The Preserve, Monday Evening

A labyrinth growing in the island, little creepers running around, people getting kidnapped. Cloud was half sorry he hadn't stayed a little longer on Midgar, so he could have just blissfully missed the current mess. But anyway, there was no point on complaining now, right? Fusion Swords on his back, he walked slowly on the Preserve, paying attention to every sound around him. It was a dangerous place in a dangerous time, so it was pretty obvious what he was looking for. Trouble, he was looking for a little bit of trouble. If everyone else was having their share of awkwardness, he deserved some fun. Besides, he had took his time to bring some Materia too.

Too bad he didn't know it wouldn't work when the time came, but then again, he was willing to be surprised.

[For the little pests!]

The goblins weren't looking for trouble! They were looking for ... okay, they weren't clear on who or what they were looking for, right now. They'd gotten all the people they came for. Maybe they were looking for trouble, too! Yeah! That was it!

Blame Stu for not giving them better instructions.

Right now, they were trying to sneak up on the blonde kid with the weird hair. And then, one of the shadows plowed right into another, making a sound vaguely like pots and pans thunking together.

"Soooo-rry," sang out one shadow.

Stealth: not really their forte.

"He pushed me!" one goblin insisted, with a bit of a huff.

"I didn't mean to," said another voice. The same slow and -- let's be honest -- derpy voice that had apologized a minute ago.

"Shhhhh!" hissed a third. The crowd of shadows all straightened itself up and quieted down. "We're all fine, yes. You didn't hear anything. So you should just keep walking now."

This might have succeeded at sounding vaguely ominous, if it weren't for the derpy goblin chiming in again. "I think he did hear us."

Which earned him another "Shhhh!!!"

"What's he doing?" asked the derpy one again.

Another "Shhhhh!" from the thoroughly exasperated goblin who seemed to be the only competent member of the crew. (Which was really using 'competent' loosely.)

"He wants us to attack him," explained another goblin. "He's pretending not to look."

"Let's throw rocks at him," Derpy suggested.

"We can't now," said Semi-Competent. "You gave away the surprise!"

One goblin put his hands on his hips, exasperated. "You're the one who wants a fight, Mr. Fancy-Pants," he said.

Derpy, of course, chose that moment to pick up a rock and throw it at Cloud. He so rarely had good ideas! He had to run with them, when he did!

Of course, once he started, a few other goblins decided to join in. So now there were some rocks, being hurled ... near Cloud. Some of them might even hit him.

Their aim was about as good as their stealth.

The flat side of Cloud's sword hit Derpy's midsection with a thwack, and there Derpy went, flying, and taking several other goblins with him. Had Cloud ever gone bowling? If so, the way the goblins fell over one another might look oddly familiar.

Not all of them, however. The few who hadn't been smacked with the fusion sword were now attempting to counterattack. One was running up to jump up and down on Cloud's left foot. Another leaped up, hoping to hang from Cloud's elbow and kick wildly at his torso. Another was doing his best to climb onto Cloud's back, so he could thump that spiky hair with his club.

The goblins weren't very good fighters, one-on-one. Which was why they took the mob approach. You could only ward off so many at once.
