Our Lady of Fandom [Tuesday afternoon]

While the snow might have been coming down in ridiculous (to Sookie) amounts, it hadn't been that hard for her to get to the church to set up for the memorial. Granted, not everyone had the benefit of an ice-manipulating boyfriend, but she was pretty sure people would come, still, anyway.

The setup was simple, classy. A few candles (the lack of power helped), and Sookie placed a picture of Raven at the front, on a table. She figured that as people filed in, they could say goodbye, or whatever they needed to. And if people wanted to speak to the whole group, they could -- there was space for that, after all. But as for her, Sookie was going to stay in her warm black coat, with her warm black gloves, and feel cold all over in spite of it.

[omg post is totes NFB, radio kids, but memorial is open to all who know about it!]

Tahiri was in Raven's debt for what Raven had done to help mentally heal her; she hadn't forgotten that, so there wasn't even a question of her coming to the service, blizzard or not.

She was dressed in her best Jedi robes, new lightsaber clipped to her belt; her expression was stoic -- she'd lost enough friends in her seventeen years and that in its own way was sad -- but, she hoped, no less compassionate for that restraint.

Unless you were standing near Bobby, that is. He was still having issues keeping that chill under control, which, to anyone who knew about his powers, at least, was really the only outward sign as to how deeply he'd been affected by all this.

Was it even a question that Kennedy would be here? Not even.

She still looked absolutely wrecked, less confident and sure of herself than she usually was, but she was trying her hardest. If for no other reason than to be here for her friends.

Her hardest didn't do much to disguise how rough the whole thing had been on her, though Kennedy didn't really care how much of that showed.

Unlike the past few days when she'd been crying all over the place, today Karla was calm and composed, though very pale. Her eyes and cheeks stayed dry and her grave and somber expression remained fixed, giving nothing away about how she was truly feeling.

Even a blizzard wouldn't keep Scully from showing up to a friend's funeral. Raven wasn't a close friend, but she'd been helpful, and a likable person and leader at the Support Services group. The least she was owed was some last respects.

Being Karla's roommate meant that it was, essentially, impossible for Gabrielle to not know what had happened. That in turn meant that it was impossible for her to consider not being here.

Of course she'd come prepared with something to say; that was why she was standing near one wall, lips moving silently as she went over the words. She didn't really care about theatrics or exceptionally ornate language, for once; she just wanted this to be heartfelt . . . and to not stumble over the words.

Dolf was grateful this was being held in a church. At least, part of him was. It was the part of him that kept thinking back to the church of Saint Nicholas in Bari and the comfort that it had brought him.

The rest of him mostly looked a little bedraggled, and a lot saddened. He hadn't known Raven that well, but he'd known her well enough to knock her off the list of deaths that would have just rendered him numb, and he owed it to her to show up.

Hurley hadn't expected this was the way he was going to come back to this particular messed up island. Even with all the death that had been around him lately, this still hit him hard. Dressed in a dark suit, his hair slicked as to be less outrageous, he stood looking the opposite of what people would remember of Hurley. He was sad, and struggling to keep his composure.

"I don't know if you are one of St. Nicolaas," Dolf began. He felt a little ridiculous, for two reasons; first, he'd had trouble deciding on whether to go here or not, suddenly again too conscious of all the children who had never gotten a proper burial, whose deaths had numbed him. Why should anyone else get this kind of extravagance?

But that was a stupid thought, and he chastisised himself for it. He'd buried Carolus too, after all.

Second of all, though, he felt silly and more awkward than usual doing this in English. He sighed, and licked his lips, and started in with his native tongue instead. "Maar hij gaf altijd bescherming aan lijdende kinderen, en hoop aan ieder die dat nodig had. Ik hoop dat hij ook voor jou klaarstaat...*"

He talked a little more, but not much. He didn't need to say much. Maybe some of it had been for the children, too, and not just the one they'd most recently lost.

[[ 'but he always gave protection to suffering children, and hope to all who needed it. I hope he'll be there for you too'. /nerd ]]

Stephanie Brown hadn't known Raven and had no reason to be at the memorial. (And wouldn't even have known about it, if not for accidental, partial success while trying to practice some basic hacking.)

Robin, on the other hand . . . well, there was a history with Robin and the Titans, wasn't there? Even if Superboy refused to acknowledge her as Robin yet, there was . . . there was tradition! So there was a figure lurking hiding out quietly in a dark corner of the choir loft, just watching for now; this was where having a black cape came in handy. The bright red, green, and yellow of her costume would be awfully over-festive for the situation.

"Hey," Hurley said, more comfortable addressing a stand-in for his friend than he ever wished he'd be. He'd done it a lot on the other island.

"You got really lousy timing, you know?" His voice quavered a bit. "I was gonna come back, visit with everybody. Tell you all about the other island, and Claire that looks like Tahiri, and Vincent the dog, and Kate who can't make up her mind about guys, and Charlie."

That got him started. The tears started to trickle down his cheeks, his face contorted in sadness.

"You see a guy, up there where you guys are? All shaggy hair, maybe singing a dumb song about 'you all, everybody'? You guys should probably hang out. Some of the best friends I ever had. You've got a lot in, in common." He'd started to sob a bit, and wiped his eyes with the back of his hand. "I was counting on you to fill me in on Rumour Gal, so I'd know what Hoshi was talking about. I'm, I'm gonna miss you, Raven."

And that was all Hurley could say, but he stood there for another moment, just looking into the picture of his lost friend.

Peter dressed up, in a dark suit, before slogging out to the church in the snow. He had sort of lost touch with Raven recently, but that didn't mean he couldn't pay his respects. His common smugness and loudmouth attitude was not in play, today. He was somber, respectful, and quiet. Ready to be a friendly shoulder for those who mourned greater than he.

Alex didn't really plan on doing much once he got here but he was there. He'd taken a seat in the back, bundled up in a coat and hat. Despite not knowing Raven that well, he remembered looking after when she'd suddenly turned into a child and he remembered her healing him when he'd gotten back from the Capital Wasteland.

So, he sat there quietly, head down and thoughts solemn.

Tara crept in a few minutes late, and sat near the back of the group of mourners. Guilt still crushed her chest so hard that she sometimes felt like she couldn't breathe -- but this wasn't about her. It was about Raven, and paying her respects was the (very, very) least she could do.

She wore the heart chakra pendant Raven had given her for Christmas over her dark sweater. It made her feel a bit like Raven was still out there, somewhere, if only as a memory.

Tara stood before the photo for a long moment before she reached out to lightly touch the frame.

"Hi," she said softly. "I ... I'm sorry, Raven. I knew something was wrong and I got so scared of bothering you, or you th-thinking I was picking on you, and you kept saying it was nothing and ... I wanted to believe you. I shouldn't have let you slip away. And I should have been strong enough not to -- not to --"

She didn't finish the sentence. Not to get possessed? not to lead their friends into killing Raven? If Raven could hear her, she knew what was meant.

"I b-believe you've gone someplace peaceful," she finished. "And I hope s-someday I see you again. Goodbye."

And then she turned away.

Fraser had only really known Raven by name but he felt it pertinent to be at the memorial just to know that the faculty was there for the students that were grieving.

He stood at the back of the church, wearing his heavy overcoat over his uniform, and paid his respects.

Ender hadn't really known Raven all that well, but considering the circumstances-- and considering everything with Karla-- he thought it would be only prudent to turn up. He had no inclination towards disturbing anyone in their grief, however, and so he didn't stride forward or interrupt anyone, or speak up.

Instead, he stayed near the back, and slipped out a little while later.

Some of the eulogies were making him think-- though not about anything that had anything to do with Raven, specifically.
