Luke's Diner | Friday

With a book tucked under his arm, Bod made his way into work quietly. By now, the staff was used to his quiet spells and greeted him with waves and some brief greetings. Bod returned the sentiment. It'd been awhile since he really felt like holding long, deep, personal conversations with someone so this was about all he was capable of for the moment. That didn't mean he wasn't talkative, he was just being selective with his words.

Luke's was open and apparently in full breakfast mode all day.

The boy with the book is there, ready to help you out, if needed!

So Ino hadn't talked to Bod in a while, which was--well, she'd been busy on quite a number of levels, but when she passed by Luke's and spotted him on her way to see if the gallery was open, Ino figured it was a good time to stop on in.

"How do you say 'Cha-la-ah?'" she asked, tripping a bit over the pronounciation, even as she leaned against the counter. "And what's it mean? And hi, Bod."

"Hullo, Ino," he said, putting his book down and giving her a quick smile. "I think it's Challah with a soft 'shh' sound at the beginning. From what I've picked up from the cook, it's a type of bread. It smells quite good, however it might be pronounced. How are you today?"

"Shha-la-ah?" Hmmm. Ino gave the board a dubious glance, but shrugged a little. If he said so, after all... "I'm..."

How was she, anyway?

"Dealing," Ino settled on, with a bit of a smile. "Which is better than some days, admittedly. You?"

"I think I'm doing about the same," he replied, nodding and leaning against the counter. "Some days it's easier than the next but each day's a little better. I'll just keep dealing. Before I forget, would you like some challah french toast?"

"Can I get the chocolate chip panckaes instead?" she asked, with a bit of a grin. "How could I resist cinnamon cream?"

Ino studied him.

"Wanna talk?" she asked, not really sure if she should. "We could trade off on difficulties, if you'd like."

She didn't really 'like' in this case, but if it got him to talk... Ino could stand talking about some of what was going on with her.

"I think I'd enjoy talking, yes. Give me just a moment to put your order in. He scribbled it down on a piece of paper and handed it to the clerk who nodded and got started.

"It shouldn't take long," he offered, coming back to lean on the counter. "Things have gotten...a little better for me since we last spoke. Better in certain areas, worse in others. I think that evens it out?"

"I'm not in a rush," she assured him, hopping up onto one of the seats. "Evens out, huh? I think mine--got worse?" Yes, yes it had. "But I've figured out how to do what I want to do and so there's foward motion, which helps."

"I don't know if I've figured out a...solid direction," he confessed, looking a bit abashed about that. "I know I want to move forward but sometimes it's easier said than done. And there are always things that are going to pull you back. I'm glad to hear that there's an end in sight for you, so to speak. Or, at least, a goal."

Ino made a face at that mention of an end.

"No endings," she said hurridly, because that was--too close to ill-luck wishing for her to not counteract that. "But a direction, for sure. It might wind up being the wrong direction, but it's more than... what I was doing. It's not easy," Ino admitted to him, "and there's definitely times when just... being stuck where you are is simpler, 'cause it's pain but you know the pain, yeah? Whereas moving forward might bring new pain and you don't know 'bout it yet."

"Yes, I definitely understand that," he said, nodding. "And I apologize for talking of endings. I just got confirmation that what happened to me was definitely the end from the other person involved."

Saying Kate's name wasn't coming easy to him lately.

"So, I've started building myself up after that and leaving it behind." And it was so hard. "It was her choice to have it become an end though. I'm comforted to know that I tried."

"I--I'm sorry," she said, toying with her hair. "That can't be easy, havin' an ending happen. I'm tryin' to change something so, it's a bit of a different situation than yours."

More than a bit, but...

"I think that--once you really get goin' on a path that it gets easier."

Easier, not easy.

"There's no need to apologize, it's not your fault," he assured her, smiling. "What you need to change, do you think you'll succeed or is it too early to tell?"

"I don't know," she admitted, looking a bit vulnerable. "It's a pretty big thing to change and I'm just... one person."

Which wasn't going to stop her from trying, no.

"You're one person but you're strong and resourceful," he said sincerely, smiling again. "If anyone can find a way, you could. And I wish you the best of luck, you know. I'd offer assistance but I don't know if I'd have the skills you'd need."

"You could be my chief confidant," she said, a bit amused despite herself. "Who keeps me on track and doesn't let me get too discouraged."

"I can do that," he said and chuckled a little. "I've been told that I have endless wells of optimism even when I shouldn't. It'll be good to put it to use again. It's been dormant for awhile."

Her smile was a careful thing, there.

"Ain't nothing wrong with being optimistic," she noted, "considerin' I've got to be to think there's any chance of this workin' out."

And it would. It would.

"I was finding it a little difficult for awhile," he admitted with a shrug. "I think when everything bad that can happen does and it all happens at once, that makes it hard to find your optimism. Everything good for me seemed to turn sour in one fell swoop so I lost sight. I think I'm getting myself back together though."

"I know how that can go," she said, with a bit of a sigh. "It isn't really optimism for me, yet, to think I can do this, you know? It's more--stubborn determination."

And desperation.

"Stubborn determination is just as a good," he said and chuckled again. "Maybe that's what some of mine is. I got a little tired of myself, being sad and brooding. I mean, I'm still sad sometimes but life's too short to wall myself off entirely. I don't want to do that."

I heard I'll Be Watching You on the radio this morning. I feel appropriately stalker like now.

It's a fun song to sing along to, but it always leaves me feeling weird if I do so. STALKER SONG.

It is! I was just dancing along in my car because it's catchy but oooh, I felt like I needed some binoculars and a camera to do it stalkery justice!
