Luke's Diner | Friday

Bod had decided earlier in the week to spend some of this weekend off island. It had been too long since he'd gotten off for a bit of fresh air and he figured he could spend some sitting in bookstores, drinking hot chocolate and purchasing some new books to add to his collection. But, that was for tomorrow and today, he was wiping down the front counters of the diner while listening to the quiet chatter of the cooking staff in the kitchen. He felt almost content. Almost.

Bod's around if you'd like for him to help you out!

"Hey, Bod," Ender greeted as he came in. "Sorry I'm a few weeks late, but things have been pretty busy."

"Hullo there, Ender," Bod said, tossing his washcloth over his shoulder and smiling. "And don't worry about it at all. You haven't been the only one that's been busy. Amazing how that happens when you least expect it. Are things well?"

"Things are fine," Ender said, flashing him a brief smile. "I was going to bring my roommate, actually, but I've already dropped off lunch ~~or will when the post goes up~~ and didn't think to come here until just now. How about you?"

"I have nothing to complain about even if Ben has missed out on my shift," Bod joked, leaning against the counter. "Since Parent's Weekend, things have been quiet and I've been keeping a fairly low profile. I've been reading a lot."

"Anything interesting?" Ender asked, peering over his end of the counter.

"I think so," Bod answered, nodding. "I read something the other day about the natural history of languages which I enjoyed, a book on graveyards in Texas which was interesting but limited in the scope of the subject, and a few books on the evolution of slang."

So, it was a diverse mix and none of it in the fiction department but Bod still enjoyed them. "I'm actually planning a trip to the bookstore to pick up some new things this weekend."

"Any particular reason why you're so interested in linguistics?" Ender wanted to know. He thought briefly back to his trip back to Eros, and learning Spanish off a silly vid with Ben.

"When I'm finished here, I plan on traveling and I'd like to know a little more about the origin and history of different languages," Bod explained. "I'm well versed in Latin but Latin and English aren't the only languages in the world and I'd just like to understand as many as I can as thoroughly as I can even if I can't speak them fluently."

Ender made an interested noise. "Do you find it's changing the way you look at things?" he wondered. "Every language does put things in a different perspective than all the others."

"Indeed," Bod answered, nodding. "It took me awhile, prior to arriving here, to not think of things by the Latin roots they came from. And thinking of things in terms of Latin made everything seem a little more...complex to me. It's hard to explain."

Bod shook his head and shrugged. "Reading about slang, though, that seems to simplify things a bit. It's not really an official language, of course, but when people substitute or create entirely new words from preexisting words or terms, it seems like it's being made unnecessarily easy and yet, I've still caught myself using slang."

"It's kind of hard to avoid that way," Ender agreed, with a brief smile, and stole a menu. "Though at the end of the day, most of it comes down to the same thing. Just with different words."

"True. Different words that seem to multiply each day," he laughed, shaking his head. "I barely think I've scratched the surface of the slang of this country. For an unofficial language, it's pretty widespread."

"Just figure out the basics and take it from there," Ender advised, looking amused. "Trust me, the slang that matters you'll figure out quick enough because everyone around you is using it."

"I'm doing my best," he said and smiled. "Can I get you anything to eat or drink? I'm not doing any of the cooking today so you won't even be given something experimental."

"I had lunch earlier, but I can go with a salad and a glass of water," Ender said, putting the menu back down. "The one with goat cheese, maybe?"

A beat. "The salad. Not the water."

"Clarification is always good," Bod agreed, snickering and writing down the order to hand to one of the cook staff. The water he prepared himself before sliding the glass across towards Ender.

"Do you have a general interest in linguistics as well?" he asked after a moment.

"I didn't really want to wind up with goat cheese in my water," Ender admitted, "Though who knows, it might taste good."

He picked up his glass of water and took a swig. "I have a general interest in most things to do with people," he said, "Especially since I'm planning to travel a lot, too."

"I get the feeling that your form of traveling is a bit different than mine," Bod remarked. "But, I could be wrong since traveling around this world has something to do with people, doesn't it?"

"Traveling through the universe, in my case," Ender said, quasi-apologetically. "But that attracts a great deal of people from all kinds of nationalities, too. Where are you planning to go?"

"I think I'm going to back to England to start," Bod answered, sounding thoughtful. "From there, I've been entertaining the idea of doing a walkabout around the United Kingdom. It's something I've done before after leaving the graveyard but I know there's more to see and I want to see it all."

"Not a lot of linguistics needed there, so far," Ender remarked, amused.

"I know," Bod said, laughing, "but I've some things there that I'd like to get some closure for before I think of setting out for a permanent sort of vacation. I've left some things sitting for too long. It'll be a bit of a goodbye too since once I leave, I plan on seeing everything else I can before returning."

"Closure is rarely a bad thing," Ender remarked, "But also actually rare. I'm hoping you'll have some luck with that."

"It should be simple if I can make myself do it," Bod said vaguely, shrugging a shoulder. "There's guilt and sadness involved and who really wants to expose themselves to that intentionally?"

Ender knew guilt, and Ender could have offered him a good answer: someone who felt they deserved it. Someone like that wouldn't mind exposing themselves to it at all, again and again.

"Someone who knows you have to lance a boil if it's going to get better at all," he said instead.

Bod took a moment to think about that while he reached for Ender's finished salad and slid it across the counter to him. "The pain can't get better until you treat it?"

Ender picked up the salad. "If you don't, it festers," he said, "Or that's the theory, anyway. I don't know; I've never lanced any boils, myself."

He inflected that one like it was a joke.

"It just sounds painful but I've never lanced a boil either" he said, frowning briefly. "I don't think I want to either. Perhaps, I'll just confront the guilt. I've heard the term 'like ripping off a scab' so maybe that'll be what it feels like."

"I'm using the boil metaphor because of its contents," Ender said, taking another sip of his water. "Festering matter, and all that. I'm not actually thinking you'll get lanced."

Uh. Innuendo not intended?

"I'm grabbing a seat, if you don't mind," he added.

"I'd rather avoid getting lanced," he agreed with a laugh. "And no, I don't mind at all. Please do. Let me know if you need anything else as well."

"I'll get back to you on the quality of the salad," Ender promised, with a smile. He used it to point at the seat he was going to take. "Feel free to swing by," he said, fake-solemnly, and then padded towards it.
