Magic + Support Reserves, Wednesday, 4/6

The Magic & Support Reserves gathered in a clearing in the preserve today, seated around an empty fire pit. A brook cursed merrily along within earshot, and a few birds argued in the trees overhead. There was a sad lack of prepared snacks, but at least the trees were pretty, in an early spring kind of way.

"Hi," Tara said, hands tucked into the pocket of her hooded windbreaker. "Welcome to nature. Today, we're talking about what you need to do if you end up caught outside in an emergency. We're in the preserve, 'cause it's handy like that, so most of what we're talking about will be forest survival. But you could use similar principles on a beach, in a desert, in the snow...."

She gestured, indicating she could go on. "Anyhow, your first priorities should be water, fire, and shelter from the elements. You can go a day or two without eating, but you can't manage that long without a dry place to sleep and water to drink."

"For one thing, fire will usually keep away animals because they fear it," Karla explained, "as well as potentially drawing the notice of people looking for you if you're lost. Even with powers, it's best to know how to create a good fire, so that you're not constantly having to relight it or depend on your powers to keep it going. Make sure you give some thought to your fire prep, because you don't want it to get out of control or go out in the night. Being safe is always important. Stock up on kindling, too, keep in mind the most
appropriate fire
for your purpose."

"Building a fire is also essential for purifying any water you might find," Raven added. "If you do not do so, you may become ill, which will further hamper your attempts to survive. Rainwater that you collect should be fine, but any water from a lake of stream should be boiled -- ten minutes should be sufficient to purify the water. But do not drink salt water, for that will make dehydration worse."

"A lot worse," Dolf said, with a frown and the voice of experience. "There are many ways you can get sick from bad water. Even if you're horribly thirsty." He paused. "Try to find somewhere near water. Usually animals will come there too, and otherwise you will still have the fish. Just don't go in it if it looks like the currents are strong." He could... talk about this for a long while. "Stay close to friends if you have them, for warmth."

"And because if you lose track of your friends, anyone looking for you would have a harder time," Tara pointed out quickly. "Don't go off on your own unless you absolutely have to. The woods are scary enough at night without being alone."

"For an activity today," she added, "We're going to build campfires and then try some campfire cooking."

What, you didn't really think the Reserves would meet in the woods with no snacks, did you?

[OOC: Preplayed with the usual suspects.]

Scully was there, not loving nature, but glad for the snacks at least.

Kennedy and roughing it were still not BFF, but for the sake of being all mutual-Reserves-supporty not to mention friends-supporty she'd gamely made the trek out to the preserve.

The lack of ready-to-eat food was making her hardcore sad, though. Or, at the very least, a little hungry.

Alex wasn't much of a nature person -- she lived in a city, after all -- but she was going to stick around anyway. Plus, there were snacks. That made things better.

Cally had done some surviving in nature by accident once - she was all for learning how to repeat that on purpose. Not that she was looking forward to more shuttle breakdowns on jungle field trips, but...

Stephanie was pretty handy about starting fires even without the assistance of her utility belt's gear; it'd been one of those skills she'd thought it would be a good idea to learn.

She had a nice fire going in decent time, and settled down to roast herself a couple of hot dogs, humming cheerfully.

. . . oooh, s'mores. Those should be next on the agenda.

Raven was there, and in a fairly decent mood and not moping/worried about something for a change. Mark your calenders.

Dolf was there, and enjoying some old memories of sleeping out in the rough with the kids.
