Dite's Decadent Delights, Monday Afternoon

After talking to Tim last week about the difference between Blood chess and the chess people played in this world, Karla really wanted to play a game of proper chess. But that wasn't among the games and things she'd brought, and a search on the internet had revealed there wasn't even anything close to resembling Blood chess in this world.

That was fine. Karla was nothing if not determined. Which is why she was armed with a sketchbook and several boxes of molding kits today during her shift at 'Dite's. The plan was elegant in its simplicity: she would cast her own chess set. Her drawing skills were passable enough for her to sketch the different pieces she'd need for a game of Blood chess, but making the molds was harder than she'd thought.

Come in! Just don't mind the cursing and the discarded 'Clone A Willy' boxes everywhere.

She's ready to listen, even if she's busy.

Sookie had sworn up and down that she wouldn't go back in this shop except under duress. However, there were pressing needs at hand.

...not like that.

After going through the lengthy process of depositing her check at the bank (apparently they needed multiple forms of ID and a few dozen signatures when you were depositing fifty grand. Who knew?) and a trip to the mainland to look at computers, Sookie stopped by Dite's to see Karla. Because really, if she was going to buy her an island, she should find out which archipelago Karla found the most interesting.

As she wandered in and saw the discarded boxes, though, Sookie considered just...sneaking back out again. "...busy day?" she asked instead, gingerly picking up one of the boxes.

"Sookie!" Karla looked up from where she was once again attempting to make a mold in the shape of a Healer. "Hee, this is an unexpected visit."

What, she knew Sookie's opinion of her workplace.

She glanced down at the boxes Sookie was holding. "I'm trying to make pieces for Blood chess," she explained with a chuckle. "The boxes said the could make a mold of...well, I figured it would be too hard to make molds of the pieces I need for my version."

You could even get them in two handy colors, one for each side!

"...I think I was wrong about how difficult it would be, though."

"That's so much less dirty than what I thought you might be up to," Sookie sighed gratefully. "I didn't even know this kind of thing existed. I should come by more often. It's...educational."

"Sookie!" Karla said, trying not to fall over laughing. "What in the name of the Darkness did you think I was--no, I can guess. But why?!"

Sookie blushed to the roots of her hair. "Getting around the whole Virgin Night thing," she said, waving the box at her. "It'd be pretty creative!"

Karla was just going to put her face down on the counter and snicker for a little while. She shook head a bit. "Just...art project," she assured Sookie from the nest of her arms. "Promise."

"That's reassuring," she said, still blushing. "I mean, this is an awfully public place for the, um, kind of art project I initially thought. So how are you?" Sookie continued cheerfully, totally just moving on from that. "Good weekend?"

"Morton grilled me about Warren," Karla sighed. "But he didn't try to go be intimidating at him, so I'm counting it as a win. And since Uncle Saetan wasn't here, I don't think anyone went to interrogate my teachers. So, overall, yeah, a success. How about you?"

She gave Sookie a slightly guilty look. She might have obliquely threatened the vampire Queen of Louisiana over Sookie, something she was pretty sure her friend would disapprove of if she knew. "Pam and Eric behave?"

"Oddly enough, yes," she said, tilting her head thoughtfully. "Jessica -- y'know, the gal I do radio with and all? Bill visited her. Her version. He was sweet to me, though. And -- shockingly -- Pam behaved herself, and Eric actually gave me a present, which is why I came to visit you today. I mean, other than your delightful company."

Karla's eyes narrowed at the idea of Eric giving Sookie a gift, but she kept her tone light. Sookie knew to check for strings, right?

"I knew there had to be a dire reason for you to come visit me at work," she teased. "I'm going to want to talk about Bill and--Jessica you said?--in a second, but I have to admit to being curious about why a present from Eric was enough to get you through the doors."

"He paid me for Dallas," Sookie said with a bright smile, leaning a bit. "Finally. And since you were injured in the line of him hiring me for that particular trip, I figured I'd let you know that I'll either be cutting you a check, or buying you a present. Bobby's getting something, too, incidentally."

"I didn't go with you because I expected to get paid!" Karla objected. "You earned that money. Do something fun with it! Use it to buy an amazing homecoming dress or something."

Karla was grossly underestimating the size of the check.

"Honey." Sookie shook her head, beaming. "I'm going to college on like, half that money. Believe me, I can afford to treat you a bit."

"I'm glad you won't have to dance to put yourself through college," Karla said, earnestly. Her only idea about how much college cost was a conversation with Dinah about strippers, months and months ago.

"I won't accept a check," she decided. "I just won't. A gift is one thing; we're friends and friends surprise each other with presents. But not money. That feels too mercenary for something I did out of friendship."

"Eh, I wasn't expecting you to take a check," Sookie replied, though she peered at Karla for the dancing remark. "And I...wasn't really planning on going to go to college before this, though, so dancing wasn't a huge concern of mine. But as a seventeen year-old who recently came into fifty thousand dollars, I'm pretty sure college is the natural answer. Bobby thinks I should invest it, though."

"What?" Karla said, catching the look. "Dinah told me that's how females in this world paid for college if they couldn't afford it. They dance on poles."

Dinah hadn't quite put it like that, but Karla sometimes understood things...oddly. "You know, if you weren't going to go to college because you couldn't afford it and didn't want to dance, I would have helped."

Just in case there was ever a question.

"But Bobby's right. If I had access to my man of business, I'd give you some suggestions, but I doubt his investment tips will do you much good." She frowned a bit. "I wish I could check to see how my investments were doing."

"Oh, sweetie, I know, but I wouldn't feel right taking anyone's money. Unless I was doing something for you or your Court at the same time, anyway. At least I don't feel bad about taking Eric's money, considering what he put us through," Sookie assured her. "As far as investment goes, though, Bobby wants me to talk to his version of Warren. Apparently the boy's pretty money-savvy. Go figure."

"Hmph." Karla still wasn't entirely sure how she felt about Bobby's Warren. Passionately kissing wasn't a way Karla was used to making someone's acquaintance. "You might want to ask this Warren, too?" she suggested. "He may have some ideas, too. And it hardly hurts to get a lot of opinions."

She nodded thoughtfully, biting her lower lip. "You don't think he'd mind, d'you?"

"Asking for advice? I don't think so," Karla said, shaking her head a little. "I mean, you're not asking him to take charge of it and set up some kind of trust. Just seeing if he has any ideas."

If anything, Karla thought he would feel rather flattered. Or, at least, she hoped so.

"I've got an accountant, already," she said with a little grin. "I just need to know what's a good thing to invest in, or I'll end up getting something with my initials or birthday or like SSBD or something as their...little stock market initial just 'cause I don't know better. Warren -- either of 'em -- should be able to point me towards sound investments."

"Emma will want a say, too. You know she loves this stuff," Karla reminded, fiddling with another failed mold. "So, you're investing most of it, and keeping a bit of it for college, you said? But you'll keep a little but for fun, won't you?"

She nudged Sookie and winked. "You should take me out for drinks sometime. Or you can treat me, Bobby, and Warren out for dinner. That would work, right?"

"Emma'll try and get me to invest a lot of it in expensive, lovely things," Sookie teased. "And yeah, I can do that. I can take you and Emma for a girls' night, or we could do a double date on me. Seriously, college'll run me...thirty grand-ish, at a state school. I've got twenty thousand more on top of that. I barely know what to do with it. Treating my friends right seems like a good start."

"Remind her than while shoes may count as a good investment, you're looking for ones that lead to more money down the road," Karla teased. With a final sour look at her mold, she tossed the last bit away. This so wasn't working, damn it all.

"And, if it will make you feel better, you can treat us to a girls' night and a double date," she continued, magnanimous to the core.

"I think I can swing both," Sookie decided, giggling. "We deserve to have some fun, damn it. I'll even take y'all somewhere nice, if you want!"

Because that was an amazing idea. Not that either of those two groups wouldn't be able to behave themselves -- Sookie's hick tendencies and Bobby's sugar packet-projectiles aside.

"After this weekend?" Karla said, laughing. "A break might be nice for all of us."

Hopefully, Sookie would remember to balance her plan of 'somewhere nice' with a memory of how much Bobby and Karla could put away. It would be sad to blow through all her fun money at once.

"I hope Morton didn't leave Warren too damaged," she said with a little smile. "That's always been my worry about Jason, you know, getting over himself and actually meeting Bobby."

She's kind of busy trying to get this to work.
