Luke's Diner | Friday

After his misadventures in cooking waffles yesterday, Bod was happy to let the very skilled cooking staff do the cooking today. They would, at least, not be doing a lot of guesswork just to make the recipe right. While cooking seemed easy, Bod had realized that even the simplest of things was difficult. He was going to have to pay closer attention and apply himself further.

That was for later, though. For now, he'd busied himself wiping down counters and tables before opening up the diner. Once that was done, he pulled out the iPod he'd bought himself and managed to get some music going. The moody tones of the pieces made him immediately miss home.

Ino... had no excuse for visiting Bod today, nope.

But she figured that she didn't need an excuse either.

Which would be why, after StuCo, she wandered in and settled herself down on one of the counter seats, with a little wave.

"Hullo there, Ino," Bod said, stopping his music and pulling out his earbuds so he could talk to her properly. "How are things today?"

"Not too bad," she said, smiling a little. "Got to talk 'bout totally ridiculous things like flowers and hearts earlier."

It was ridiculous! It would also be fun!

"What 'bout you? Keepin' busy, I see."

"Keeping busy, most definitely. Things aren't too bad, I suppose. I tried to cook waffles yesterday and failed," he shared, chuckling. "Why were you talking about flowers and hearts?"

"Because that's what came up in the student council meeting," she said impishly. "Had to talk 'bout it, then."

A beat.

"What did you do to the waffles?"

"Well, we never got as far as making them," he said and shaking his head. "I've only made the prepackaged ones before and Jeremy was trying to make them from scratch and there was no recipe so we were just...guessing."

"Oooh," she said, with a nod that looked a bit sheepish. "I thought you'd managed to mess up prepackaged ones and I know you can cook that much."

Ino wrinkled her nose cheerfully. "Guessing generally goes bad in cooking, though."

"It does which is why we eventually gave up and came into town to get some waffles," he said and laughed. "We didn't want to completely destroy a common room when we were just guessing on how things went. I think we both need more practice."

"And maybe a cookbook?" she teased, leaning forward a little. "To guide your faltering steps into the culinary world."

"Well, Jeremy did get a recipe from the internet but yes, a cookbook," he agreed with a laugh. "Until then, I think I'll be sticking to takeaway and foods that I can heat up in the microwave. I don't know if I'm quite ready for cooking from scratch yet."

"Maybe try sticking with making pasta?" she suggested lightly. "It's easy to make--just water and noodles, then add a sauce, and you can buy the sauces in jars already prepared. Way way simpler than waffles. Or the vegetables that come in the little steamer packages. I like those."

Ariel was going to have a nice healthy balanced lunch of Pop Tarts today, but then she remembered that that would be silly, because wasn't Bod working at the diner today? So the menu was revised and she bounced on down to the town to visit him.

"Hullo, Ariel," Bod said, grinning when she arrived. He stopped his music and set that aside. "How are things today?"

"No complaints so far!" Ariel chirped easily as she slid onto a stool at the counter. "How about for you? Anything exciting in the world of working at the diner?"

"The diner? No but I did fail rather spectacularly in cooking waffles yesterday," he shared with a slight blush. "We managed to plug the waffle iron in and that was about it before we decided to go for waffles in town."

"Jeremy and I," he replied. "Have you met Jeremy yet? He lives on the fifth floor but he's new. He's a nice fellow even if we both nearly burned the common room down."

"Jeremy with the twin sister who doesn't look that much like him!" Ariel chirped with pride that, yes, she had met him. "I mean, that's not that rare. I don't look much like my sisters, either. And was it really that bad?" She had to ask, amongst more giggles.

"It was really that bad," he said and laughed. "We were guessing at ingredients, Ariel. Guessing. Can you imagine how that would have turned out?"

"Considering how my cookies turned out even when I was trying to follow the recipe exactly?" Ariel mused with a laugh. "Yeah, I think I can take a pretty good guess. Going out for waffles might have definitely been a good choice, there."

"It probably saved us from wasting ingredients others could use more resourcefully, if anything," Bod commented, nodding. "Other than that, I have...really not been doing a lot. I work, I read, I talk to a small handful of people and I try to get through the days."

"That's about all we can do," Ariel said with a small smile, which then brightened very quickly as she laughed. "Unless you're crazy like me and decide to join practically every club out there! You're going to have to read the newspaper when it comes out, Bod, I'm doing horoscopes! And keep your fingers crossed that I get on the cheerleading team and a good role in the musical!"
