Pixie Dust; Tuesday [ 09/28 ].

Ariel was never too good with patience, and today was testing that terribly. It was Tuesday! The casting for the play would be out! And here she was, stuck at work, which was going to just seem like hours.

Well, it was hours, but they seemed to be going a seaslug's pace.

She found herself rearranging the same dresses at least three times and couldn't even get past the table of contents in the fashion magazines without drifting off and daydreaming. Which only confirmed to Ariel that, yes, she was better off just leaving a little early today than trying to stick it through.

She's love the distraction, you have no idea.

"Ariel!" Christian bounded in. "Did you see the play casting yet?"

Of course, he'd gotten a lead and she had gotten ... whatever a Trekky was. But they'd both made it! That was the important thing, wasn't it?

"No, no, not yet!" Ariel said, immediately clinging her attention onto that and Christian's own mood at the moment and trying not to dissect what that might mean. "I was going to check it out as soon as I got out of work! Did you see them yet? Are you going to tell me? You should. No! No, don't! Don't tell me! I want to see for myse-- But I don't know if I can wait! Ohmygosh, I just don't know!"

"I just came from the theater, and I got -" Christian said, and stopped. "I'm confused. Do you want to know about me and not about you, or about both of us, or about nothing? I hardly want to spoil it if you're just waiting until you can look yourself."

"I don't know!" Ariel admitted with a laugh, and then tried to shake her head as if to shake out all the nervous little excited jitters inside. She took a deep breath.

"Okay, okay. You tell me who you got so we can celebrate that, and, while I'm dying to know what I got, I want to see it with my on eyes, so we won't tell me that, unless it's absolutely on accident, in which case, that's okay too! But I want to know how you did!"

"I won't tell you how you did," Christian promised. Taffy -- or whatever it was -- seemed easy enough to talk around. "But as for me --"

And here he had to sweep a deep bow. "Prince Charming, at your service."

"Ah!" Ariel's exclamation took on a squealing, excited tone, her face instantly brightening at the news. "I knew it! I mean, who else could you be?"

She laughed, her cheeks turning a little red as she now felt even more hopeful that she might score the title role if Christian was to be the handsome prince in the story. "That's so great, Christian, you'll be perfect for it!"

"I hope I will be!" Christian said, brandishing the script. He hadn't actually read it yet, and he might not be quite so happy once he did. "Thank you. I didn't quite see myself as the witch, but the lead is more than I'd hoped for. I wasn't sure my audition impressed Mr. Rhapsodos."

"I would have liked to have seen that," Ariel admitted with a giggle, "you as the witch!" Despite herself, there was another little bounce. Maybe she'd gotten the witchy part! That would have been a fun part to have, too, she had to admit, and her excitement to see the list started to grow again. "But what makes you think he wouldn't have liked your audition? Obviously, you didn't do too bad, and I just can't imagine it going poorly..."

"With a cat for a familiar and a wart on my nose, do you think?" Christian asked, probably earning the enmity of everyone in the Magic Reserves.

He turned shy at her question, shrugging. "He told me it was too obvious I wasn't comfortable with the content. There was an awful lot of improper language."

Ariel grinned a bit, picturing that wart right there on the tip of Christian's nose and she was about to tease him and point the imaginary blemish out, but then she found herself snorting at the rest of what he said.

"Oh, that. Mine had...well, one of those, so that wasn't so bad, but yours had more? Do you think the play will have a lot of it, too?"

"I haven't the faintest," Christian said, squinting down at the typed pages in his hand. "We could find out together, couldn't we? But -- it's Snow White. That's for children!"

"Find out together?" asked Ariel, who decided children were the slightly less interesting part of this conversation now. "You mean, rehearse together and everything?"

Christian's eyes went wide. He had meant to look through the pages together then, but if she was going to ask...

"If you like!" he said. "Extra rehearsals could never hurt."

And, really, how much did it matter if Trekkie ever talked to the Prince?

Hey, go big or go home, right?

"Exactly!" Ariel said eagerly. "It'll be good to bounce ideas off of each other, too. It'd be fun...."

"Ariel," Jenny called as she let herself into the shop. "Ariel, we need to have a wee chat."

"Hey, Jenny," Ariel, glad for a distraction, bounced out from around the counter to meet her boss. "Sure, what's up?"

"Ariel, look," Jenny said with a sigh, "this is a store. We sell things. For money. Maybe not very seriously, but we do." She produced the stack of IOUs from her pocket. "You can't just give people things in hopes they'll pay you later. Now I have to find this--" she consulted the IOUs again "--'William Murdoch' and shake him until money falls out, because you've taken out the intermediary of the credit card companies and made it my problem."

It took Ariel a moment to know what Jenny was talking about, but the moment she pulled out the IOU's, her eyes went wide and things clicked into place.

"Oh, but it's William, he'll pay, I know he will! He's a very upstanding gentleman, and do you want me to talk to him tomorrow? I can remind him, and I'm sure he'll pay right away, it probably just got shoved to the back of his mind for the moment."

God save her from naive teenagers. "You can't just--" Jenny sighed again, not willing to break the whole 'just because people seem nice doesn't mean they're going to give me my money in a timely fashion,' thing to Ariel and deal with that. "No, look, it just doesn't work that way. They give us money, and then we give them stuff. Not the other way around, and certainly not 'whenever it unslips his mind.' I'll take care of it, it's my job as manager, but just...for future reference. Money, then goods. It's capitalism."

Which...made sense, sure, but...

"But they looked so good on him! I just couldn't say no! He apparently really needed those clothes!"

But note, Ariel, how you still hadn't actually seen him in them yet...

..yeah, she was totally going to lose this one.

"Was he naked?" Jenny wanted to know. She seriously doubted it, though, as she would have noticed a naked person roaming the halls.

"Well," Ariel reasoned, telling herself that she was making an argument here, not at all just bringing up thoughts of a naked William, "he would have been between taking off his old clothes and trying on the new ones..."

"So he had clothes," Jenny concluded. "So it wasn't a clothing emergency where he didn't even have somewhere to keep money."

"Er, no," Ariel had to admit.

"Okay, okay!" she said, disparagingly. "No more clothes unless they can pay, I got it, I got it."

"Okay," Jenny said, slightly disconcerted by having to actually be managerial. "Other than that...keep up the good work."

See, it wasn't so bad giving into Jenny. Jenny couldn't ground her. She smiled at the compliment. "Hey, thanks! Oh, and do you think we're going to get in any more of those really cute pink tops? The ones with the ribbons? I really liked those."

Well, there was no accounting for taste. "I don't know," she said, honestly. "Things just sort of show up."

"Oh," said Ariel, who nodded, and seemed to accept that pretty easily. "Well, I hope so. Or maybe a dress like them, that'd be really cute, too."

I need coffee...
