Luke's Diner | Friday | December 31

It was the last day of the year and Bod's first day at the diner. When he arrived, he took the time to introduce himself to all the staff, complimenting them on the food he'd had yesterday and the general upkeep of the diner. Making a good first impression seemed to be key to getting along with people as the days passed.

Once done with that, he walked around, acclimating himself to the new area and getting a feel of where everything was and how everything worked. Once that was done, he took up a spot behind the counter and started wiping said counters down while he waited for customers.

Bod's around if you need him for anything!

As she said she would, Ariel found her way to the diner before going back to the dorms to get ready for the party, and after she'd stopped in at Pixie Dust to pick up some cute winterwear for the whole event. How someone would need to purchase that many shopping bags worth of stuff for one party was probably a mystery, but it did make for an amusing scene with Ariel trying to get the door open with so much stuff.

She didn't seem phased, though, bouncing right up to the counter and setting her bags down as she hopped on a stool. "Hi, Bod! Haven't burned the place down yet, that's a good sign!"

Laughing, Bod came around the counter to help her with the bags if she needed it. He would probably never understand how people shopped that much but it amused.

"Hullo, Ariel. I've been mostly letting the cooking staff handle all those type of things. I've mostly just been cleaning and helping those that come in."

"So definitely a good thing the place isn't burned down," Ariel reasoned with a smile. "Because if you managed that with just cleaning and helping, then you'd really be in trouble. How's it going, though? Good? Do you like it? Is it still too early to tell?"

"I've enjoyed what I've done so far," he said, helping her pile some of her bags on the counter. "The staff seems quite nice and helpful and Miss Burrows was very kind to give me a chance. The food is excellent too. I don't think I've made any huge mistakes either so I would call it a success thus far."

"Okay, then, now I'll have to really challenge you, then," Ariel decided, plopping the last of the bags beside her and tilting her head at the menu. "What would you recommend?"

Bod paused and had to glance at the specials board before looking thoughtful again. "Were you looking for a full meal or just something small to tide you over until tonight?"

"Well," said Ariel, "it'll be a long night and I've already had a busy morning of shopping, so I better fuel up. I'm pretty hungry, too. Shopping takes a lot of energy! Almost as much as swimming."

"Well, my personal recommendation would be the chicken scallopine because you'll get a variety of different flavors from it," Bod suggested, trying to sound convincing.

It was harder than he thought it'd be even if he was being honest. "You get both the taste of pasta, the taste of meat, and all the different spices in one meal. It's very filling and completely original."

Ariel bit her lip a little dubiously. "Scallopine doesn't mean there's scallops in it, does it?"

"It doesn't," he assured her, shaking his head. "It's a cooking term that basically means sauteed cutlets that have been pounded thin. No scallops, I promise you."

Bod wanted to ask if she was allergic but he also didn't want to talk about anything that might cause discomfort when he was helping her order food for the first time.

"Okay, good," said Ariel with a nod. "That sounds perfect, then! And when I'm finished and it's delicious, I'll be sure to inform your boss about the wonderful recommendation made by the charming new guy at the counter."

"Thank you," he said, letting the faint blush cross his cheeks as he wrote the order down and handed it to the cook. "It'll be ready shortly, I promise."

He came back to lean against the counter and glanced at the bags.

"What all did you purchase?"

"I'm in no rush," Ariel assured him with a smile, and then considered the bags. "And...a lot. Probably more than I should have, but there was just some really cute stuff and I figured I'll decide which outfit to wear tonight later. There's some dresses and coats and mittens and hats and gloves and necklaces and shoes...lots of shoes, and this really nice cloak with fur on the edges, but I think it's fake fur, but it's still really nice. Would you like to see some of it?"

She did end that question with a giggle, though, and another reassuring note: "It's okay to say no if you don't want to."

Because, you know, boys and everything didn't get as excited about that sort of thing, and she didn't know him quite as well enough to just go right into it like she might have with Flounder.

"I would," he decided, nodding. He might not understand the urge to buy things but that didn't mean he wasn't curious about what people liked to purchase and why. It was insightful.

"I don't buy a lot of things myself so I'm always interested to see what I'm missing," he added. "It sounds like you had a good time."

"Awww," Ariel chuckled a little again. "That's not a bad thing, not buying a lot of things. I probably buy too much; I just love stuff! I don't know if you've ever seen my collection in my room, but it's impressive! It's even bigger than the one I had at home, but it's a lot easier here, because there's just more stuff here."

And, as she was talking, she was sorting through her bags to find something particularly good to show Bod, which meant eventually pulling out a large box (http://www.dsw.com/shoe/totes+diamond+quilted+boot?prodId=177749&category=dsw10cat120044&brand=). "Ooh, these are probably my favorite. They're very cute but functional, too! They'll be really useful for the winter, I think."

Proudly, she opened up the box to show off the new pair of boots.

Bod peered inside the box and the nodded approvingly. For winters, he could definitely see the appeal of a strong yet warm pair of boots and those did look like they fit the bill.

"Those are very nice," he said, nodding. "I think they'll be very helpful should we get some snow but they'll also be stylish."

He knew nothing about style but it seemed like a good thing to say.

"They look comfortable as well. You can wear them and your feet won't start hurting after just a few minutes. Very nice, Ariel."

"Unlike these," Ariel said with a giggle as she dug out and presented a far less practical boot (http://www.dsw.com/shoe/n.y.l.a.+shanni+bootie?prodId=220681&category=dsw10cat70015&brand=).

But so much more gorgeous one!

Bod's eyes widened and he was speechless for a moment. "Those are...an interesting pair of boots. Is walking even possible in those?"

Obviously he was not an expert in female footwear.

"Probably not so much in the winter," Ariel admitted, unable to stop giggling a little more. "But yes, it is possible. Feet are amazing things, you know, Bod. So they need to look amazing, too."

"I've done some damage to my poor feet over the last year so I tend to just stick with comfortable boots or sneakers," he explained, still peering at those boots of hers.

"I've found that girls are a lot more open minded about their footwear than most males are," he continued. "They experiment and try more and are more willing to take chances. I'm rather a stick in the mud when it comes to that."

"I should probably warn you," Ariel said, as she hugged one of the boots a little close to her, "that words like that only sound like challenges to me. We haven't hung out much lately, so I'll let you have a chance to retract it before I drag you shoe shopping. They don't make shoes this exciting for guys, but I'm sure we'll find something."

"I'm not a good shopper," he reminded her, laughing quietly. "Even if I were to go shoe shopping, it would consist of me staring blankly at the rows upon rows of things. I just recently bought a winter hat and I think it was a rather bad purchase."

It was such a doofy hat.
