Luke's Diner | Friday

There wasn't a lot going on today at the diner. Bod greeted everyone quietly, chatting for a few minutes with each staff member before he'd made his way out of the front and started wiping the counters down. He made sure to wipe around his ever present book and looked to be lost in his thoughts while he scrubbed. It was becoming all too common for him to get lost in his head lately. His thoughts were a lot more forgiving than reality.

Ariel rarely had trouble getting anyone's attention. And stopping by at the diner on Fridays was becoming as habitual as some of her other weekly stops.

"Hi, Bod!" She bounced up onto a stool. "How're the fries today?"

"Hullo, Ariel," he replied, pulling himself out of his reverie and smiling at her. "And they're smelling quite good so I can only imagine it'll translate well to taste. Would you like some?"

"Yes, please!" Ariel chirped easily as she wiggled a little to get comfortable on the stool. "Only, what would you recommend having it with this time? I can't do a burger every week..."

It was bad enough things were already starting to feel just a little tight, clothing wise, and she'd had to cut down on the Cheetos a bit, too.

"Hmm." Bod twirled the washcloth while he thought about it. "Would you like some sort of sandwich? There's the monte cristo or a Caesar club sandwich or pulled barbecue chicken as well as an assortment of others. Those are just the ones I recognized."

"Monte cristo?" asked Ariel, tilting her head and considering. "That sounds....exotic. I'll try that! Is it any good? Wait, don't tell me. I'll find out when I get it!"

"I don't think you'll regret it," Bod promised, scribbling down her order on a piece of paper and handing it to the cook. "It shouldn't take too long at all. How are you today, Ariel?"

"I'm good," Ariel said with a smile. "I've got to fuel up today because I've got to get my horoscopes in for the paper, like, today. I've been doing a lot of thinking about them, so I should just write them already, you know?"

"Horoscopes?" Bod repeated, vaguely familiar with the term. "You are doing almost everything, aren't you? How do you come up with horoscopes? It seems like it would take some science."

"A little bit," Ariel said with a shrug, "but I've been doing some research and I'm pretty sure most of it is just lucky guessing. I don't know how I came up with it. Actually, I didn't, Blackagar did. We were going over what I could do for the paper and that seemed to stick."

"Well, I hope my horoscopes proves positive," he laughed because he could really use some good things in his life. "Is writing another thing you're just trying out? I know you were doing investigating and singing as well. Just a little bit of everything for you, hmm?"

"Well," Ariel grinned. "Why not? Why should I have to pick just a few things when there are so many out there? There's a whole big world out there, and I don't want to wind up missing something, you know?"

Caroline had heard about Bod working at the diner and lo, she showed up to say hi and probably eat because it was a place with food and hello, that is what you did there.

"Is the dragon's breath chili made with real dragon's breath?" she asked, deciding it was a good way to get him to notice her.

"Yes," he said, managing to answer that with a straight face. "There's a dragon out back, you didn't see it when you came in? I don't know how you could have missed it."

"Oh good, because that imitation stuff totally sucks," she replied, smiling at his playing along with her. "I mean, don't people realize how important fresh ingredients are?"

"Well, dragons are in season especially around this island," he replied, leaning against the counter and grinning slightly. "I've heard it's best to pluck them out of their winter hibernation right before the season changes. We've named our dragon Roger."

He didn't know where that name had come from but it'd come from somewhere quickly enough that he didn't hesitate.

"And does Roger have really good breath?" Caroline asked, trying not to laugh as she leaned against the counter opposite from Bod. "Is it all minty fresh?"

"Unfortunately, I haven't smelled Roger's breath as of yet," he said and winced. "I would assume it's very...dragon like."

Whatever that meant.

"I know, that's asking you to trust me on something fairly important but I assure you, I'm certain that Roger the dragon has dragon breath. I don't think I'm wrong."

"You haven't smelled it, but it's in the chili? Oh Bod, are we sure the food here is edible?" Caroline leveled a concerned stare at him.

"I've been eating it for the past few weeks and I look fairly well, don't I?" he asked, standing up and doing a little circle just to illustrate that he wasn't affected.

"If you're concerned, I'll have the cook back there give me a small portion of this chili to eat so you can see that it won't have you curled up on the floor, holding your stomach," he offered. "I would do that for you."

"You always look well," Caroline pointed out, giggling at his spin. "But with that rec, I will totally try it. And then it's your fault if I die."

"And it'll be a burden I'll bear in the most dramatic of fashions," he promised, writing down her order and passing it back to the cook.

"And thank you for the compliment," he added once he'd wandered back to the counter. "I'm almost surprised you didn't add a 'but' in there. Most people do."

"You'd have to turn around for me to add in 'butt,'" Caroline replied. Hey, she lived with Nathan, something about the jokes was sticking to her.
