Luke's Diner, Wednesday

It was bad enough that the planters were still there, full of lettuce. But now the guys in the kitchen had come up with some creative using it.

"No, I won't have it," said Lion-o, scowling. "You can't trick me. It's not really a burger if it doesn't come on a bun. That thing wrapped in lettuce does not qualify as a burger."

Who is pretty grumpy about all the green stuff sneaking into his food.

"Lion-o! How can I enjoy my food today?" Momoko leaned over the counter and pouted at him. "You'll totally give me indigestion making grumpy faces like that! And I like edamame!"

"You do?" asked Lion-o, picking up one of the edamame pods and making a face. "How is that possible? They're green!"

"Why does that matter? They're delicious!" She munched happily. "We have them all over back home. Even in bags, like potato chips! They're totally awesome with teriyaki sauce, too."

"No kidding?" asked Lion-o. He cautiously sniffed the pod, still not sure if it was worth trying.

"You just don't like vegetables very much. Think of it as, uhm... meat for vegetarians!"

"And without all the good things about meat," added Lion-o. "And look what they did to the burgers. The cook is wrapping them in lettuce leaves instead of putting them on a bun like an real burger. This vegetable thing has gone way too far."

"Ooh? Really?" Momoko looked over at the 'burger'. "It looks pretty tasty, though. Maybe calling it a burger is weird, but that's at least meat? What flavour does the lettuce add?"

"None. Lettuce is totally flavorless, as far as I'm concerned," said Lion-o. "But maybe it absorbs flavor from something else? If you put enough teriyaki sauce on it, it might be tolerable."

"Lettuce can also be used to, like, refresh your tastebuds. But it looks like maybe you would want to put the sauce on the lettuce, you're right."

She smiled back up at Lion-o. "Have you even tried it? I bet you just looked at it and said yuck."

Lion-o winced. "What if I try it and it's really yucky?" he asked.

"Then you don't eat any more of it, drink some water, and eat a piece of cake instead." She shrugged. "Always works for me!"

"But!" She leaned forward, grinning. "What if it's the most delicious way to eat a burger that you've ever tried? And you would have missed out just because it looked different!"

Lion-o pondered this for a moment, then nodded. "Alright, I'll try it. But I'm insisting on having a chocolate shake handy, just in case. Did you want anything while I'm in the kitchen?"

"Ooh! I'll have a shake too! That sounds good!" She held up her empty plate, looking only the slightest bit guilty. "And another order of the edamame?"

When Lion-o returned from the kitchen, he had two shakes and a plate of edamame, with the cook behind him carrying a burger and another order of edamame. "I figured that if I was trying one, I should try the other," Lion-o reasoned. "And if I like them, you can have the rest of my edamame."

Momoko waved to the cook, smiling. "Thank you!" She took her shake and plate of soybeans happily.

"That's a good idea, Lion-o! Ooh! Can I taste some of the burger, too?"

"You might have to take the rest of mine if it's really yucky," said Lion-o. He took a deep breath before taking a tentative bite.

"You know, this isn't as bad as I thought it would be," he said after chewing for a little while. "You don't really taste the lettuce, but it gives it a little crunch."

"See?" Momoko smiled and leaned closer to poke his shoulder. "Just because it looks bad or scary doesn't mean it is." As he should know!

She reached over to his plate of edamame to steal one. "And now your face doesn't say horrible things about it!"

"Guess I should try one of those next, right?" asked Lion-o, putting his lettuce wrap down and tentatively picking up one of the pods.

"You should! They're really tasty!" She munched her own... or, rather, the one she stole from him. "And if you don't like them, you can eat more of the hamburger as well as the shake!"

Oooh, shake. Hmmm.

"Here goes nothing," said Lion-o, closing his eyes and popping one into his mouth. After munching on it for a while, he smiled. "Wow, it's way better than I expected! I should listen to you more often."

"You totally should!" She agreed, dipping a soybean pod into her milkshake. "I'm awesome, remember?"

"They almost have a meaty taste to them," said Lion-o, grabbing another one. "I could eat them all day!"

"I wouldn't; they get kind of boring after too many, and you start to not like them. Which would be a total waste." Momoko tasted the pod she'd dipped in the shake.

"Hmm. Well that's not bad, but not really delicious," she muttered.

Because you like edamame. (Yes, Firefox dictionary, that is really a word!)
