Caritas | Wednesday

For the second week in a row, Nathan ambled into Caritas on Wednesday night. And, for the second week in a row, the regular bartender was a no show. When Tino looked imploringly over at Nathan with wide eyes, who was Nathan to resist the call?

He had to duck a freaking flying naked baby thing to get back behind the bar which was annoying. He didn't need a freaking arrow in his ass to add to his already strange life. Arrow in the ass would just be hard to explain.

"Get these fucking things out of here," Nathan said authoritatively, thrusting a broom into Tino's hand and kicking his ass a kick to get him out and confronting the naked babies. Not even five later, Tino had an arrow in his arm and was making sex eyes at one of the zombies.

Ew.

Why Caroline had thought she'd find someone else working the bar was beyond her own comprehension. Of course the world was against her. Nothing was ever simple in her little self-obsessed world.

Not even the creepy naked babies fluttering through the air could stop her from obsessing over how she was supposed to act after avoiding the hell out of her roommate for the last two days. Fleeing the bar with supernatural speed: so not an option.

"Dude, I feel like I need an umbrella to keep these things from shooting me," she said, trying to act natural as she took a seat. "I cannot even imagine the shots I might need to get rid of whatever disease they are trying to spread across the island."

Considering that was the most she'd spoken to him since he'd taken off on Monday, Nathan thought he was a little deserved in his surprise. He didn't show it but he still felt it.

"I've got my man on it," Nathan said, pointing to his Tino and his trusty broom before his eyes flicked back to her. "You want me to have him come over and guard you? He'd be like the ugliest silent sentinel you've ever known."

Just because she'd avoided him like the plague didn't mean she wasn't capable of pretending there was nothing at all wrong.

"Um gross, I'll pass," Caroline said, having a look at the offered sentinel. "I think I can protect myself easier without that mouth breather staring down my shirt."

Nathan was pretty sure Tino got routinely rejected so as soon as Caroline passed, Tino went back to chasing the little naked baby things with his broom. He took orders well, that one.

"Probably a better option," Nathan agreed, willing to go along with this casual tone for right now. He figured that they, being the talented individuals they were, would change that at some point. "He's been shot about eight times and I swear, he's offered to sick the nipple of one of those zombies. I mean, I like a free show as much as the next person but even I had to forbid that."

"Um, are they at least saying no or do I need to like, get a pair of blinders to stop myself from accidentally seeing something so horrific?" Caroline asked, hands moving to her block her eyes from such a view while she waited for his answer.

"They're not answering him because I keep throwing bottles of liquor at his fat head," he said, cracking a smile at her obvious disgust with the possibility of seeing some zombie loving.

"Not the good booze, though," he assured her quickly. "I keep that behind the bar for me, myself and I. Tino's just getting the shitty cheap stuff that tastes like piss and water."

"So you're tossing bottles of Irish beer at them?" Caroline teased, putting her hands down the better to smirk back up at him. He made it far too easy.

"You're not looking to get served tonight, are you?" Nico asked, raising an eyebrow. Teasing the bartender was not the way to get him to pour her drinks! She should know that by now.

"You want to just sit on your stool there, looking pretty, while I drink in front of you?" Nathan wondered. "Cuz, I think that's what's gonna happen, Caroline."

Well that was one way to turn Caroline's smile upside down. "Don't make me turn on the pout, Nathan," she told him, already starting to whine. "I really, really, really need a drink!"

"Oh yeah?" he asked, stepping back to close his fingers around one of the Irish whiskeys so he could bring it back and settle it on the counter in between them. "And why do you really, really need a drink? Bad day?"

See, look how good he was being, not even mentioning all the shit between them.

"You missed a really," she told him, trying to think of a version to share that didn't include any sort of confusion. "And while my day was not what I would call 'bad,' I did attempt baking and it was a nightmare. Maybe my mother was right about me just not being capable of following directions."

"You're taking a cooking class?" Nathan asked, reaching for a glass and dumping some of the whiskey into said glass. Before she could think about stealing it, he was tossing half of it back.

"How did I miss that?" he wondered after he'd let that whiskey burn his throat and blood. "I mean, I'm fairly unobservant if things don't interest me but I think I would have noticed that."

"Um, no," she said, frowning at his continued denial of alcohol. "If I was taking a cooking class you would have been forced to consume the results by now. There's like, a bake sale or something for the sorority and I missed the meeting so I was trying to work on it on my own, which apparently is a recipe for failure. So, have I earned a glass yet?"

Nathan didn't immediately grab another glass for her because he was too busy trying to hide a laugh behind his glass. Half full with whiskey that it was, he might have had some moderate success if not for the noise.

"I forgot you were even partaking in the wonderful world of sororities," he finally said, still smirking. "Enjoying that girly bonding time? Have you guys had a pajama party yet? Can I come when you do?"

"Oh, of course! I'm sure the girls would be thrilled if I showed up with a boy to whatever girls-only pillow fight party you're imagining in that mind of yours," Caroline answered, rolling her eyes. "I just have to stop at Pixie Dust to pick up the matching sheer negligees and then we can go."

"Hey, I probably know half of those girls in that sorority anyway," he told her, finally reaching for another glass since she'd waited ever so patiently.

"I've made some close friends with a couple of them," he said, pouring some of the whiskey into her class. Of course, that meant he had to look at the glass and not her just to make sure he didn't spill anything. "I'm a very friendly guy, Caroline. They wouldn't mind me there."

"And by friendly you mean flirtatious," she said, leaving out the mention of how crass he could be. "So who all do you know?" Excuse her curious glance.

"Well, you," he said, sliding the glass towards her and shrugging. "Quinn. I talked to her today, in fact. Chatted about our respective dates and got a nice compliment about being easy on the eyes."

Of course, Quinn said everyone she'd gone on a date with was easy on the eyes but that wasn't a detail he was going to share. He shrugged.

"That's two right there," he continued, sipping his drink. "I think that qualifies me for a free trip to a pajama party. I'd bring the cookies."

"Don't forget your girl - Katie or something?" Caroline said, totally not pouting, really. Though, how dare he and Quinn end up with dates and she remained woefully without? "Did Quinn say who she was going with?"

"She's not my girl," Nathan told her with what he thought was practiced patience. He poured himself another glass and then leaned both elbows on the bar in front of him.

"And Quinn's going with someone called Hockey Puck or something," he replied, shrugging. "Not something I really paid attention to, you know. She's going so I'm sure I'll see her there if I feel like spreading my presence around that night."
