Chilly Boulder, Sunday afternoon

It was weird-but-good to be back in Fandom, heading to the ice cream place, and know that she was going home tonight. Disorienting.

That was not stopping Dinah from getting a triple-scoop chocolate cone, though.

"So, how did you handle being a guy last week?"

Raven had mint chocolate chip, three scoops as well. She needed it.

"I did not like it," she sighed. "I felt awkward and uncomfortable."

"Yeaah," Dinah had to agree, curling up in her seat outside the parlor. "Did you turn into one last year? It was less of a shock this year, and at least I had clothes. But wow, still not an easy adjustment."

"I did," Raven confirmed, nodding. "But this time it was made more awkward because it occurred while we were on fall break and it did not go away after a day. That was somewhat frightening because we feared it could become permanent."

She'd feared more for the effect on Karla than herself, though. Her powers weren't tied to her gender.

"No, that wasn't fun, waking up on Monday still a guy." She grinned, though. "I did find out some interesting things, though. Who else though it was going to stick, though?"

"Karla was very distressed," Raven said. She gave Dinah a curious look. "What did you find out that was so interesting?"

"Karla was worse last year. And I get why, her whole world is a little too... hmm. Gender-divided?" She sighed. "So it's not her fault." She took a lick of her cone, then another, turning pink. "Um. Well. I went to classes pretending to be my mythical cousin David, and talked to my friends-- flirted with some of them." Ahem. Prim. "Aaand my stats tutor, Kyle, kind of asked David if Dinah was ready to date anyone after the break-up with her ex-boyfriend."

"And what did 'David' tell him?" Raven asked. "How have you been dealing with the break-up?" No, she didn't have any personal reasons about how such things were handled, not at all.

Given what Raven had hinted about Andy, Dinah was going to reserve judgment on that just yet.

"David told him that Dinah definitely didn't see herself getting back together with her ex," whatever her feelings on that subject, sometimes. "And that she wasn't seeing anyone else. But that she might, you know, be up for coffee or a movie or something, to get used to the idea." She grinned shyly. "And it was nice. We went out on Thursday. Had a good time."

...not that she'd told Jaime yet.

"I am pleased you enjoyed yourself," Raven said, smiling as she nibbled at her ice cream. "Do you think you will be seeing him again, then?"

"I do. He's sweet. And smart. I have a weakness for that." Dinah sighed a little ruefully. "Even if, sometimes, I wish... Enh." She shrugged. "The past is the past, right?"

"It is not so easy to let go of," Raven said quietly. "And it has not been very long."

"No. Two months. And when we danced last night..." Dinah licked a swirl up her chocolate, then bit into it and swallowed. "It was so easy. Banter and smiling and all. But we broke up for a reason." A reason she hadn't agreed with. She sighed, then shook her head. "At least we're still friends, though." She looked over at Raven, eyes soft. "So. You and Andy. What's going on?"

Raven ducked her head, staring at her ice cream cone. "I care for him a great deal, but I rarely see him," she said after a moment. "I am concerned about him. And my own feelings have been conflicted as well."

"Conflicted how?" Dinah asked gently. "Is it just that you feel neglected, or is it something else?"

Don't say someone else, Dinah. Even if you suspect.

"I have found myself envious of the feelings that my friends share," Raven admitted. Her ice cream was beginning to dribble down her cone, and she had to catch it with her napkin. "I want to know that kind of affection, and I am afraid I do not feel that way with Andy. Perhaps if we spent more time together, but...."

"But it's kind of going nowhere?" Dinah said gently, and taking another couple licks of her gone. "And you don't see that changing soon. Even if you talk to him about it?"

"I have not been able to talk to him," Raven said, "though I know I must. It is not fair to him if my affections are not his."

"Yeah. You do. If you get the chance." Dinah shrugged, and reached for a napkin. "I dated George for about two weeks, last summer. And got pretty fond of him. But he disappeared back to England before I could even ask him what was up between us. You and Andy deserve to get that straightened out." She gave Raven an assessing look. "Especially if someone else has your affections."

Raven's cheeks turned pinked, and she busied herself with licking at her melting cone. "I have been troubled by inappropriate affections," she finally said. "I have much to learn about my feelings."

"Inappropriate? Or just inconvenient?" Dinah asked. "And hey, you've come a looooong way. Remember what you were upset about, this time last year?"

Chuck. And the vampire world. And good/bad feelings about what happened with Professor Max.

Oh, she still had vampire issues. Those wouldn't be disappearing any time soon, but she'd managed to tuck them away for the most part.

Raven drew in a breath and nodded. "Yes, I have learned a great deal since then," she said. "But it is not appropriate -- or convenient -- to have feelings for those who do not feel the same."

Dinah reached out a hand to squeeze Raven's, if she'd let her.

"Yeah, that always sucks. I'm sorry." She tilted her head. "You know it's okay to feel that stuff, just not act on it. Right?"

Raven welcomed the contact, but shrugged slightly. "I am not so certain it is all right," she said. "I do not wish to make anyone feel uncomfortable. I must learn to banish these feelings, but it is difficult."

"And here is where I tell you that doesn't work out real well," Dinah said biting into her cone with a crunch, still holding onto Raven's hand. "'Cause then you're thinking about that person all the time. And how much you like them. And how they're not yours. And how you don't want to feel it." She raised her eyebrows. "How are you working on 'banishing' it, or am I close there?"

"I try not to dwell upon it, but it is difficult, especially when I am in their presence," Raven said. She wasn't playing the pronoun game, since the plural was true. "I must meditate harder and center myself. I am accustomed to denying my emotions, after all."
