Monday late afternoon/evening, near the Community Center

Momoko had, as promised, gone out to see if she could find what had happened to Karla. Leaving the dorms to head into town for information led Momoko to her first clue almost immediately - a giant stone wall... no, a series of stone walls. That started near the dorms but seemed to be all over?

She spent some time walking around town, examining the walls, trying to figure out what it all meant, until finally she reached the dorms again and it suddenly clicked why it seemed so familiar. Dinah had one! Or, well, Ms Helena did.

"A hedge maze! Only it's stone!" Momoko stared. "So this is the weird thing the radio was talking about? They couldn't just say Karla and the others got lost in a maze? I am totally teasing her about this later."

Wait... The maze didn't belong here!

Tim was out patrolling. Yes, alone. Yes he was aware it was somewhat foolish but he didn't know who to call for back up since he didn't want to endanger Gwynn unnecessarily.

Yes Gwynn has permission to smack him upside the head for this later.

His sword was glowing, providing plenty of light when he needed it.

"Hello?" he called out, spotting Momoko.

Momoko looked up, and grinned. "Mr. Comic book store owner! Hi!" She stopped poking at the wall and waved.

"Hey Spy Girl." Tim smiled. "How was your Trick or Treating? Also, are you one of the many people on this island who are capable of handling themselves in the event of an invasion?"

"I made a totally awesome haul, thank you! Lots of candy!" She flashed a V-sign at him. "And I totally am. My name's Momoko! Momoko Akatsutsumi! Did you know your sword is glowing?"

It probably said something that she wasn't really concerned that the comic book store owner had a sword at all.

"Just checking, I didn't want to give you a lame lecture about how it might not be safe to be out alone unnecessarily. And yeah I did. Is it hurting your eyes?"

"Nnn." Momoko shook her head, grinning at the idea of getting such a lecture. "It's fine. And totally handy for fighting in the dark! I've never seen a sword that glows; is it magic?"

"It is. It used to be a magic wand, and a sword, then they got fused together. It's come in handy a lot."

"WOW!" Momoko leaned in for a closer look. as much as she could when it was glowing. So, can you still use it for a wand, then, as well as a sword? can you do other magic things with it?"

"Oh yeah. I've fired energy bolts, drawn the magic energy out of other things, and used it to fight Gods and shit."

She frowned at his language, but didn't say anything. "That's the best kind of weapon, when you can use it more than one way!"

"So, are you out looking for the missing people too?"

Tim made a mental note of the frown, and to not swear in front of her anymore. He figured it was only polite.

"I am. I've dealt with something similar when I was in High School."

"Really?! That's great!" Momoko looked eagerly at him. "What happened? Is it the same thing, can you tell?"

"Well last time the people taken were replaced with doubles. So, it's not exactly the same thing." He had figured out what was going on last time because the kids he was babysitting were way too well behaved.

Cold or not, when an animal who weighs more than you informs you that it's time to go out for a walk, you take it out for a walk.

By which we mean, if you're Cally, you get taken out for a walk. Possibly you can keep up. Maybe you can take in the fact that your surroundings aren't as they usually appear, but that and breathing at the same time might be a bit of a challenge.

"Nana, slow down!"

Oh, look. A wall. That brought them both to a stop. Finally!

"Ah! Such a cute dog!" Momoko had stepped around a corner to see what the commotion was, hoping it would be something to explain the corner. "Ah! Cally! I didn't know you had a dog!"

Cally took the chance to get in a full breath, and promptly coughed in the cold. "I think it's more that she has me! Her name is Nana; she arrived with it already attached."

One mittened hand knocked against the wall while Nana whuffed at the sound of her name. "Where did this come from?" This ought to be the path past the community centre, surely, unless she was completely turned around.

"I have a cat. You should meet him sometime!" Momoko looked up from being happily slobbered upon in return for ear skritches. "I don't know. I was indoors all day yesterday and it was here when I came out today. It's all over town."

"Possibly without Nana around," Cally said with a laugh, glancing away from the stone for a moment. "Not that I think she'd hurt him; she just might drown him in drool."

Looking back at the wall, she added, "All over town? Someone can't have built this overnight, surely!"

"Well, they totally could have? I mean, not one person but maybe lots of people and machines and stuff. But it totally doesn't look... built." Momoko stood back up and pulled a handkerchief from her pocket, wiping her face. "And it's in places where there should be other things. Like the Community Center?" She raised up on her toes to try to look over the wall.

Good luck with that; Cally was on the tall side herself and wearing boots with heels, and she wasn't having any success with it.

"The island being odd again, then? There were sweets falling from the sky this weekend, apparently."

Yeah, Momoko hadn't been able to see over ANY of the walls today, but that didn't stop her from continuously trying. It was weird to not see the town!

"Yep! And it snowed sugar! Christmas is totally a fun time to be here usually." She sank back to her heels and grinned at Cally. "But when it gets weird it gets really weird. I'm thinking that this is a maze, though, not just walls." She flattened her palm against the stone.

"How can you tell that?"

"My friend Dinah's sister has a hedge maze in her back yard. The way the walls are lined up and join in places, and how tall it is... It totally reminds me of it."

"Why would someone want-- oh no, you don't!" Nana had her snout to the ground and was sniffing along the bottom of the wall, tugging at her lead as if she wanted to follow it. "We don't know what's in there!"

"Ah! Maybe she's smelling Karla and the others!" Momoko beamed and bent to Nana's level. "Is that it? Do you know where Karla and Ender and the others are?"
