The Gig: Thursday [1-6-11]

It was Thursday, so everyone knew where Helen could be found. Except for that brief time when she was at class.

It was Thursday, so everyone knew where James could be found near closing time of The Gig, waiting for Helen with a smile on his face. And an apple or two for the horses.

[shhh this was always here]

"That's why I brougjt them," he said, pulling out a dagger and cutting the apples in enough pieces for the horses and humans.

He held up an apple slice. "You do want a bit?" he asked, moving well within an arm's-length of her with apple in hand.

"Yes. However, you are on your own if you want oats," he said dryly, a hint of a smile.

"Just the apple for now?" he teased, holding it up for her to take.

"I as well. I've spent too many nights eating trail rations to like oats directly," he said. "Something here? Something on the trail? Not something baked into a hard brick," he said hastily. "Perhaps even a meal in town?" Ooh, fancy!

He grinned. "What this town needs is a good Midkemian inn, with a roaring fire to sit in front of and a bawdy singer in the corner, and a barkeep who knows when to water the ale."

Ah, home.

"Cold-weather clothing seems to be better here, I'll grant." Warm, dry, and feet in the same sentence were a luxury when slogging through winter.

"Boots," he continued. "Warm boots that actually fit, even if made by machines. I can stand in puddles without wondering if I'm going to lose a toe afterwards." He flashed her a smile. "I would say we could build a bonfire out by the summer cabins, but I would rather stay inside in my old age in the winter." He winked at her.

"A great idea, even if I lack a proper fireplace," he agreed.

"Good company makes up for many things," he said knowingly.

"Especially when there is a lack of other company," he stated. Having a private room was a godsend.

"Well, I have an arrangement to keep with the horses," he said, indicating the apple slices. "After that, I believe there were plans on the table for a picnic?"

James went about the business of applying apples to horses, murmuring a few words to each that, if not friendly, would not foster feelings in the horses to toss James or Helen off their backs the next time they saddled up.

"I seem to be all out of apples," he said when he was done.

"The night awaits," he said, offering his arm.

"Shall we?" he asked.
