Stark Indu- errr, Fixer-Uppers [Wednesday]

Good Lord, that sign was... attention-grabbing. It was about the kindest thing William could think of to describe it, really.

Thanks to several hours spent learning to navigate YouTube and finding a helpful tutorial on the matter, he'd managed to replace the battery on Miss Darlington's iPod over the weekend, but that didn't mean he was out of things to keep himself busy. Today, his attention was divided between taking notes on the case he was working on for Mr. Holmes, and taking apart the flash drive he'd been given. He was disappointed to see the latter had even fewer moving parts than the iPod had.

[around for a couple hours in the morning, and then back after work chews me up & spits me out around 6 Pacific.]

"I'm pretty sure you're supposed to stick that into a computer, not take it apart," came a voice from the entrance, amused as it was. "Unless it's broken, but in that case, you're not doing it any favours."

"You could've used the net for that." Not that there was any judgment in Ender's voice. He approached the desk to get a better look. "So what have you learned?"

"Circuit board," Ender agreed, and pressed his hands on the desk, glancing down at William's work. "It's the difference between what we call 'mechanical' and 'digital' technology."

"There's a method to it," Ender replied. "All the little transponders you see, and those little pathways..." he pointed at them. "I could probably find you one of those big practice boards to get the hang of it."

"I'll rustle one up for you in the store by Monday," he promised, "And a book or two. It's in everyone best interest to get you trained up quickly, and I doubt Rikku would disagree."

"Understandable."

At which point Ender might have pulled up a chair. "So how're you settling in, William?"

"I think any form of advanced science could come across as magic towards people who don't understand it," Ender answered, "Though I also accept about half our student base refers to their abilities as just that."

Ender's mouth twitched. "Whimsy," he said.

He let that word lie there for a second. "There's machinery underneath this island, William. It keeps us caught between one dimension and the next. Occasionally it likes to let something seep through. It all comes down to the basic law of whimsy; as soon as you accept that as a scientific fact, everything else will seem a lot easier. Cause and affect are still at work here."

"Yes," Ender said, "And no, barring an emergency, you probably won't get a look at it."

"Just don't get caught trying to sneak into the catacombs," was Ender's only advice. "They hate that."
