The woods, Saturday, sunset

For the past two days the medium-sized stone had lain, unnoticed and unremarked, on the ground in the woods. Dormant. Waiting. Now it slowly came to life, the remnants of the ancient writing flaring to life as the last rays of the setting sun touched it.

It sent out the call, reaching out to those it had brought through, gathering them back, a benign sheep dog with its strayed flock. The call was gentle and calm, but it was implacable.

It was time to go.

The mist spread out through the trees, gateway to elsewheres, filling the woods with a soft light.

[Post is up early in case of time zone issues! There’s enough light in the woods that everyone can see clearly, cause we don’t want any broken ankles. Again, OCD is totally optional; goodbyes can take place anywhere, departure can be handwaved.]

It had only been two days, but that was two more than either of them could have hoped for. He had said his good-byes to Zack, and knew his protege was safe.

Now it was time for Angeal to go into the woods and return to the Lifestream.

"Never forget your honor," he said, simply. "It's a terrible thing to lose."

(posted muy early -- zack will tag in when the mun returns from vacay!)

"I've managed to hold on to it this long," Zack pointed out, pretty much hell-bent to keep a smile on his face right now. He'd be upset later. Now wasn't the time. "You... You're really okay?"

No, Zack. He was dead.

Right.

"I mean... This is how it has to be, huh?"

That didn't strike him as quite right, either. But he'd let it sit as that, for now.

It had felt too short. Way too short. There were a hundred more things to say, or not say.

It just felt too soon. He didn't feel more ready for this than he'd felt for the funeral. This time it would be permanent, not that for one second he'd thought it hadn't been permanent before. He was lucky to be given this chance and it hardly seemed fair that he was standing here instead of Gracia and Elysia. As if he'd taken their husband and father away from them a second time.

"Stop it," Hughes wasn't looking at Roy as they made their ways through the trees. He wasn't entirely sure where he was going, but somehow he seemed to know the way unconsciously.

Sookie had thought ahead, after how Gran's arrival had gone; she figured that the departure would be very similar. As a precautionary measure, she had brought along tissues in her pockets.

"Do you want me to tell Jason anything?" she asked softly.

Isabel had known from the beginning that Alex had only a short time in Fandom, but she couldn't help wishing for just another day as they walked back into the woods.

She should probably say something. Except she didn't have a clue where to start.

"I don't want you to go," Ned said, sounding very much like the little boy he'd been when she'd last seen him. "I want more time."

Padmé turned to look at her family and give them a small, sad smile. "It's time."

This was the one thing that he hadn't looked forward to when the deal for spending time with his loved ones had been presented to him.

The leaving and goodbyes.

Savannah was back at her hotel room, being tended to by her fiance. His daughter had broken down at the end of their talk and his having to leave didn't help matters any. So he said goodbye to her there. It would have been too cruel to have asked her to come to the woods and watch him leave, but he knew that she would do it if she asked. He also knew without a doubt that if he had tried to ask, that fiance of hers would have had some words to say.

So now, he was here with just his oldest son and the woman he loved more than anything in the world.

Two days to gain her mother's and brother's approval wasn't enough to heal the wounds of the last seven years, but Aravis took it.

"You could just come back with me," she offered, trying not to sound like she was begging. "Mother, you could ride. Rishti and I could walk. It's only a day's distance."

Dinah was in between both her parents, clutching their hands with tight fingers. Still talking, trying to put this off to the last second. Pretending they were only going away on a trip.

"So, visiting Momoko in Tokyo, maybe, and Priestly in Santa Cruz again, and El Paso, of course. And Tony, if he's in New York or in Vancouver, whichever... lots of stuff to do before I leave for Gotham U." She swallowed hard. "And who knows? Maybe visiting some of the others, on weekends, later."

After any other goodbyes that needed to be said, Anakin made the last walk back into the woods with Tahiri. It could almost have been like one of their exploratory treks back on Yavin Four, if they let themselves think it, but neither of them did.

It was an unusually silent walk, for the most part, Tahiri occasionally pointing out some spot or other that held memories that would have interested him, until they reached the spot where the stone had been.

"This is it, I guess," Anakin said, turning to her.

They'd been messing about with an old engine, Rafe talking up a storm while Marcus worked, when he'd suddenly gone quiet. Marcus had looked up to find Rafe staring off into the distance. "It's time to go." Without a word, Marcus had wiped his hands and they'd left, Marcus falling into step beside his brother as they returned to the woods.

And now they were here.

Marcus stopped at the edge of the light, watching his brother silently. Even if he'd been one for words, he wouldn't have had them now.

Ted was ready to leave. Almost. Except for that damn mist again.

"I swear if Dr. Fate or the Phantom Stranger shows up I'm going to lecture them on this whole damn mist thing," he declared. "Can't we have just a nice sunny day without the whole mysteriousness of it all?"

"No," Alice said firmly. "I refuse. I categorically refuse. This is ridiculous. They can't make you go back. There are portals. Tillie, don't you want to see the world? There's so much world out there. You could come to Wonderland. Or Arrakis. Leto would love to have you with us. Don't you want to stay?"

Matilda Tillie Eaglet Edith Tertia she couldn't leave. She couldn't. Alice had no intention of being rational about this.

"I ..." Rikku hugged her arms. "I wish you could stay."

This was perhaps the stupidest thing she could have said. Apparently it was Theater of the Obvious today. Like her mom didn't know that. She --

She was going to stop beating herself up about finding the right words and just hug her mother. Susu would understand.

Scully stopped before they got close to the gate. "Are you happy there?" she demanded. "Is it-- are you with Dad?" She swallowed. "And Emily?"

The closet, seriously. Squall was going to lock her away somewhere so she couldn't leave him ever ever again, because when she did he'd be alone again...

Except here they were, walking into the woods.

He grabbed his mother's wrist tightly. "What happens if you don't go through the gate?" he asked.

Rinoa was not going to fall all over herself, crying. Probably.

She was mostly probably not going to. More or less.

"Thank you for being here," she managed.

She couldn't believe it had only been two days. Everything had changed, and now ... it was supposed to go back to how it had been?

Elena wasn't sure that was possible.

She waited, uncertainly, with her sister and her mother. Both of whom were dead. One of whom was going back to be dead again, tonight.

Elena didn't know if this island was kind, cruel, or both.

Tim and his father had said their goodbyes at the edge of the preserve. He had talked to his former wife and given his blessing for her nuptuals. And most importantly he had gotten to tell Tim how much he loved him, and how proud he was of him.

After the past few days, he felt much more energized for the inevitable heroic quest the others in Tir Na Nog would want him to undertake.
