Luke's Diner | Friday

Bod was doing his level best to forget some of the events of the past weekend. He didn't necessarily want to forget Dorian because he was adorable but there were so many things associated with the boy that made him sad and he wondered if forgetting would be easier.

He wandered into work, still contemplating things but grateful for the distraction that work provided him. The cooking staff was already hard at work which meant Bod needed to catch up and get things ready.

"Hi, Bod!" Ariel bounced in around lunchtime, eager to make her now usual pitstop at the diner, and was in a typically chipper mood while doing so. "What's cookin', good lookin'?"

"How do you know I wasn't talking to them in the first place, huh?" Ariel asked with a laugh.

"Nah," Ariel waved a hand, grinning impishly. "It wasn't. But, seriously, what is cooking today? Anything really good?"

Ariel tilted her head thoughtfully at the specials board. "How do you think," she proposed, knowing it was probably crazy, "the pudding would taste if I dipped fries in it? Although the pot pie sounds good. Why were you looking dour?"

She frowned a little at that part. She didn't like the sound of it.

"Well," Ariel shrugged with a small smile, "I'm feeling adventurous. Let's give it a try. Maybe with a salad on the side or something."

Wait, was that actually something to suggest that Ariel might be trying to be mindful of what she was eating?

No, probably just freak coincidence.

Then her head tilted slightly with a look of concern. "Was it the kids?" she asked.

Ariel had mostly expected an answer like that, though she wished it would have been a different one. "How come she dislikes everything you do? You don't do many dislikable things, Bod. Unless you've got a secret double life or something."

And, just because she knew some humor had to be injected into the topic, she ducked down her head and fixed Bod with a Very Serious look. "Did you buy more hats, Bod?"

Part of Ariel wondered if she shouldn't ask these sorts of questions of Bod, but, at the same time, she was thinking a lot about relationships lately, what with the kids making her think about what she had with Bruce and what she might have with some guy named Eric, and there was also the great big question about embarking on a new one, too, so she just went ahead, playing around with a straw.

"Do you think you gave up?" she asked, peeking over as she did so.

Ariel's face went through an interesting chain of expressions there. First, sympathy with a little bit of sadness, followed by a little flash of guilt and worry, and finally her eyes stretching wide toward their limits at the revelation of that last little bit, which she'd have never in a million years would have guessed.

"Yeah," she said. "That sounds a bit more complex than just a matter of giving up."

Ariel gave Bod a faint, encouraging smile. "I'm sure she still loves you, too," she said, "but in her own way. People are so different from each other; that's what makes them so interesting. But, yeah, sometimes they're just too different to really work...like that. But how's that phrase here go? 'There's always more fish in the sea?'"

Despite herself, she laughed a little at that. It was such a funny little phrase, but she liked it. For obvious reasons.

"You'd better not!" Ariel said, still bothered by the idea that Kate wouldn't love him, because it just seemed so unfathomable to her. Especially if...

...oh, man, it wasn't any of her business, anyway, and focusing on the trip sounded like a much better idea, anyway. "If I catch you being upset on a trip like that, you'll be in so much trouble, mister, let me tell you."

"I'll knock on your door every day," Ariel vowed. "And if you're in there reading, I'll get someone to break in, drag you out, and throw you into the ocean!"

"Reading outside will be acceptable," Ariel decided with a judicious nod of her head.

"You mean, besides everything?" Ariel asked, looking far to eager for the prospect of dipping her fries in the rice pudding, even if the rice pudding wasn't as...pudding-y as she thought it would be.

"Lots of beach time," Ariel said easily with a nod, stabbing into the pudding with a fry. "And lots of swimming. I've missed all of that. The pool in the dorms is nice, but it's not even close to the same thing."
