Luke's Diner [Tuesday, September 14th]

When Sookie came into work today, she was more than a little confused at the...green additions. Sure, it was all eco-friendly and stuff, and hydroponics were very popular these days (even in legitimate circles!) She was just a little surprised at the suddenness.

Though, really, she was more impressed at how Lacey had managed to get those wall planters and hanging tomato thingies in so fast. And secretly hoped this didn't mean she couldn't still make really unhealthy food. She was pretty sure even the lure of sparkling personality wouldn't be enough for her friends and boyfriend to visit her at work if there weren't burgers and pie involved.

Today's Specials
Goat Cheese Souffle with Thyme
Butternut Squash Chowder with Pears and Ginger

Luke's was open, if health-conscious.

"You mustn't tell Susan I was here two days in a row," Rilla hissed as she slid into a seat.

"Well, not entirely," Rilla said, "but I made the acquaintance the owner of this establishment yesterday and Susan has views about the importance of home-cooked food."

"I won't then," Rilla said with a little grin. "What's good today?"

"Souffle is French, right?" Rilla asked. "I had Italian yesterday," she added proudly.

"Susan doesn't much hold to foreign cookery," Rilla said diplomatically.

Rilla nodded. "That's mostly kept in Quebec," she said, "though we do have a few French laborers who help bring in the harvests. I'm learning French, and Walter just adores the country. He wants to see Paris some day."

"The Tower and the art and the history, and oh, it sounds lovely," Rilla sighed. "I will be terribly disappointed if Walter doesn't invite me along."

"But then I'd have to touch a frog," Rilla said, wrinkling her nose up. "Maybe I could get Carl to do it for me!"

"No, I draw the line at frogs," Rilla said. "Carl was always bringing over bugs and spiders and tiny creatures for me to see. Frogs and I are not friends."

Rilla stared at her with wide hazel eyes. "We can vote?"

Rilla shook her head. "We can't vote at home. Well, I'm fourteen, I couldn't vote in any case, but it's only for men."

Rilla clasped her hands together in delight. "Truly?"

"What a wonderful responsibility!" Rilla squealed, perhaps taking her vote in a student council race a tad seriously.
