Fixer-Uppers [Wednesday]

William had planned to spend his free time during his shift at work doing a little bit of online research.

Unfortunately, that plan was rather neatly foiled by two things: his introduction to the phenomenon of popup ads, and a proliferation of fruitcake found tucked away on various shelves.

"Why on Earth would I even need a turkey costume?" he sighed, clicking the popup closed for what felt like the millionth time.

Fixer-Uppers was open. And not in need of turkey costumes. Or fruitcake.

"William?" Ender called as he stepped into the shop. He hadn't checked on him in a while; it felt like a good time to do so.

...That sounded familiar, not that Ender was letting on. Maybe the store was dealing with a virus problem?

"Ads?" he asked, instead. "They're notoriously hard to get rid of."
endsthegame: (is only mildly suspicious)

"The thing about internet ads is that they send them to millions of people at a time," Ender said, walking up to the counter, "Which means that if only a small percentage winds up clicking them, they still come back with a profit."
endsthegame: (what the hell are you on?)

"...Would?"

One more step, and Ender could glance over the counter.

"Thanksgiving, probably," Ender said, distractedly. His eyes were drawn to those fruitcakes. "It's one of those days in here again, is it?"
endsthegame: (hm.)

"I keep a roll of garbage bags in the back for just these kind of emergencies," Ender said, "It helps to be prepared."

He wasn't really a boy scout, but he saw the point of said preparation. Especially when you worked in a building that liked to spew any number of fruits and vegetables at any time.

"Just be cautious of the flamingoes," Ender said, "I hear they bite."

"Indeed," Ender said, then glanced away from the insanity at large. "So fruitcakes aside, how have you been?" he said. "We haven't spoken in a while."
endsthegame: (*snerk*)

"It sounds like you are," Ender said, with a wry little smile. "I think the customary question is 'which classes are you taking?' and likewise with the clubs."

"Art of Pacifism, Chemistry, and a class on how to get out of a tight spot," Ender said, wryly, "But I don't actually think the kind of classes we have are all that relevant. It's actually a thinly-veiled ruse for me to use to see how you're doing, catching up with this century."

Rilla didn't have classes on Wednesdays and so it seemed like an excellent day to pay a call on William in the shop full of things she didn't have names for.

Which was why she was pleased to recognize something: "Are those fruitcakes?"

[identity profile] rilla-myrilla.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's rather unusual even for here," Rilla declared. "Do you like fruitcake?"

[identity profile] rilla-myrilla.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Plus it's a bit late," Rilla replied thoughtfully. "Are these leftover holiday cakes? Because stale fruitcake is not pleasant."

"Oh ducks eat just about anything," Rilla replied, nodding. "And if not, I'm sure there must be some gulls down by the water."

[identity profile] rilla-myrilla.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Quite well," Rilla said with a smile. "Even if a few of my classes are quite peculiar. I'm being taught by a pirate."

"It would certainly be different from anything the other members of my family have tried," Rilla said, giggling. "But last week we were supposed to stand around and slap each other with fish!"
