Dite's Decadent Delights, Monday Afternoon

Overall, Karla's Parents' Weekend had been a good one, even if Julian had decided to inflict his personality on everyone by visiting, too. But the overall pleasantness hadn't really been enough to counteract some of the less than pleasant aspects of the weekend.

Meeting Warren's father hadn't quite been what she was expecting, and the way they'd parted had been something of a surprise for both of them. Then getting the news about Glacia had come as another shock. Morton had sat her down and explained Hobart's plans after everyone had left for the afternoon. He and Julian stressed that right now it was all very tentative and might never come to pass, but...

Hobart was planning to outlaw an entire caste. How was that even possible?

It was a pensive and broody Karla that was pretending to dust 'Dite's today.

Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, had no idea what time it was when she finally arrived back on Fandom Island. She wasn't even sure what day it was. For her, it had been a month of putting out fires, trying to stop Ares, and watching as her world went just a little crazy.

When she *zapped* herself into her store office, she tried to be quiet, she really did. The last thing she needed was Karla lecturing her about keeping in touch. Exhausted, she curled up on the small sofa and pulled a blanket over herself, wincing as the cushions under her gave a loud squeak.

"Shh. Traitor." She pulled the cover over her head and sighed.

Raven knocked on the office door, taking the chance that 'Dite was there. Her gifts were sometimes "wonky" when it came to sensing deities, but it did feel like someone was back there.

"Lady Aphrodite?" she called softly.

Of course. It had to be Raven. Or, the second coming of Xena, as 'Dite had begun to think of her in her mind.

That, of course, meant Karla was the second coming of Gabrielle, and since she was rooming with the original, the whole thing made 'Dite's head hurt.

Lowering the blankets with a sigh, she called out for Raven to enter. Time to face the proverbial . . . whatever. She'd never been good with proverbs anyway.

Raven slipped inside the office and shut the door behind her. "If now is not a good time, I can come back later," she said hesitantly, not sure what to make of what she was sensing.

Sitting up, 'Dite shook her head. "No, Raven, come on in." She waved her young friend over for a hug. "I haven't seen you since . . . well . . . before."

She wasn't going to specify before what.

"I'm so glad you're back, though. How are you? I've been gone for so long, it feels like forever."

It was a very tight hug that Raven gave 'Dite once she crossed the room. "I am sorry to have caused you any distress," she said, voice muffled. "But I am much better now."

Other than the setback about finding out about her brothers, but that was small compared to, oh, being alive and not evil now.

It wasn't the cushions that gave 'Dite away; Karla was far too lost in her own thoughts for that, but the goddess' own psychic scent, permeating the air like gold dust and rose petals.

It still took Karla awhile to notice, but when she did, she dashed towards Dite's office. "'Dite?" she called, knocking on the door and then sticking her head through anyway. "Is that you? Are you here?"

"No." The voice was calling from under the blanket. "I'm not here. I'm a figment of your imagination."

Either that, or the blanket had come to life, but 'Dite didn't think Karla would buy that one.

Well, then Karla was flying across the room to hug a figment of her imagination. "Oh, 'Dite, I'm so glad you're back!" she said, clinging to the living blanket. "I missed you so!"

On second thought, maybe she should have just said the blanket had come alive. "Easy, easy! Okay, I'm up!" Sitting up, 'Dite gave a hug back. "I missed you, too. It's nice to be home."

For a long moment she just enjoyed the hug, clinging to Karla with a sigh.

Karla wasn't in any rush to end it, especially since she didn't really have a lecture planned for 'Dite. After her run-in with Warren, Jr. yesterday, she was kind of all yelled out.

"I'm glad you're back," she said with a sigh. "The store's seemed so empty without you. And not just the store, either."

Raven hadn't been back to the shop since she'd died and come back since she wanted to talk to 'Dite first before resuming her old job, but she couldn't ignore Karla's brooding (as if she wouldn't sense that).

Besides, she might have some shopping to do, too.

"Karla, what is wrong?" she asked upon entering the store.

"Huh?" Karla glanced up, rocketed back to earth when her mind had been a billion miles away. Or...however far Glacia was from Fandom.

"Mother Night, Raven! You startled me!" she accused. Because Raven had clearly been sneaking, or something.

"I am sorry!" Raven said quickly, sending a soothing pulse of comfort Karla's way. "I felt your distress and had to come see what was wrong, and what I could to to help."

She hadn't been headed in that general direction anyway, shhh.

"Noth--" Karla's automatic denial caught in her throat. She didn't want to catch everyone else up in her messes at home, true, but this was Raven. A member of her future Court. Who'd gotten in trouble for keeping things to herself.

"Morton and Julian shared some disturbing news with me before they left," she said quietly. "Hobart's planning to outlaw Black Widows."

"What?" Raven said, eyes widening. "Can he do that? That cannot be permitted." That smacked of the awful people of Jono and Bobby's worlds who tried to persecute mutants simply for being born with their powers.

"Will we be traveling to Glacia to make certain this does not happen?" Yes, we, Karla. There would be no going alone.

Yes! Of course they were! They were going to storm Glacia and refuse to allow such a thing to happen! They would rally the people together and remind them that Black Widows were once a respected and honored caste and that to allow Hobart to go through with this was a travesty and a corruption of what it means to be Blood!

At least, that's what Karla wanted to say.

Karla came back to herself with a start. "I didn't say anything was wrong," she said, trying not to look guilty.

"I got bad news from home," Karla said, trying not to sound bitter. "So, you know, it's another day that ends in -y. But there's nothing I can do right now, so best not to think of it."

Ender's words ringing in her ears about getting her friends involved with things, she straightened her shoulders and gave him a determined smile. "How was your weekend?"

"Fairly quiet, all things considered," Ben replied. "I didn't see Val, but I spent a lot of time with Dink."

He gave her a little look. "It's not a crush."
