Pixie Dust; Tuesday [ 10/19 ].

Ariel could not have been more pleased to wake up back to normal again this morning, which set her off for an excellent, energetic mood. Sure, it would have been kind of fun to tackle the alternative she had in mind for if this stuck around through homecoming, but this was definitely preferable. And now she had the energy to take care of what needed to be done within the next few days: make sure that William asked Rilla to the dance if he hadn't already, and, if Bruce didn't ask her, to ask him herself, but she was confident in the fact that she'd have another back-up plan if nothing happened by Thursday.

And, in the meantime, Ariel was working. Absolutely working. Sure, it looked like she was just taking dresses and seeing how they might look on her in the mirror, but, actually, she was just making sure she really knew the products available so she could be all the more helpful if anyone came in looking for a dress today.

Really!

Because you know Ariel is going to suggest pink...

Hopefully, she'll have better luck finding you a dress (or a suit!) than she's having picking out one for herself! There were just so many!

Bruce didn't need another suit. The only thing he needed less than that was another dead parent. ~~Yeah, I went there.~~ But he did need a date for Saturday, and the most appropriate person to ask was here today. "Ariel," he said as he approached the counter. "How are you today?"

[Just pinging in while on lunch. He will ask tonight!]

"Bruce!" Ariel met him with a smile. "Hi! Tell me, which do you like better, green, or blue?"

She was convinced he was going to be the one having to look at it, after all.

But she'd still probably wind up with pink.

"Blue," Bruce said. "But if you're asking so you can help me shop, I should warn you that I wasn't looking to buy anything today."

[Still at work for a while so I'll be slow.]

"Not looking to buy anything today?" asked Ariel, leaning on the counter with her chin cradled in her hand and a grin on her face. "Now, what would you be doing in a clothing store, then, if you weren't looking to buy anything today, Bruce?"

"Based on that smile, I think you have some idea," Bruce said. "Are you busy on Saturday?"

While it was a little disappointing that she wouldn't get to ask him herself, or force Jono to go with her, or go with Rilla in defiance of need bo--

--actually, no, not that disappointing at all.

"Well, you know, I think there's this homecoming thing, or something..."

"I figured you had heard about that," Bruce said. "Would you like to go with me?"

"That's a silly question," Ariel said with a giggle. "Of course I would!"

"I admit, I figured it was just a formality," Bruce said.

Oh, did he, now? That was an interesting little tidbit that put a sparkle in her eye.

"That says a lot for formalities, then," she said, "because I might have gone with one of my back-up plans if you didn't..."

Not that she was fishing for an idea of what other sort of formalities might be overlooked that could use a bit of recognition, or anything...

"Back up plans," Bruce repeated. "So I was Plan A, like I figured."

He was deducing things again.

Well, he was very good at deducing them, yes.

"And Plan B, too," Ariel offered him with a smirk. "You had about twenty four hours before I tracked you down myself."

And she would. Oh, yes. She would.

"I figured I should wait until everyone was the right gender again," Bruce said, making note of her... enthusiasm

"Probably a good idea," Ariel agreed, "especially since if the swap stuck around until Saturday, it would call for an entirely different plan all together."

She had, if anything, been very thorough in her consideration of the event for someone who'd only just remembered about it yesterday.

"That would have made me stay away from the dance," Bruce said.

"Well, that wouldn't be any fun!" Ariel objected with a laugh.

"Under no circumstances am I going to buy myself a dress," Bruce said. "So I would have had to skip it."

"You wouldn't have to wear a dress," Ariel pointed out. "I wasn't going to."

"You weren't?" Bruce asked. "I find that a little surprising."

"Well, not if I'd have stayed a boy, no," Ariel grinned. "But now I'm totally going to."

"It'll look better on you like this anyway," Bruce mused. "Not to mention the relative comfort."

Ariel's head bobbed in a nod. "A lot more fun, too, although I'd have worked a suit if I had to."

"Have you ever worn a suit?" Bruce asked out of idle curiosity.

"...not really, no," Ariel said with a shrug. "But I was ready to come in today and find one if I had to."

"For the record, I think you'd look good in one," Bruce said. "But I'd still prefer a dress for you."

Just so that she didn't get any wrong ideas there.

"Of course I would," Ariel said, preening and proving that confidence was definitely never anything she was lacking, "but I'm glad to hear you say that, because I'd prefer me in one, too. And you in a suit, so we're on the same page there, too."

"I have an ungodly number of suits," Bruce said. "The least I can do is wear one when it's appropriate."

"Why would you need so many suits?" asked Ariel.

Who had a drawer full of forks, so, clearly, this was just an attempt to seem interested and make conversation.

"Because sometimes they're necessary," Bruce said. "I should point out that Alfred has a different tuxedo for each day of the week. That may explain something."

"That does put things into perspective a little," Ariel chuckled a bit at that, and shook her head. "Clothes aren't nearly such a thing back home, so I'm glad I'm here where it can be."

"That explains why you seem to enjoy working here so much," Bruce mused.

"The discount helps, too," Ariel pointed out, and shrugged a little again. "And, really, I only got this job at first because I didn't have any money. That's not much of a thing back home, either, but it's worked out really well!"

Even if she had only narrowly avoided being fired every once in a while.

"So your home isn't very concerned with clothes or money?" Bruce asked. "Your world is extremely different from mine."

"You have no idea," said Ariel, shaking her head a little with a smirk. She knew she wasn't about to say anything more than that if she could help it, either. "I like it here, though; I'm glad I got to stay."

"So am I. If you didn't, I would be going to Homecoming alone," Bruce said.

Okay, that was clearly not true, but it was something of a gesture in word form.

"Oh, please," said Ariel, snorting a bit to get her bangs to fluff up a bit (she'd missed that these last few days). "You wouldn't be going to homecoming alone; you just wouldn't be going with as good of a date."

"Possibly. I guess we'll never know for sure," Bruce said.

No, Ariel was right.

I think I may make more coffee, yeeeees.
