Kappa Delta Gremlin Meeting / The Trooper Station / Tuesday Afternoon

The girls met today where Emma and Quinn had handwavily told them to arrive - at the Trooper Station.

Vimes cleared his throat, strongly wishing that Sergeant Angua was here at the moment. At least she had a few things in common with the assembled lot in his station. Hair care tips at the very least. She had enough of it...

“Welcome to the Trooper Station,” he said, hands clasped behind his back in a stance that could be considered ‘at ease’. This was almost as bad as an audience with the patrician. “You’ll be working with a few of the troopers today to get a feeling for what the coppering life is like.”

"Which we're doing by practicing fingerprinting and helping out around the station," Quinn put in smoothly, before anyone could express any bright ideas about going to the Perk and arresting the barista who always tried to look down your top. (Okay, that might have been what Quinn wanted to do, and she was still a little sulky she couldn't.) "We'll be gaining valuable real-world office experience."

"Misfiled paperwork could lead to the wrong suspect being booked or going free," Emma continued. "Make the coffee too weak, and your fellows might put you behind bars. You have to know someones rights, and not violate them." SIGH. BORING. "It's not as glamorous as on television shows, and it's a lot of walking."

But the walked was the best part, girls! “And learning to sleep standing up and in the rain,” Vimes added cheerfully.

"Or just not sleep at all," Emma replied, wincing at the idea of what that would do to her hair and skin. "Some of us are good at that sort of thing. The rest of us? Can label evidence under the watchful eye of the Troopers and Sheriff Vimes."

Quinn started by trying to sort things out, but she ended up just reading a file.

Tiny reindeer. Seriously. This place was bizarre.

Ariel was naturally drawn to an activity that involved something shiny, and she was definitely impressed with the coffee machine at the station! These guys must drink buckets of this stuff!

So she was poking at it curiously, half trying to figure out how it worked and half wondering if there were any parts of it that could be spirited away for her collection without being noticed.

...You know you had a problem when you were thinking of swiping things from a police station, really.

He was indeed around. And keeping a close eye on the people near the coffee maker.

If that machine was broken, he would have a revolt on his hands.

"Oh, Sheriff Vimes," Jane slightly bounced up to the man with a pleasant little smile on her face. "I have to extend my gratitude to you for letting the girls come in for a bit of a look at the exciting occupation of policing! It was ever so kind of you, and it looks like they're really taking to it, wouldn't you say?"

[identity profile] solesofmyfeet.livejournal.com 2011-03-29 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Miss Porter," he replied with a nod. Because it was polite and she hadn't done anything to annoy him. "As long as they keep from breaking the coffee maker, I can safely say this hasn't been the worst experience this station has had with a group under the age of eighteen roaming about."

Jane did send a slightly worried glance in the direction of the coffee maker considering which of the girls had chosen to take on that particular task, but she wasn't about to vocalize her concerns that it might not be in the best of hands right now. She would much rather, of course, entice the sheriff into discussing some of the more exciting aspects of his job.

"Is that so?" she asked. "I'm sure you've constantly got your hands full dealing with the mischievous trouble our students at the school are likely to get themselves into! But you seem to have quite an able troop at your disposal, and what curious armour! Is it traditional?"

Ralph could always arrest them for trying to cause a riot if they did anything.

Vimes had to blink at that before sorting through all those enthusiastic statements. All of that cheer was unnerving. It was like talking to Carrot. "According to Ralph, it is. I prefer a good breastplate myself."

Re: Talk to Sheriff Vimes!

[identity profile] bootlessjane.livejournal.com 2011-03-29 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, you can hardly go wrong with a good breastplate," Jane agreed. "Not, of course, that I'd know personally; might be a bit awkward of a fit, but for one of your stature, why, I can't think of anything that would be better. I trust it takes a good deal of care, though, otherwise you'd run into trouble there."

Again, he was forced to sort out that line of thought, nodding vaguely as he did. "Sergeant Angua had one made for her," he replied as if to catch up to her in the conversation. "Not much call for it on whole here, though."

Re: Talk to Sheriff Vimes!

[identity profile] bootlessjane.livejournal.com 2011-03-29 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
And just think, Vimes, this was actually light conversation for Jane.

"Ah, yes, of course," she said with a thoughtful nod. "Whatever did happen to the sergeant, anyway? It's a shame I never got to meet her; someone like her on the police force! It would have been great for her to be here for the girls' visit; she could have been an excellent example for them."

And it would have allowed him to flee go to this office to hide get some work done.

"She went back home. Not terribly good at staying in one place, I gather."

Or couldn't resist the charisma of Carrot any longer.

"More's the pity then," said Jane with a bit of a wistful sigh; it would be quite an experience to get to pick the brain of a policewoman. The idea was still so delightfully fascinating to her, and, really, that armour had been quite fetching on the woman and devilishly risque. "Though I feel I can understand the feeling. Nothing like a good expedition or adventure when you start feeling a bit restless with society, eh, Sheriff?"

"I prefer to walk." And pine for Ankh-Morpork. But that wasn't the point. "A patrol around the island tends to take care of things."

"I have found the preserve to be more exciting than I had expected for this area of the world," Jane admitted with a little bit of a wistful sigh, as if she'd much rather be there now. "The migratory paths of the teal deer are terribly interesting; I've been looking for some sort of suggestion as to their breeding patterns as well, to get an idea of exactly how they came to be such a unique colour, but I've yet to find much. Too busy with the class and the sorority, I suppose, but, really, it's rather fascinating. There seems to be almost no evolutionary purpose in the development of their odd coats, though they have no natural predators on the island, so something of a camouflage coat would be entirely unnecessary. Although, really," said Jane, taking a breath, "if we're looking at odd evolutionary developments, the focus should be on how those adorable little radio squirrels have figured out how to use a pencil so well! It's impressive to see that even in apes, let alone little tiny woodland creatures."

"...Yes?" he ventured. Because dear gods. "Is that, one of the deer at the window?"

Jane looked.

"Oh, it is!" she cried with delight, and then laughed a little. "Wouldn't you know, it's the darndest thing, they always seem to show up whenever I talk about them. It's as if they know! Clever little ruminant mammals!"

"I'm sure it's just a coincidence," he assured her. Even though he didn't really believe that was the case. "I wouldn't want to keep you from your important work..."

"Oh, you're hardly doing that!" Jane assured him. "At this very moment, my work is being here for the gir--Oh, Ariel! Dear! I don't think that part is supposed to come off!"

Re: Talk to Sheriff Vimes!

[identity profile] solesofmyfeet.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Ralph!" No need for that, the trooper was already taking the coffee maker away from her.

Re: Talk to Sheriff Vimes!

[identity profile] bootlessjane.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Jane winced, but then she had to bite down on her lip to keep from laughing a little at the scolding that the girl was getting, in the form of just a shaking finger and then a shaking fist. The message seemed to be getting across to her pretty well, though Jane's efforts weren't going to well. A bit of a laugh got out and then she coughed to cover it up.

"They're just so inquisitive!"

"They're children," Vimes informed her. "That just makes them more destructive."

"Curiosity is often a good sign of a clever mind," said Jane.

Who then paused a moment before adding, "Of course, it's also a good way to weed out the not so clever ones, too..."

"If jail would actually teach them a lesson..." Vimes grumbled.

Jane had to bite down on her lip a little again. "Why, Sheriff Vimes," she said, "you're not suggesting that there might be some ineffectualness in the police system, are you?"

"You might want to let your man know to get his thumping hand ready, then," Jane offered. "I think I just saw Miss Ariel slip a finger printing pad into her pocket."

"Ralph," Vimes growled again, rubbing his forehead. "Please escort our guest out of the bullpen."

Quinn wasn't doing any fingerprinting. She didn't want ink on her skirt.

Re: Talk to Miss Porter

Jane herself was terribly intrigued with all of this, and she thought it was a wonderful activity for the girls to participate in. Of course, she was trying not to appear too excited to pick up a few things herself, as she wanted to ensure to look the part of a worldly, knowledgeable adviser, what with the swarthy, rough-and-tumble, and positively intriguing figure of the sheriff nearby.
