Dite's Decadent Delights, Monday Afternoon

Karla was unexpectedly a mother again, thanks to class this morning. But there was only one, and Dolf seemed both competent and...almost excited about being a father? So it wasn't as bad as the last time this had happened to her.

Which was a very good thing, considering the plan she'd concocted for the week. It wasn't a new plan, but being a kitty unexpectedly for a week had put a crimp in her timing.

So Karla was making notes and forming plans in a notebook today and very few of them were about unexpected android babies.

She's not a kitty!

Even after his class with Jaina, Ben's pensive mood caused by lunch with Ender hadn't been broken. "Hey, Karla," he said. "It's nice to see you un-kittied."

"How many times did I try to pounce on you?" Karla asked with an amused sigh. "I'd say 'hi,' but I figured I should get that out of the way first."

"A few," Ben said, laughing. "You got very irritated with Jedi reflexes--seemed to consider it cheating."

"It is!" Karla protested. "You have no idea how much you set back my poor kittenly self-esteem."

Okay, she didn't either, but she thought there might be a way to get ice cream out of the deal.

"There was nothing wrong with your self-esteem," Ben said with a snort. "If you could have shunted it into shielding, you'd be invincible."

"I have no idea what you could possibly mean," Karla said with a toss of her hair. "I'm certain I was as sweet a kitty as I am a female."

Well, that was true on a technicality, at least.

"There is no way I can answer that without getting hit," Ben decided. "What are you working on?"

"You know?" Karla asked with mock-surprise, "you just might be learning!"

She was smiling up at him as she said it, but her psychic scent tilted a little towards uncertain as she answered his questions.

"Plans?" she said. "I'm thinking of taking a trip back home. Glacia."

And the explosion in three...two...one...

"GLACIA?!"

Was that about right, Karla?

It was like she was prescient!

Wincing already, Karla held up her hands to forestall much more. "No, no, no! It's going to be all right! I have a plan!"

"Because those work out exactly according to how they're written."

Said the Skywalker.

Touche.

"But this one will!" Karla argued, as if she hadn't had plenty of life experiences that pointed otherwise. "I'm not going to Sidra! Or any big city at all. And no one will know where I'm going until I'm there! I'm...uh, what was that word? Monkey-Queening? Rhesus-Queening?" Puzzled, she looked down, trying to remember.

"I know!" Triumph! "Gorilla-Queening! That's what I'm going to be doing!"

Ben blinked. "...you're taking a monkey? I don't suppose that's just a really rude way of talking about Julian."

"No, no," Karla said, waving that away impatiently. "You know, like gorilla-fighting! The kind they do in jungles and stuff, with sneaking and running and hiding. Like gorillas do. Except Glacia doesn't have jungles. So I'll be doing it in fields!"

It made sense to her.

Ben stared at her blankly before realizing what she meant. "Like the rebellion," he said, nodding slowly. "Hit and fade tactics. When are we going?"

"Well, there's a dance Friday and I don't have any classes on Tuesdays..." Karla said, then stopped. "We?"

Ben gave her a look. "Unless you're calling Morton in on this."

"I can't!" Karla protested. "He's stuck in Sidra, right under Hobart's nose. If he goes anywhere, does anything, Hobart could find out. He knows what I'm planning--" and was about as thrilled as Ben was with it "--and agrees that if he's anywhere near it, it could ruin everything."

"Then I'm going with you," Ben said with a stubborn set to his jaw, "just in case something doesn't go according to plan."

"I--You--But--" Karla looked at Ben and sighed. She could either agree, or beat her head into the wall several times and then agree. "Fine then. You're coming with me. And when everything works out wonderfully, you can buy me ice cream for doubting my plans."

"I'll be happy to," Ben replied, smiling, "and if not, you buy me the ice cream."

"I was going to suggest you buy me ice cream as consolation for it not working out the way I'd hoped, but we can do it that way, too," Karla said, dimpling. "If you want to be selfish."

"No, selfish is you getting ice cream bought for you either way this pans out," Ben said teasingly.

"Nonsense," Karla retorted. "That's just good politics."

"You keep telling yourself that," Ben said with a smirk.

"I do!" Karla said with a laugh. "Works out wonderfully for me."

Leaving for an early dinner with the niecelings and nephews. Will pick up pings once I get back.
