Luke's Diner - Sunday

Why yes! Jack did work here. It was simply that Sundays were usually not very busy and went unnoticed. Yep. That was it.

With Mom not making an appearance and Bobby trying not to be too down about riding out Parents Weekend alone, Jack was in the mood for something to keep himself occupied. Those tables and booths were cleaner than they'd ever been thanks to furious concentration from Jack. The floor was next and that mop was going to mop like it had never mopped before.

Bobby sat on one of the stools, swinging his feet well-above the floor and out of the way of any mopping action. "I wonder if Marcus' dad is going to be mad you're working at another diner."

Jack raised an eyebrow. "Why would he be mad I'm getting paid work?"

"Cause it's kinda like cheating on his restaurant with this one," Bobby pondered. "Is there restaurant loyalty?"

"If I was working for his competitor maybe. Somehow I don't think anyone from Hart is going to make the commute to give their money to Luke's."

Bobby made a face. "Yeah, I got that part. Anyway Luke's doesn't have barbeque. Does it have pie?"

"Yeah, there's pie. It's not on the specials today, but there are some out back."

"Can I have some?" he asked, jumping off the stool and starting to head towards the back.

Boundaries were not his strong point today.

"Hey! Did Lacey suddenly employ you while I wasn't around?"

He made a face at the objection. "I'll help you mop if I can have some?" Bobby bargained.

"Or you can pay like every other customer." Jack knew that wasn't going to happen, so he offered Bobby the mop. "Employees only back there." If anyone was going to go and get the pie, it would be Jack.

"Yeah, but I'm not really a customer," Bobby couldn't keep himself from arguing even as he took the mop. "I'm visiting you." Mmm, mopping. So much fun slinging a mop around.

"Maybe I should ask the boss to get a sign saying paying customers only so we don't get freeloaders," Jack called over his shoulder.

"I'm paying! I'm paying with my labour," Bobby retorted. "It's a barter system, see? You get help and company, and I get pie. Good deal."

"You say that like it's a good thing." He returned with a piece of pie and set it on the counter. Then he was able to look at Bobby's work. "Some help."

He frowned at the area of wet floor. "What's wrong with it? I mopped!"

"You splashed water on the floor and swirled it around. The idea is to clean the floor."

"Swirling water on the floor is how you clean it, I thought," Bobby complained.

"Eat your pie." He wanted the mop back.

He shrugged and gave the mop back to Jack before jumping up on the stool again. "Thanks, Jack. This is good pie. So why are you working here again?"

Jack shrugged. "I could use the extra money."

"For what?" Bobby asked. See again re: boundaries.

"College," Jack admitted.

Bobby considered as he took a bite of his pie. "Where do you wanna go to college?"

"I don't know," Jack said. "But I want options."

"If you went to school in Hart, they waive tuition," Bobby pointed out. And then Jack would still be around and he wouldn't have to miss him, and Jack was so never going to go to college where Mom taught.

"It's a back-up plan." No it wasn't. "But there's more to college than tuition and I don't have the option of a scholarship."

"There's a lot of scholarships that aren't sports," Bobby pointed out. "Do you want me to do some research for you? I could find essay scholarships and grades and I bet there's a ton of stuff you'd qualify for!"

"Will it get you to leave me alone for a while?"

Bobby looked dejected but shoveled the rest of his pie into his mouth. "Oh. Okay. Yeah, I can do that."

It was a nice gesture, even if he wasn't going to openly admit it. "Then yeah. Research it."

"I'll print everything off and bring it to you, okay?" Bobby said, pushing his plate to the other side of the counter and slipping off the stool.

Jack nodded. "I didn't mean you had to leave me alone now."

Bobby's eyes lit up. "You want me to stay and keep you company? I could wash the tables!"

"And make it so I have to do them again? No thanks. I'll get another piece of pie." He would put money in the till for it.

"I could do 'em right!" he argued. "If you tell me how you want me to do it."

It's amazing how easy it is to remember to do something when it's written on your calendar.
