Shunsui had taken his sweet time getting to the store today. Not because he usually didn't pay much attention to being punctual, but simply because, if the week had been any indication, he could show up late, discover someone else behind the counter, and hire them to do all the work. It happened on Wednesday, after all, and yesterday...

But, alas, today, the only ones in the shop when Shunsui got there were Apu-san, Bob-chan, and the cheese panda. So Shunsui sighed and settled behind the counter after grabbing a bottle of sake and resigned himself to the fact that, perhaps, sometimes, he actually did have to work at the shop himself.

Or at least pretend to be.

Thank you, come again!

Surprisingly, he's not napping yet. Give him a few more hours.

It's my first day off after a full week of working. YAAAAAAAAAAAAY.

Dolf had managed to acquire... a dollar. By accident, involving a gremlin and a drinks machine, but that was a whole story that would take way, way too long to put into narrative. The thing was, his bank balance had finally gone from zero to $1, and so he figured he might as well spring for something nice at the local grocery store.

... Like a tiny carton of milk.

"Hi," he said, when he'd made it to the front with the milk, and smiled.

Shunsui eyed the tiny carton of milk, and then looked toward the boy who was getting the tiny carton of milk.

"Thirsty?" he asked. Because that was the only reason he could think of that someone would bother buying just a tiny carton of milk. They were just really thirsty, for milk, but not too much! Let's not go crazy here!

"The other cartons are expensive," Dolf pointed out. Well, for anyone who didn't currently have more than a dollar bill to his name. "...I like milk."

No reason to get defensive, Dolf.

"Alcohol is better ♥," Shunsui said with a smirk and then eyed the boy oddly. "A half gallon for one fifty is expensive?"

Like he really had any concept of money and spending and groceries to begin with. He left that all to Apu-san.

"It is if you only have one dollar," Dolf said, holding up the bill in question. "...and I am not sixteen yet, so I don't know about the alcohol."

"If the bar can serve younger than that, " Shunsui noted, "so can I ♥. Age is just a number, after all. If you only have a dollar, why spend it on something like milk? Why not save it for something better, later?"

Pause.

"Like alcohol ♥."

"I don't want alcohol," Dolf said, with a sigh. "I mean, I'd like more money, but right now I have a dollar and I just want something nice to drink. I don't like the milk in the cafetaria."

Shunsui shrugged. "If you insist," he said, and was about to ring up the boy for the milk but then he paused, had a thought, and realized he didn't have to. He would prefer not to; that would be work.

"You know," he proposed with a musing tone, "you can easily earn more money...."

"I thought about that," Dolf said, blinking at the change of subject, "But I didn't find anywhere that was hiring, so..."

Give it a few seconds. Ellipses. Whatever.

"...Do you have any openings?"

Good boy.

Shunsui grinned a little.

Besides, he'd already broken his Beautiful Female Hiring Streak with that ridiculous kid from Wednesday, and, compared to Hank, how bad could the Milk Kid be?

"I just might ♥," Shunsui said, musing slightly. "Granted, we've got quite a few employees now, but let me think ♥. Sundays, obviously, could use a clerk, or else I wouldn't be here, and Thursdays, I believe. George-chan will be switching ♥."

"I have school on Thursdays!" Dolf protested, though it was a happy, cheery kind of protesting. He could maybe actually get some money on hand again-- if he kept working for long enough, he might actually be able to afford a flight ticket home, actually. "But Sundays are good, if that's okay. I don't do much on Sundays anyway."

"Sundays are perfect ♥!" said Shunsui brightly. "In fact, if you want to start today, you can have that milk for free ♥!"

And then he'll just shove Apu-san on the boy to train him, and he'll just go have a nap so maybe he could try hitting up the bar and some lovely ladies later tonight!

"Okay!"

Let it not be said Dolf could not be a team player. And currently, even a cheerful one! (Though that was not really his normal state of being. "So I just stand behind the counter and put things on the cash machine?"

Or whatever it was called.

"And sell stuff," Shunsui said with a nod, before lifting his head, hand to his mouth, so he could call out over the store. Sure, there was a PA system right there at the counter, but this was more fun. "Oy! Apu-saaaaaaaan! Come meet our new employee; we're going to need you to show...."

He dropped the hand, turning to the boy with more of a whipser, "Err, what was your name, again?"

'Sell stuff'. Well, that didn't exactly sound complicated. "Dolf," Dolf produced, on cue. "Dolf... Wega."

One of these days, he was going to stop wanting to introduce himself as 'Rudolf of Amstelveen'. Today was not that day. "And you're--?" Hey, that was only fair.

"Shunsui Kyōraku ♥," he offered back, beaming and giving a little sweep of a bow. "Captain of the 8th Division, Store Proprietor, Best-Selling Novelist, Instructor of Pacifism, and Certified Ladies' Man ♥. And this--"

He opened his arm as Apu-san started to come up to the counter and look at Dolf skeptically, "is Apu-san. He'll show you the ropes today, Dolf ♥."

"...Hey, Apu," said Dolf, unconsciously straightening his back as if to answer Apu's skepticism. "So I guess you're stuck with me for today."

It could be worse.

Yes. He could be stuck with Shunsui.

But Shunsui was doing what he could to prepare for a graceful exit, including already edging toward the door as he talked. "And, Apu-san, don't forget to introduce Dolf to Bob-chan and the panda as well ♥! And the stock rooms, and the alcohol section, and---oh, well, you've been doing this for ages, you know what to do, Apu-san, so I'll leave young Dolf in your capable hands as I go and do...more...managerial...stuff....♥."

... Dolf was starting to wonder what managerial stuff Shunsui could be doing that involved him being outside the shop, but he'd never exactly managed a store before himself. So maybe it was--

... No, Shunsui was definitely just fleeing. His prerogative, Dolf supposed. He just wanted to start on work. "Uh, bye..." he said, skeptically, giving Shunsui one little careful wave. "Good luck doing your 'managerial stuff'."

"Thank you ♥!" Shunsui, now at the door, beamed. "And good luck to you on your first day, Dolf ♥. I'm sure you'll do brilliantly ♥."

And, with a cheerful chime of the door, he was gone. And terribly pleased by his deft escape from that dreaded Work.
