The Arms Hotel Lobby, Friday [3/11]

It was unusual for Mary to be racing around the lobby in a jogging suit as she supervised preparations. That was the only piece of clothing available when she transformed back into her own body after spending a few days as a clumsy bird. At least she nearly back to normal for check-in time, though she randomly felt the urge to chirp.

She's still not feeling like herself yet but she's mostly there.

Amanda approached the desk with an apologetic smile. "Excuse me? I need to speak to someone to see if there are possibly any last-minute rooms available..."

"Last minute? That shouldn't be a problem," said Mary, smiling reassuringly. "There's still plenty of rooms available."

"Oh, good. I'm here for the parent-teacher conferences, and I wouldn't have liked to go off-island." Amanda smiled brightly. "I do apologize for the inconvenience, though. Amanda Grayson, of Vulcan."

"Mary Connell, hotel owner. It's really not a problem. We're not even close to being fully booked this weekend," she said. "Besides, this place is nicer than anything nearby on the mainland."

"Thank you so much. I don't need anything fancy, just a simple single?" Amanda handed over her Intergalactic Platinum card. "And vegetarian meals, if that's possible."

"We do offer some really good vegetarian options," said Mary, handing over the key to room 216 while waiting for the credit card to process. "I don't like eating red meat myself, so I always try to make sure that there are plenty of dishes available."

"I've gotten into the habit, my husband's entire family is vegetarian. As much as I sometimes crave a cheeseburger, I'm sure it would completely disagree with me by now," Amanda said, smiling.

"It's probably a lot healthier that way," said Mary. "I don't miss the cheeseburgers, but sometimes I miss steak. It was worse when I lived in Las Vegas and everyone was ordering surf and turf."

"Probably, and more ethical. More environmentally aware. And yet..." Amanda smiled and shrugged. "I still dream about them sometimes. But I know my son would look at me like I was a heathen if I ordered anything like that."

"It's always tough to give something up, but I guess it's a bit easier if you do it for your family," said Mary. She wasn't thinking of steak but of having to leave her sisters behind when she came to live in Fandom.

"Of course," Amanda said, nodding. "A planet. Or time with your parents..." She smiled lightly. "You just make a new life. Even if it isn't easy."

It's a big hotel, with plenty of room to chat in the lobby or bump into someone in the hallway.

I'm operating on very little sleep, so please poke me if something doesn't look right.
