took her seat again and nodded at one of the other empty seats. "I think Bod's gotten a little relaxed in his manners now that he's been gone for awhile."
Mister Owens snorted. "He only uses those manners when people are looking."
"Well, nonetheless," Miss Owens said, clasping her hands on the table in front of her, "he's still late. And you are nothing like I expected."
no subject
Her head tilted a bit, she asked, "I'm not?"
Really surprising. Really. Because of course Bod would tell them to expect a nervous wreck in modest clothes, trying desperately to act like a grown-up.

"Expectations are hard to come by when we're just as surprised as you are to be here," Mister Owens interjected, resting his chin in his hands. "This is new to us as well."
"We're really just very pleased to see him," Miss Owens continued, nodding. "And it's very good to hear he's found himself a little place with friends here. Here's to hoping those friends are a little better than the one he had back home."
There was something unspoken there and both of his parents fixed their eyes on Kate. That probably wasn't helping with the discomfort but they were protective.

This was different. Way, way different. No one had given her looks like that there, for one thing.
But on the other hand, she knew exactly what to say here. She had no intention to hurt him like that, or to leave him pretty much traumatized and thinking he was something he most definitely wasn't. But saying that aloud might have been a little rude, so she let it all just be reflected in the tone she chose.
"They are," she said. "And I am nothing like Scarlett."
And saying that, she felt just the tiniest bit more like herself.

Miss Owens just hoped he could. Carrying around those regrets just got tiring and painful after too long. "What are are you like, Kate? Bod spent plenty of time talking about you but he's not you and we'd like to hear from you."
Mister Owens leaned back in his chair, relaxed and still appraising the girl across from them. He added, "And if you do know the name of that girl, it's a good assumption that you know a little more about him than most so be honest, now."
no subject
"Well, I'm... from Overland Park in Kansas," she started, though that didn't really answer the question and she knew it. "Kind of a city girl, although I've been here for a year now. And, um, I guess I'm kind of smart?"
That sounded like a question. It wasn't supposed to sound like a question.
Someone should just kill her. Kill her now.

Mister Owens didn't smile though his eyes looked amused. Imagine that, two old ghosts were able to intimidate a young girl. It had to be the parent thing, he decided, and not the ghost thing.
"And you're his girlfriend?" his father asked, half smiling now. "For how long?"
Before Kate could answer, Miss Owens added, "And how did that come about, dear? Bod was a little hazy on the details."
no subject
But right. Questions.
"Oh, we've been dating for..." She had to do some quick math in her head. "For almost a month and a half now. But we've known each other since, like, January." She tried that smile on for size again. "It was a little slow."
And a whole lot complicated, but if she could get away with not saying anything about that, she would.
