The Perk - Saturday morning

It felt nice to be somewhere where he didn't have to be disguised or fearful that somebody was going to try to attempt or kill him. Zayne kind of missed that. If clearing his name and exposing a conspiracy within the Jedi Order weren't more important than living a peaceful life, he could convince himself to move here permanently.

Unfortunately, those things were more important, so he was drinking some coffee while waiting for Anakin to show up and hopefully give him a history lesson.

[OOC: Zayne is mostly here for Anakin, but both he and the Perk are available for other business!]

"Hello, Zayne," Anakin said, walking in a few moments later. "I hope I haven't been keeping you waiting."

"Not too long," Zayne said. "And it's actually nice to have a quiet time just to myself at that point. It hasn't happened too often recently."

"What's been happening?" Anakin asked, quickly placing an order for a black coffee.

"Have you ever heard about the Padawan Massacre on Taris?" Zayne asked.

Anakin hissed in a breath. "No," he said. "How many did you lose? And to who?"

"Four. The rest of my class," Zayne said. "Our Masters killed them. When I escaped, they said I did it."

Anakin's jaw dropped. "They what?"

"They're seers. All of them except for my former Master, Lucien," Zayne explained. "They had a vision they interpreted as one of us turning to the Dark Side, collapsing the Order, and destroying the Republic. Then they decided to stop that vision from coming true."

"Because one of you might turn to the Dark Side, they decided to murder all of you?"

Anakin got a little screechy when he was outraged.

"How did you survive?"

"Well, tardiness and luck got me out of the Jedi Tower," Zayne said. "A good conman I had just arrested helped me survive from there. "

"There sounds like a story in there," Anakin replied. "Up for talking about it yet?"

"Part of my Trials included capturing a Snivvian, Marn Hierogryph," Zayne said. "It took me a month. It was the night of the commencement ceremony when everything happened. I left him locked up to my swoop, and went upstairs. When I got away, Gryph was pretty much stuck with me since he was listed as an accessory. Actually, he kind of loved it. It made him the Republic's second most wanted criminal."

Guess who was number one. "And when I turned myself in to my Masters just to stop the rioting my escape started, Gryph and some other friends came back to get me. He says it was because the only thing better for his name than breaking somebody out of Jedi custody was doing it twice, but he's really just a good guy."

In the recesses of Anakin's mind, the name "Gryph" sounded familiar--something about a holo he'd seen years ago--but nothing of immediate use sprang to mind.

"So now you're on the run from the entire Order," Anakin surmised, "who are buying your Masters' story about how things happened?"

"Well, not the entire Order. There's a group fighting the Mandalorians who might believe me. I... kind of went on a suicide mission and saved them from a crazy Mandie scientist," Zayne said. He wasn't doing a very good job staying out of trouble. "But they don't exactly have a lot of sway with the rest of the Order at the moment."

"Oh, stang," Anakin cursed. "This is the start of the Mandalorian Wars. They are such a pain."

Especially whatsherface. Satine. The one with the crush on Obi-Wan.

...Anakin had special priorities.

"It was just a bunch of battles on the edge of the Outer Rim before now. But then the riots started on Taris and the Masters were pulled off the planet. That gave the Mandalorians the opening they needed to attack a big population center in the Republic," Zayne said.

Anakin nodded. "But the rest of the Order doesn't know yet?"

"About the Mandalorians? They know. They're just cautious about getting into another big war so soon after Exar Kun," Zayne said. "That's why the Revanchist group isn't too popular with the rest of the Order. They're getting involved against the wishes of the Council."

"Glad to know that the boot-dragging ways of the Council stayed consistent across the milennia," Anakin groused. He took a sip from his coffee and looked apologetic. "I'm afraid I was never a great studier of history. There wasn't time."

"I was hoping that maybe you might know something about the situation and could give me some direction," Zayne said. "But at the very least, it's nice to know that some people believe me."

"Of course I believe you," Anakin said firmly. "I've had some experience with ronto-headed," possibly evil, "Jedi Masters, and I've been on the wrong end of Council decisions more times than I care to remember."

"Not to this degree, I hope," Zayne said, half-joking.

Anakin's answering smile was wry. "Not exactly," he said. "What's your next move?"

"Well, Gryph has some scheme to get a bunch of his money out of a bank despite the whole fugitive thing," Zayne said. "After that, it's mostly just survival and trying to find some evidence to prove my innocence. I don't have a solid plan for that yet."

"I don't suppose your Masters will have a change of heart and realize they probably misinterpreted something," Anakin replied.

"I didn't pass my Trials but I escaped from five of the Order's most powerful masters twice, while keeping one step ahead of the Republic's forces. And when I did, Taris went into chaos. Their vision might be nuts, but everything that's happened since the murders has confirmed it for them," Zayne said.

Anakin reached up to rub his forehead. "This is why I dislike getting visions," he said. "Nothing good has ever come of it."

"I had a vision about a Twinkie one time that didn't turn out badly," Zayne said.

Anakin smiled. "I always miss the Twinkie visions."

"You've had some?" Zayne asked.

"When Rory was pregnant, there were a lot of weird food-related visions for me," Anakin admitted. "I don't know why."
