The Park, Sunday Afternoon

The end of their first training session found Steve and Tony in the park. Steve wasn't even breathing hard, and looked like he'd really enjoyed himself.

The same could probably not be said for his teaching assistant, which was kind of like a sidekick, except not at all if you asked Steve. Who was still wondering how he'd gotten himself talked into this. "Right, so," he said, "that was a good warm-up..."

"Warm up?" Tony asked from his spot on the ground. Yes, it was dirty and he was pretty sure that he was on a rock, but it wasn't like he could move out of the way. "I think I threw up a lung."

Steve ran twenty miles every morning as the start of his workout, but he was well aware he was a special case and wasn't going to make Tony cry by telling him that. "They just do. And then you get better at it and you can do more." Yes, Tony. More.

"No, you can't," Steve told him, kindly pretending he hadn't heard the whimper. "You built a suit that can fly. And that won't help you at all if the suit doesn't work, or you can't get to it." How did Howard expect this kid to deal with kidnapping attempts? The Ransom of Red Chief?

Well, if it worked, you could hardly fault the kid.

"If it's to that point, I think running won't be an option." A beat. "Though a remote access to the systems wouldn't be uncalled for," he muttered.

Steve facepalmed. "You're missing the point. Stop thinking about the armor and start thinking about when you don't have access to the armor. Like now. I attack you--well, if I attack you right now pretty much you're going to die," Steve admitted, since he wasn't sure Tony could get up. "But hypothetically. What do you do?"

No, seriously, he would pretty much just die, but, "Go for the eyes. Eyes, throat, solar plexus, feet. Or the crotch. Most guys expect that shot from a girl more than from another guy. But the point is, you're going to build up strength so you'll be able to fight." A beat. "Or run away." Based on his current level of skill, Steve was recommending running away.

"When you've done it enough times to build up endurance," Steve told him, holding out a hand in case Tony wanted assistance in getting to his feet. Or if he wanted to sit there for a while, that was fine, too. "I was going to make you do push-ups now, but I think we'll save that for next week..."

"Running and those--" Tony rubbed the back of his neck. "Sit up things?"

He liked to think his engineering skills kept his upper body fit, but... no. There would be no epic, sexy forging scenes for him.
